All right brother pressure is on. We are waiting ;D ;D ;D
Now time to hunt down one of JRK's lost builds...

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

I know it's been a while, but I'm still working!!! I promise!

I had a fender bender hit and run not too long ago, and my old truck got an unwanted nose job from it. I've been trying to haul parts in the spare Honda Civic hatch, and well, the motorcycle frame doesn't very well like to fit in said car, so as the parts came in for the truck, I had to get her back together! And now that she's up and running, I got a full day in yesterday.

I finally broke down and did it. I chopped the rear end of the frame. I wanted the bike to be completely open in the rear where the monoshock suspension was going to be hanging out to give a good view of its workings and what not. So I cut the rear stays and the seat tube accordingly. In the pictures, I haven't yet fabbed up the rest of the seat frame or the new stays that I plan on creating for the seat. The new ones will be much more streamlined and sexy when they are done. I have just about decided that a custom seat pan is the only way I'll ever get what I want, so fiberglass, here we come again. ::)

The rear suspension is done except for the grade 8 hardware that I need for mounting the shock. That will come today. I cut out a portion of the stock tank mount plate and welded in a new piece of 3/8 plate between the frame rails. I wanted beefy, and beefy is what I got. It's triple welded on all four sides for strength. On the swingarm, to get the correct geometry I built a shock stay out of another piece of tube with a support to hold the bottom shock bracket. This of course was all fully welded and gussetted accordingly.

And then finally, I fabbed up the new rear forks out of the 3/8 plate and welded them to the rear of the swingarm.

This all took a while because I am having to vut all of my parts by hand, and I want them to look right, so I took my time with the grinder and what not. But all in all I think it turned out well.

I also finished cleaning the head of all of the carbon build up, and I re-polished the valves. They're ready for install as soon as I get a coat of POR-15 and engine paint on it.

I'll be back in the shop again today, so hopefully more updates this evening. Let me know what you think!

Overall finished product. Today I hope to finish the seat frame and supports and finish the tank mounts. I can't put the wheels back on yet as I am waiting for my bronze bushings to come in. It's got temporary wooden bushings in the swingarm right now to allow mockup, but that'll never work for holding its own weight! So I'll just be patient. Hope you guys have a good one....more to come soon!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Ahh that is just too sick!

There are so many builds going on right now that are blowing other builds out of the water!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Okay brothers and sisters of the asphalt!

A little more done on the bike today. I built the seat support tubes and also mounted the rearset brackets also. Did some more finish grinding and such and had to put her together for mockup to see what she's looking like, and I must say....DAMN! I'm happy with this thing so far. I've mentioned before that bike building is an organic process to me, and the abike starts to tell me through the process what she is supposed to look like. I couldn't be happier so far. She's turning out low, lean and fast looking. Everything is lining up perfectly, and it's chugging along at a wonderful pace right now. Let me know what you guys think!

Seat braces welded in:

Rearset brackets welded on. I was gonna one off a pair, but the way that these lined up with the hole left from cutting the frame was too perfect, so I grafted them on. And MAN does it feel good when sitting in riding position mockup.

And finally some assembled pics to get a general idea of the stance. Love it so far! the rear seat hoop was just sat on there to ad a finishing touch. A new one of one will be made to match the contour of the seat I build. A little more rounded that the stock one is what needs done, but you guys get the idea!

I'm sure you guys have seen that tank before. I hesitated to show it in this state due to recognition, but I think it's cool to show friendship in action on the forum. A very good friend sent it to me, and he needs to see that it's being put to good use. Thanks Troy! Well hope you guys like it as much as I do!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Brother you have been busy. That thing looks fantastic. It is so different and I love it. It does look low, long and mean. Tank doesn't look half bad too. ;D The lines on that thing are sick. Really nice job!
What are your thoughts on the triangle that suports the seat? I love the lines and first thought it should stay open, but then again a panel might enhance the lines even more. You'd just have a peak at the shock and not see the whole thing at once.
Just a thought... Anyhow, that thing rocks!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

It's actually just a 4" extension. It just looks long because of the frame. I wanted it that way. It gives it that low sleek lean look. It also grants clearance for the big meat out back. It also gives it abou a 2" overall drop. I'm looking for a very medial center of gravity.

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Hey Troy!

I did consider making panels for that side. Maybe even with a design cut out of them to give a small window. Paint them the same color as the tank. Great idea bro, and I'm glad you like it man.

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

I forgot one picture. This gives a good idea of the profile. Oh well, another teaser!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

holy shit... that thing looks wicked. Please quit your day job, divorce your wife, and stop doing anything that is not essential to getting thins bike done! I must see the finished product!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Thanks Boom!

I'm committed now, so you'll see more progress regularly. The thing that holds my ass back is waiting for parts! I need to develop telekinesis so that I can know ahead of time what parts I'm going to need and just have them waiting for me here when I need them.

And instead of divorcing the wife, I really just need to train her to wrench...that way I get twice as much done twice as fast!

Thanks for the compliments man!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Looking good with the 200 tank. Think it stretches the look out even more!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Hey thanks curbcast!

The tank looks great IMO. I have one other tank I'm gonna try....I just have to pick it up. A buddy of mine hooked me up for free! It's off of a norton commando 850...we'll see!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Cool. Thats a long one too. lineal. Either one!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

nice build. i really like the swing arm

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Yeah I think it will work too. In due time!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Thanks my94! It was time consuming, but well worth the effort IMO. It really sets the bike off, and to me kicks the snot out of using an arm off of a standard bike.... Gives it a real custom feel. I think it'll rock with a nice tire hugging fender!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Where did you et the tank? Looks like a cb200 tank with added knee pads. Looks cool on that bike - more info please! -MBS

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Hey MBS!

That's exactly what it is. It's cb200 tank with pads. I got it from troybilt on here cause he's such a good man. I don't know what the pads are from, but he could tell you! Thanks for the compliments!
