Thanks Marc! I appreciate it dude! Your bike is lookin rockin too!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

WOW! Loving this build. It's really inspiring.
Plan on teaching myself to weld this winter,
I think it really brings a build(your swingarm and frame) to the next level.
Great stuff.

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Hey Pete!

Thanks for the compliments man. Welding is one of th better things that I have learned to do. My grand dad sat me down with a pile of scrap and a Lincoln buzz box. Several burns, burnt hairs and pieces of metal later and I could make things stick. It's easy once you get the knack and you'll be thanking yourself for it later. I really appreciate the compliments man!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

All right Kanticoy....we're patiently waiting. Hahaha, bro just kidding. Do hope you had a chance to get some stuff done on the scoot!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Hey guys!

Not too much progress. Got my bushings in and installed. I also cut the factory peg mounts off of my re-grafted rearset mounts. Tomorrow they get mounted. You can't tell it in the pic, but all of the welds are now cleaned up, and the bushings are in. The swingarm is solid now! Also new grade 8 hardware on the shock. I had to order a new shock wrench to adjust this sucker. The PO had it cranked down as tight as it would go, and it's STIFF. But it's pretty effin awesome on there. Norton tank on the way. I'm stoked about that just because I have always loved those tanks. Seat work begins when I decide between the two tanks. The Norton tank is about 2" longer than the 200 tank, so it will be a little more stretched. I just don't want it to be too bulbous if you know what I mean. We'll see. Tomorrow: finish rearset mounts, cut off center stand mounts, figure out what to do with the battery, mount the fork up for fitment. Whew. Anyway, here are a few pics of progress. BTW, if you ever need bronze bushings, contact these guys. $14 for the pair shipped, and they can mill any size you need. So much better than the $40 they wanted for "actual" 360 swingarm bushings on the web!

Grinding off the old mounts (notice the crappy "mockup" rear tire ::) ) This makes for some hellacious metal boogers at the end of the day!

More to come tomorrow fellas! And BTW, I'm being diligent Troy! come to Bama and gimme a hand with this sucker!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Hey bro, Thanks for the update. I can't wait to see the Norton tank on that thing! I know we won't be dissapointed! Looking good man. Dude your as bad as me. I hear this all the time, "put some glasses on when your doing that." Hahha, that felt good to be on the giving end of that!
Hey man, I might be comming near in Nov. If so you better believe I'll come over for a few days and get some grease under my nails.

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

man.. even with glasses on Ive had fragments bounce off my cheek, off the inside of the glasses and land in my eye. By this time its going at a much lower speed and has cooled down, but still its annoying. I really dont get how you guys can grind without any eye protection! I know eye patches are always portrayed in a cool light in the movies, but this does not translate into the real world at all!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Hahaha, I forget glasses once in a while too but I do try to remember most of the time now. I've gotten much better. I used to be real bad until.... chipping hot flux from a weld and got a huge molten piece in one of my eyes. Burned itself in real deep. Had to have eye surgury too get it out. Kinda put the scare in me. Lucky to have my sight.

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

I had a emergency room visit a few years ago due to metal in the eye!! I decided it "wasn't that bad" until I couldn't sleep it hurt so bad!! Doctor said since it was hot when hit my eye and because I waited so long to go to the hospital it had started to try to heal. Numbing eye drops and what looked like a dremel tool saved the day!! Really weird seeing the tool come closer and then everything getting blurry for a second lol!! Had to wear sunglasses to the sex pistols the next night lol!!

Alas, I still sometimes don't wear saftey glasses!!!

Your build makes me want to get mine done too!!

I hear that if you get something in the white part you can actually use a strong magnet to suck it out. However this could be the mechanics equivalent to an old wives tale, so ya.. [insert medical disclaimer here]. But just wear some fucking eye protection! You cant ride a motorcycle if youre blind!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

I know I know I know guys. The wife caught me on that one, and I actually got the third degree from her on it too. The silly thing is, is that I have all of the protection...face shield, safety glasses, the works. I just get carried away with my work sometimes and don't do it. I am well aware of the risks. I'm a medic for god's sake! Oh well, live and learn. I've been there too guys. Been to the eye doctor with the crazy drill bit in my eye and everything. And yes, it is true that you can use a magnet to pull it out if you have to. lots of visine and a magnet and it will come on out. We actually do that on the ambulance. I use one of those "hard to reach magnet pens". Works great. But yes, you're right, always use the protection. Shame on me, that's my one f-up picture of the build. I just put it 'cause I wanted a pic that proves that I actually work on these things.

On a lighter note, I did get a score on some metal today. My old neighbor has a house next door (1/4 mile away) that he used to live in. I was walking the property the other day, and noticed a huge stash of stock under the barn. I called him and he said to help myself. So I dragged a crap load of it through the weeds and into the truck today. got a big 4'x4' sheet of 1/4" plate, a bunch of tubing, some angle, and all kinds of flat bar. Good score. He also gave me a nice victor torch, 5 empty bottles (acetylene and oxygen) for trade in cores, a set of Craftsman torch gauges, and a torch cart. This is a mac daddy torch that puts my torch to shame as far as grunt, so I am stoked. Good people are still out there. And the best part is, is that he said come back whenever I need more. And there's LOTS more! So anyway, off to build. Have a good one, and I'll update tonight!

same thing happened to me too. and i had my glasses and a face sheild on. it was itchy as hell. when they drilled it out i was psychin my self out and it was done before i knew it. pretty good sized chunk of metal too. he gave it to me as a "reminder"

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Okay guys and gals.

Quick update before I go off to work the ball game tonight. I got the rearset mounts done, and as usual I was very anal about them and they took a LONG time....perfectionism is a problem. I also got the front fork mounted up to get a ride profile. Norton tank is on the way, so we'll see how that looks. Keep in mind, the front fork I am using isn't this one. I have a nice rebuilt one ready to go that has been powdered with new seals/boots, but there's no sense in dicking that one up in the mucky shop. So here she is as of about an hour ago. Let me know what ya think!

Alright, lots more to go tomorrow, I have all day, dawn till dusk to crack on her, so it'll be rockin' on along!

p.s. Fender is also on the way, I think y'all will like it.

Have a good one fellas!

Now that's what I'm talking about. Dude that is so sweeeeet! More updates, more updates!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Alrighty-o.

Another day of the greasy grimy, metal dust and sweat coming your way from the Kodak camera!

It was a busy day, got a lot done.

First thing I did was remove the old center stand mounts. I haven't decided if I will use the center stand, but either way the factory mounts are very crappy looking. Looks like something they welded on that came off of a sewing machine or something. Bleh. Now that section looks much cleaner, and I think it will stay that way. I am a side stand guy anyway. After that, I began scratching my head over how the rear seat hoop should look. I started thinking about the back of the seat, and I like a nice flat spot to mount a tail light, so I started bending some tube. I think I got it perfect. It may be a little short depending on the tank I end up going with, but I left enough room to give a nice snug ride. I like the way it turned out.

Next I really started looking at the bike and it seemed to "squat" in the rear. It wasn't the look I was going for, so I modified/fabricated a new shock mount, and DAMN! This really set the bike profile off. It took it to the next level IMO. i then proceeded to fabricate a brace for the upper mount (I'm OCD about it being strong enough) and welded that in. It's nice and beefy, and I bounced all over the thing today to give it a brutal test. It's perfect. More finish grinding to all of the welds, and more contemplation on the tank. I really need it to get here so I can decide what I'm gonna do about the seat. So now another day closer to the finale'.

Let me know what ya think guys and gals!!!

Shaved center stand mounts:

Relocated upper shock mount and reinforcement. The welds need some love, but I'm gonna have to disassemble the bike to really get in there. It is TIGHT!!!:

Love the crap out o the way this thing sits now. Can't wait to work more. It's a very motivating process to like the work you've gotten done. Hope you kids have a good night!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

looks like if you lifted the front a little (i noticed the tubes are sitting higher than usual), it'd sit at a very nice level, with a pretty forgiving ride

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

Yep, it's actually back up to stock on the front forks now. The pics were taken prior to me doing that. And you're right, much better. That just goes to show how "squatty " the rear end was though!

Re: A way to waste money: The evolution of a confused '74 360

This build is crazy. Love the new profile, can't wait to see
what exhaust you come up with. WOW!
