Re: Project Gretta....something's in the water....

Nicely done. Do I smell a product line in your future?

Re: Project Gretta....something's in the water....

WOW! flat out just amazing work! well out of my league... top notch man, makes me jelous looking at it!

Re: Project Gretta....something's in the water....

Very nicely done. I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy.....

I'd like to hear more about the ignition system. It sounds awsome.

Re: Project Gretta....something's in the water....

I love it when people come up with different ways of doing things, but why bother? Back in teh day when there was nothing else available, that was what we all had to do, but that's no longer the case.

There are several systems available off the shelf for that bike and a GL1000 DYNA will fit straight on - no muss no fuss. It also fits the CB160/175/200 with very little modification and are not expensive.

For slightly more, you could have a fully programmable state of the art Ignitech system.

I'm not dissing what you did, just suggesting to others that there are many ways to get rid of points.

Can't wait to see your fuel injection set up. Last one I looked at involved GSXR600 K1 throttle bodies because they could be mounted separately and Microsquirt. MOTEC M400 would have been a better choice. If I ever remember to buy a lottery ticket, maybe I'll get back to that project. Good luck with yours.

Yeah, I'm looking for a pair of CBR600 throttle bodies to experiment with fuel injection.

Re: Project Gretta....something's in the water....

Hey teaser, you're wrong on several fronts. The cb360 is an odd duck as far as ignition systems goes. But so are a lot of overhead cam triggered ignition bikes. You have to realize that a standard 180 degree setup like dyna and many many others will absolutely not work because they are designed for crank triggered ignition systems. These bikes have a 2:1 crank to cam rotation on them. What this means is that the pickups have to be set at 90 degrees of eachother. The pickups found in dyna kits and similar are just simply too big to fit in 90 degree orientation. They end up being set at 100 degrees or better which would obviously throw the bike out of time. I had to find a pickup that I could fit at a 90 degree interval, thus creating the right timing. The stock points plate on a 360 is less than 3 inches. They are small.

There is no available Aftermarket kit for a cb360, and even if there were they are pricey. I have a dyna s on my 400f, and it was well over $100. On top of that, it is just a magnetic trigger, my system here is an actual CDI ignition with a powered module....this makes mega spark. The kicker is that it cost me less than $50 to manufacture. Trust me man, I did the research, and this was the most viable solution.

Oh, and thank you brothers for the props, they mean a lot!

Re: Project Gretta....something's in the water....

Without quibbling over where Dyna GL1000 ignition setups bolt onto an engine, saying 'why bother' is silly.
Do you wear velcro zips or do your nike's have laces? Why bother lacing when you can just strap in like my GrandDad used to? Why learn to cook when there's a McDonald's just down the block? Why read when the TV will happily quack at you for hours on end? Why?

Because he can. If you need to ask why, perhaps there's a Prius out there with you name on it. Just hop into those Dockers, strap on your velcro tennies and zip right down to Mickie D's for the latest $1.39 gut bomb.

The rest of us like getting dirty, making something that nobody else has and expanding our minds and capabilities. That's why.

Kiley, you continue to amaze. I am a richer man for knowing you my friend.

Re: Project Gretta....something's in the water....

Kiley,

You are too fucking good at this to be doing anything else. This is truly your calling, brother.

Re: Project Gretta....something's in the water....

Really impressive. You should add a flux capacitor next.

He already has one! but don't tell anyone...he stole uranium from the serbs and they are PISSED!

I explained why I asked and already said I like to see people come up with new solutions, so no one was dissing anyone else.

Kiley is absolutely correct that DYNA is designed for a crank mount which is where I prefer to fit them, And yes, they do take some tweaking to fit on the cam. I managed to fit three around but that's more space than a 90 degree fitting for sure. There are two different DYNA pickup styles and I would have sworn that it was possible to squeeze two in there, but I could be mistaken.

As to whether a CDI with higher voltage, shorter duration is better or worse than an inductive system is being still being debated but there are very few genuine CDI systems used on 4 stroke motorcycles. They are great in a multi-spark configuration but I think the jury is out on which is "better".

But none the less, great work. As I said already, I love top see innovative solutions and out of the box thinking.

I understand the point you are making, about the separation space for the two pickups.

CB160/175/200 are of course 360 degree cranks with single points and double ended coils, so they are much easier to work with either on the cam or on the crank. I should have made that point more clearly.

And yes, a DYNA will cost >$100 and Ignitech is more than that number in Euros and a lot more in greenbacks.

Re: Project Gretta....something's in the water....

Hey teaser, no hard feelings at all. I am a bit of a free spirit when it.l comes to builds, and this one gave me the excuse to peruse the junkyards and test my intelligence. Of course I did try the dyna route first, and the only way I could find to make them fit was to actually hack up the pick up assemblies. That was enough to deter me because I figure I can use my spare pick ups on an rd project rather than hack up a nice part and risk ruining it. I built 22re motors for 4x4s in my youth and decided that I could make something work with readily available parts. The best part is that it works very well and is reasonably adaptable to any 90* bike. best of all it was fun and sticks with grettas "against the grain" nature.

wow man I have a 360 too and I've been looking for away to get rid of my points. I'm really interested that a gl1000 will fit straight on. Or how about the several other systems available off the shelf that fit that bike as you say... please do tell. Guess I've been living in the dark. Boy do I feel stupid.

Troy, Please correct me if I am misinterpreting what you are saying: Is that put up or shut up? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
