Project Odin - XS400F

The Brafasco around here is operated by a bunch of tools. I walked in there and asked them if they had any. They had no idea what I was talking about. I even told them that I knew they sold them. Kinda turned me off of them. Fastenal was pretty much the same deal. The PA ones aren't bad. They're just not as nice as some of the ones with the rubber dust boots and left hand thread. This should do for me just fine. They're made of hardened steel, so they should last a little while.

Just throwing around some ideas.....

I said before that I would be painting the wheels same as body colour (green with white accents), but I had also been thinking of a nice solid gloss black. Maybe still with the polished outer part right by the tire. I was just thinking maybe green and white would be too much. Just wondering what all of you think.

I personally think green wheels would take away from the paintjob.

I like the idea of going black and polishing the rim.

black wheels
im serious. i think its a must. on all bikes. cages too. uh oh. i hope i didnt just cross a line by bringing up cage design.
maybe black with the white in the center of the mags?

What he said, definitely black. Polished rim would look nice too, would give the same sort of contrast that your paint scheme does (i.e. dark colour with a light accent).

You guys are quite the bunch of salesmen!! ;D You've sold me on my own idea. Hopefully I can get started on it sometime..... um, in the next while. Still waiting on the right size replacement rear RoadRider, they gave me a 17 instead of an 18. Working on the GS750 this weekend between rye and gingers and BBQ steak. Could a weekend get better? I SUBMIT THAT IT CANNOT!!! Well, only if I was able to ride my bike there, but that damned snail mail still has my carb parts!

Thanks man! I'm just waiting for the last few things to get it done and running. Should be about a week or so before the parts get here from Mike's. I'll try to make it to an event this summer, but things are fairly busy already. Timmie's nights in T.O. may be too far for this little beastie.

Stayed up til 2:30 this morning painting these wheels. Partly because I was so excited to see what they look like, and partly because with this wheel paint once you start you can't leave it too long. Ya gotta tough it out and finish up to get the nicest finish. Didn't have the time or energy to take pics last night, and was late for work this morning (need sleepy!!). Was it worth it? HELLS YES!!! These things look like sex incarnate!! I'll post some pics tonight. Will likely get the tires on this weekend and new bearings sometime within the next week or so. It helps to know the maintenance supervisor from FAG bearings personally. New bearings for the price of......... well, I know they'll be cheap, so who cares? Just got my shipment of parts and pieces from Mikes today. All my little plugs and terminals for making the wiring harness (the bag of terminals is HUGE, I think I got a little trigger happy with the "Add to cart" button). It's gonna be a good weekend.

Here's some snaps I took tonight. Only problem I have with these tires is that they don't seem to fit the rim very well. The bead didn't give the usual snap into place when pumping up to 55 psi. There's a little place on all four beads that it seems to be hanging back a bit if you look at the groovy lines along the inside of the side wall.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I should do to get this to sit right? I've tried soapy water on the beads, then pump it up. This helped a little bit, but still didn't turn out perfect. I tried hitting the sidewall a bit with a deadblow hammer, helped a bit, but still, not perfect. Do I have to bring these hassies up to a higher psi to get them to seat right? I have two more to do on my buddy's GS750, so any help would be much appreciated. These are tubeless tires running tubes on tube type rims. No crazy lips to try to get the bead over. I know I can't run them like this.

Anywho, some other pics of the wheels sans bearings (as soon as they come I'll post pics of these things on the bike). Lemme know what you all think.

Can't help you with the lip problem you're having but I love the way the wheels turned out. Really like the polished lip. I was planning on doing the same but never really had time this year. I did it for my car rims and really like the look. Good job. What kind of paint did you use?

I would take them to a custom bike shop and ask them- could be you need a really nasty compressor to snap them on quickly, OR that could be the way the tire is until ridden, then it might be able to be reseated.

Wow, it's been a while since I posted last. Not too much of an update yet. I've installed the wheels. Got the beads to seat pretty well with the exception of one spot on the rear. I'll try to fix it yet. New bearings and grease everywhere. Had to wait a little bit, but it was worth it for free bearings.

Drilled the rotors last night. I don't know why everyone says it's so hard. It was just about the easiest thing I've done on this bike. Drew up a template in AutoCAD printed it out and taped it on. Centerpunch it and off we go with a cobalt drill bit and some cutting lube. I had no smoke, no nasty noises, no heat worth speaking of and the bit still looks new after 72 holes. Total cost: $5.99 for a 1/4" bit at PA and about 50mL of cutting lube from a bottle I already had. Pretty cost effective if you ask me. As for time consumption, only about an hour per rotor. Repainted and cleared the centers as well.

If I get them on the bike tonight I'll post up some pics. I know how you all love pics. ;D

Hey Rudy! glad to hear the successful tone in your post! How did you seat the tires? lower air pressure plus rubber mallet or what?

Sorry boys, no pics yet. Stuff for the 650 from Mike's came in yesterday, so we all know what I was busy with. Will try tonight.

For seating the tires I used a combination of rubber mallet and soapy water. Tried filling with about 7-8 psi and then working the beads until it starts to go evenly. Then bring it up to about 50 and start coercing it to go all the way. Also tried to pry the beads up a bit, which helped. Yamaha rims must be a tad larger than Suzuki rims, cuz last weekend I put the tires on my buddy's GS750 and they went on like butter.

Hopefully I get the whole 650 bottom end ripped apart and back together tonight. Gonna replace the starter gear and all the seals and gaskets. Gotta check out all the bearings as well. Just to make sure. Hopefully I have a bike on the road for May 24 weekend. ;D

Yeah, it's quite a change from last august when it rolled off the truck. Just wiring left to do before it'll run. I wire stuff all day at work, so I find it hard to get motivated to wire more when I get home. I have everything to get it done, just gotta take the time and do it.

Got looking yesterday and thought I may chop the front fender back a bit and paint it as well. Have to do some more looking and trow around some ideas, but likely will do it. That front tire JUST fits into the stock fender.

A few cosmetic things to do, like license plate bracket and tank badges. Should be quite a looker when all's said and done. Gettin pretty excited to take it for the first ride.
