Yes valvesprung, you are correct; tire sizes vary by manufacturer. I am going by the actual data from Avon for the Road Riders. The 130/80-18 is actually 5.4" at it's widest point. I could get a wider tire on this, but I'm somewhat limited by the wheel width which is 2.15. As it is Avon recommends a 2.50" minimum wheel width for that tire, but I am going to use it anyway. That will also make the tire a bit narrower when it mounted on a 2.15. The 80 series is 26.5" tall. For comparison the the same tire in a 120/90-18 is 5.1" wide and 26.6" tall.
Not all tire makers publish their actual sizes like Avon does and that's why I like them. The info is available on their website of course, but I'll attach the pdf.
Thanks for keeping an eye one me. I appreciate the feedback! Keep it coming folks.
Sorry, I never answered your question.I just went back and saw it. Yes, I wire brushed everything; all the hardware on the entire bike and painted most of it with Rust-Oleum Bright Coat Metallic Finish 7715 Aluminum. Its a poorboy method instead of buying all new, or stainless hardware. It holds up OK. It's not super tough, but it's cheap and looks good.
I got the ignition switch and condenser mounted. I will need to change the terminals on the plug wire ends to fit. I also mounted the battery holder and fitted the wiring harness. I want to replace the regulator and rectifier with a combo unit to clean up the look. I may fab some side covers also.
Got the tin primered, need to sand and prime a few more times before paint. Bolted up the stock head pipes to see what I need to do about an exhaust. Polished off the fins on the right side o the engine. Going to weld up the seat pan and get it upholstered. Need to install the brake shoes and buy some tires and mount them up. Gotta get this up and riding - the weather has been nice! Winter passed us by this year.
The pipes come close together at one point so maybe I'll build a collector and then run big pipe out the side with a nice muff. I'll probably just build a complete system. Megs has all the bits.
Bike is coming along great! Now that I see it in the frame the motor will stand out nice and compliment the tins. Can wait to see it all together. Keep the posts coming!
OK ordered tires, tubes, rim strips, and a battery. The tires arrived today so I set the rear one in the frame for a look. Gonna be sweet. I settled on Bridgestone Battlax BT-45V's 130/80-18 rear and 10/80-18 front.
Primed the tins with white so the burnt orange pops when I spray it on.
The Motobatt came today. Same dimensions as the OE but the posts are opposite. They don't make a 12N5-4B equivalent so I got the 12N5-3B, same size just + & - are opposite. No biggie. It's also 7 Ah instead of 5. And it looks cool.
I started fiddling around today and ran the pipes together into a collector I cut off an old exhaust. I found some 2" tubing to run off the collector and up. I'll get that mounted and them measure for a cone.
I got some more done on the pipe today. I fitted the outlet pipe up to the collector until I had a good tight fit and then I welded it up. The collector was pretty rusty and dirty so it kept blowing crap out of the puddle and contaminating my electrode, but I got it sealed up. Not the prettiest bead but it hard to get a stack o dimes look when you're welding dirty material.
I cut the steering lock off because it's ugly and who needs a steering lock. I cut the fork stop off by mistake but I welded it back on. I got a little overzealous with the cutting wheel!
Hey I'm glad you all like the bike. I mounted the tires today and finished welding up the exhaust. Gonna roll up a stainless meg soon with a tapered angled reverse cone...stay tuned!
your macine is looking good and the motor is bad ass. Its great what your doing w exhaust. I have been looking at mine all winter for something like that in order to make room for rearsets. I figured there was no way I would find a collector like that. its great you did.
