Recommendation for a welder

Oh, and I didn't realize until tonight what the purpose of stitch welding is. He just showed me how to do it, but he did the entire bead top to bottom without stopping. Watching some vids on body panel work I understand you tack weld the piece on, and then put more tacks in between the old tacks etc. etc. and then join them together section by section to avoid warping the metal.

One of life's big mysteries over and done with. Don't know why I thought it was so complicated. Now to buy a bottle of C25.

I use a copper backing plate to keep from having blowouts, and you can start and stop to keep heat from building up. You can fill small holes with weld, but larger ones you need to add material.

You can just fill with weld if you dont let it get to big, let it cool and then tack, repeat. Watch the metal and dont let it get to hot as you're welding. After you weld for a while you'll know when to stop to prevent blowouts, the steel will talk to you.

I am too cheap to pay what a welding supply shop wants for copper spoons/paddles, so I just go to the plumbing section of a hardware store, buy a copper pipe fitting (the ones for adapting from one diameter pipe to another work well) and beat it flat with a BFH when I get home. A lip turned down to hold it with vice-grips and you have a handy-dandy copper backing paddle.
