Well, progress has been slow lately as I've had my hands full with my dad. He's near retirement (unwillingly so) and is fighting tooth and nail to stick around the shop. unfortunately that fills my time with fires that need to be put out, broken and missing tools and the like.
But....I did get a wee bit of work done mainly on the tank mounting.
Tank mount Rev.3(?)
So Haplo-84 on DTT made a good suggestion that perhaps the pin mount could incorporate s recess to locate the mushroomy bit at the end of the pin. I kinda smacked my own forehead 'why didn't I think of that?' and went about reworking the piece. I had some nifty brass hex rod that I have plans for later but could spare enough to do this. It raises the tail end up about 1/2" which is good as it was quite close to the backbone even after grinding down the cobby factory weld.
I also rethought my front mounting setup. Previously I'd made some neat looking brass 'pads' that used the pins in the factory frame and fit the bottom of the tank, but as pointed out they'd lead to metal fatigue and eventual failure. Fuel running down on a hot engine....not good. With that in mind and a need for vibration isolation I simplified my approach.
A strip of 1" high density seat foam glued to the spine settles the tank at just about the right angle and once the leather belt is there to hold it down it'll be 'perfect'. Not shown are two little delrin blocks and 1/2" foam along the side of the spine that will keep the tank from wobbling side to side.
I also got my front end lined up, though at the moment is doesn't look like much, from the $25 XS650:
It's a little tough to visualize as it stands, but the plan is to turn the sliders smooth on the lathe and sandblast them to match the other bits on the bike. I have a nice new alloy 21" hoops and fresh stainless spokes for the hub. I have a plan for the caliper mount that I learned from Tony Foale that's more of a performance
mod system but will lend a little visual excitement to the front end.....but that's for later.
