Sakura the Sake Rocket

Well, progress has been slow lately as I've had my hands full with my dad. He's near retirement (unwillingly so) and is fighting tooth and nail to stick around the shop. unfortunately that fills my time with fires that need to be put out, broken and missing tools and the like.
But....I did get a wee bit of work done mainly on the tank mounting.

Tank mount Rev.3(?)

So Haplo-84 on DTT made a good suggestion that perhaps the pin mount could incorporate s recess to locate the mushroomy bit at the end of the pin. I kinda smacked my own forehead 'why didn't I think of that?' and went about reworking the piece. I had some nifty brass hex rod that I have plans for later but could spare enough to do this. It raises the tail end up about 1/2" which is good as it was quite close to the backbone even after grinding down the cobby factory weld.

I also rethought my front mounting setup. Previously I'd made some neat looking brass 'pads' that used the pins in the factory frame and fit the bottom of the tank, but as pointed out they'd lead to metal fatigue and eventual failure. Fuel running down on a hot engine....not good. With that in mind and a need for vibration isolation I simplified my approach.

A strip of 1" high density seat foam glued to the spine settles the tank at just about the right angle and once the leather belt is there to hold it down it'll be 'perfect'. Not shown are two little delrin blocks and 1/2" foam along the side of the spine that will keep the tank from wobbling side to side.

I also got my front end lined up, though at the moment is doesn't look like much, from the $25 XS650:

It's a little tough to visualize as it stands, but the plan is to turn the sliders smooth on the lathe and sandblast them to match the other bits on the bike. I have a nice new alloy 21" hoops and fresh stainless spokes for the hub. I have a plan for the caliper mount that I learned from Tony Foale that's more of a performance mod system but will lend a little visual excitement to the front end.....but that's for later.

I like all the subtle details buddy! I am at work right now and can't really look through this thread completely or your blog due to slow internet and you have lots of "eye candy" on your blog haha! But when I get home I'll be taking some notes down for things I'll try on my build.

Bottom line, you're an inspiration and I hope my bike has half the art of just your shift handle haha!

Thanks gents, I appreciate the kind words. Ronnie, if I can offer assistance lemme know!

Mike, you got a computer yet or are you just buying cool old chops with you money these days?

Cool old chops. Haha. Ive been using the ol' ladys PC for a bit. I have the "thing" you and "that guy" know about ready for ya. Ill send it your way this evening. Also, Ive been hammering out another little ditty for ya as well. Should be able to wrap that up this evening also.

...'the tire is on the rim'...
I repeat, 'the tire is on the rim'.....
proceed with drop then meet up at safehouse.

(we're not spies, we just play them on TV)

Looks awesome swagger. I am currently enjoying big fat music monday, a day late, tried to post on the blog but it kept taking me to a create my own blog page?? oh well. enjoyed today's post a lot.

Cheers, oh and lucky bastard with the $25 XS650!

Glad you're diggin' it mister! Comments should be open to non-bloggers, but I'm no expert....I feel pretty good that I can post and shit actually shows up.
I'll look into it though because I don't really have a good answer.....

could be me, I stopped a spent some $$ on beer to celebrate the offer and may not be the most clear headed!

Hey thanks Andoor!

So it's been pretty slow going lately but I did get my bearings for the front end swap ordered and have started rebuilding the forks: fresh springs, emulators(since I have'm already) and enough lowering to be almost silly. As soon as I have some visually interesting update (pics) I'll post....Today I'm working on the rear end, got my axle and the 19" donor wheel back there: working on spacers and the sprocket carrier so I can get the rim laced and a tire on it. She's gotta come off the table so I can get Valvesprung's kz650 started.....
