Thanks!
The plan is to turn it upside down and shake tomorrow, if that doesnt work ill definitely try the air trick!
Thanks.
Such a stupid design.

Agreed! Dubm design. You would think after building a few hundred thousand of them the Jap's would have come up with something better. Good luck. Keep us posted.

Getting more done every day.
Have started the painting process.
yesterday I got the side covers painted.
I went with stainless steel appliance epoxy. I don't know if it will hold up the the heat, but of not it's easy to pop them off and do it again. And they look awesome.
I'll get some photos to later today.

Also did the wheels. Ha no desire to take them all apart as they are true and looked pretty good already, so I hit every single spoke with 150 grit sand paper and then the same to the rims. Masked it all off and hit it with black appliance epoxy.they turned ou great.

Should start reassembly next week. Then finish the tank and build the seat.
Getting so close I can taste it! This is my favorite part of a build, past the halfway point so every little job moves you that much closer to that first start.

Re: Sonic's 68 CB350 Build (New Concept Photo)

Looking good. I like the knee dents, I'm too scared to try it out on my tank!

Sonic's 68 CB350 Build (New Concept Photo)

Thanks,
It went alright. I originally wanted much smaller dents, but its not possible with this tank, it just naturally dents like this, which was both good and bad.
I ended up liking it a lot though.

Swivel,
I was already thinking of doing that.
That will be in phase two come winter time.
I'm getting the itch to get her back on the road at the moment. I'm missing prime riding weather!

Re: Sonic's 68 CB350 Build (New Concept Photo)

Completely irrelevant.... is one of your mtrs on the jk mounted backwads?

Sonic's 68 CB350 Build (New Concept Photo)

Swivel that would be appreciated!

Ltgeorge: yup. The damn things are directional so the spare is only good for one side or the other. Bent the hell out of a rim a while back on the trail and just haven't switched the tire around.

Re: Sonic's 68 CB350 Build (New Concept Photo)

Ouch that sucks man!! i know the feeling though.. i had mtrs for a while on mine.. loved them!!
Found some surplus kevlar reinforced bfg bajas from a guy in Kansas i think kidna took the fun out of wheelin but the rubi will go over anything now!

Sonic's 68 CB350 Build (New Concept Photo)

I run military surplus 37"s on steelies so I could honestly care less about the rim or the tire haha. They only run me 75 bucks each so it's no big loss haha.

Re: Sonic's 68 CB350 Build (New Concept Photo)

the old 12 lugs that are re centered? you didnt get the from trailworthy did you?

Re: Sonic's 68 CB350 Build (New Concept Photo)

Nope, I dont run beadlocks, just standard steelies.
But ill get some from trailworthy eventually.
Bikes have taken priority lately.
I can build an entire bike from the scrapyard up for less than it costs for a set of wheels. And its a hell of a lot more fun.

Yeah im findin that out now... mine jeeps almost done anyways.... the beadlocks from him were pretty cheap though and there allright for steelies i guess... i like the fact that there two piece and break down easy

Got the engine assembled today.
In classic fashion I installed the cam chain sprocket backwards, putting my cam timing about 60 degrees out. That was a fun conundrum to figure out hahah. As it turns out the "L" on the sprocket in face means that it faces the left side, it won't work either way as I previously thought.

Pics to come tomorrow. For now here's a preview of the color scheme. Looks amazing in person.

The oil filter cover is trash, a new one in black will be replacing it eventually.

The POR 15 engine paint seems to get the job done incredibly well.
It is way too thick out of the can, they say to put one coat on and call it a day.....
well that doesnt look so hot. The cases were painted in this manner and I wasnt happy with it.
So for the jugs and up i thinned it about 20% with lacquer thinner and used 2 coats. It looks much much better. At this thickness its self leveling and looks good even brushed on.

So far it stands up just fine to alcohol and brake cleaner. Wet it wipes right off with brake cleaner, but once dry it doesn't budge. Much happier with it than with the Duplicolor engine paint (rattle can) i used last time. It doesn't look quite as pretty right off the bat but after a few gas spills and some wear it will look 1000x better than the chipped and fading duplicolor.

Next, I went after the fork springs, they were very rusty, so I dipped them in some Hydrochloric to fix that and they got a good coat of appliance epoxy (again we will see if it holds up to the flexing, if not its easy enough to remove them)
Before acid dip:

After about 30 seconds:

HCL is an excellent rust remover, as long as you wash the piece thoroughly afterwards and hit it with paint in a few minutes (flash rust is bad after that)
Planning to run the springs exposed.

Re: Sonic's 68 CB350 Build (Engine done)

Hey let me know if you need extra hands at any time Im down in 5pts

Re: Sonic's 68 CB350 Build (Engine done)

Pulled the trigger on rearsets today, along with all new cables.
Damn this is getting expensive ???

LtGeorge, will do, i may need some help with reassembly here soon

Re: Sonic's 68 CB350 Build (Engine done)

Incidentally, if you use a strong acid like HCl (aka Muriatic) you need to bake the metal for several hours afterward. Acids cause what's known as hydrogen embrittlement within high strength steel and the only way to cure it is four hours at 400°F and you have to get them in the oven within four hours of removing them from the acid.

Sonic's 68 CB350 Build (Engine done)

Sonreir I'm aware of the issue, but with a 30 second dip and immediate rinsing I don't foresee any problems.

Been doing it for years with no issues (crosses fingers) so we shall see. I wouldn't use it for structural components.

If the spring rate on my fork springs suffers its easy enough to replace them but I highly doubt it will be an issue.

As far as the restarts I picked up the loaded gun ones from DCC.

Been debatin for a month or so, and finally pulled the trigger. Was going to make my own but they wouldn't turn out anywhere near as nice as I dont have my lathe or welder here with me in cola. It came down to about 120 for no name ones from Asia or 160 for a tried and true alternative.
