Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550 - Lots of Pics In This Update
I took some time off today to get my head clear and try to work on some bike stuff. I went down to Long Beach (about an hour away from my spot) and got my seat hoop from Lossa Engeneering. It's a pretty neat shop. If you've watched Cafe Racer TV, you've seen this guy.
I had to open up the bend some as I cut that bastard down.
Once I opened it up, I cut it down to, what I thought would be, a test fit for the upsweep. Turns out... I really like what I had down and continued with that cut.
I cleaned up the cuts and got the slugs and chamfers set up:
All Tacked in:
Next the hoop:
Welds done:
Cleaned a little:
Then I had fun with Photoshop to mess with a RocCity Seat that I had around. I am not going to use this seat for this build but what I transformed the picture in to is close to what I will have in the end.
Im pretty damn happy with what I did today and Im glad I got to meet the guys down in this shop.
Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550 - Lots of New Pics!
When I went to Lossa Engineering, I saw what they did with battery boxes and I decided to, basically, rip them off completely.
Started off bending some flat stock to fit in between the frame rails, then some angle iron with some smaller flat stock:
I made some gussets and drilled them out. I didnt have templates so they are a bit uneven in the hole distribution but, none-the-less, I think it was a neat looking was to attach the top piece of angle iron:
To keep the thing in there, I put a small piece of flat stock to stretch a rubber battery holder:
Then I mocked it up and took some measurements so I know how high the seat needs to be in order to clear this thing:
I also made up some gussets for the rear section where the hoop attaches to where I cut the frame:
Hills... you freaked me out man... The packaging has instructions for a acid battery only there were no holes, like Kanticoy said. I was cussing out the little pricks at Cycle Exchange from here to kingdom come. Tanks to Kants post I was able to reinsure that I bought the right battery.
Started work on the shaping the seat today. Looking forward to getting it done.
Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550 - Poll is all Tied Up. I need more opinions!
So I wanted to wait until the seat was all bondo'd and sanded before I posted anything but I couldn't wait any longer and I have some questions as well. As most people I started with green foam, worked a shape and glassed. Nothing too special. The only thing is that this time I used parallel lights like surfboard shaping to get the contours right. Im sure its not perfect, but fuck... the thing is handmade. Some of the hard points Im proud of was getting it to match the contours of the frame rails pretty well and the way I mounted the thing with hinge pins.
Taking shape
At this point I did a test fit to see how I was lining up. My intentions were to round out the back but my buddy and girl stopped me before I could even pick my head up from fitting the thing and said that the back looked sick! I def agreed and that accident made the "cut"... or survived it I should say...
First layer of glass:
hit it with the glassmat:
Another layer of glassmat on the inside and a layer of weave on the outside and here is what it looked like untrimmed:

Now for the mounting. I made a skeleton out of flat stock and popped some mounting tabs on to the rear of the frame. the front connects to where the tank is mounted and the whole outfit is secured from moving by hinge pins (which I have to trim down b/c they only had 2" at the store).
The center hole with the yellow is where the seat frame mounts:

The frame test fitted:
Secured to the seat:
Then locked in:
I haven't taken a picture of the thing the way it sits now. Maybe I'll wait for that in the reveal. Hehehe
Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550 - Pics of New Seat
Looking good man, may I ask why you used woven fiberglass then a mat cloth? how many layers did you use?
It looks like you went back over it with woven fabric after the mat.
