The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- New Electrical

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Trying to figure out exhaust...

Looks clean. You have to mix that, ya? Not in a rattle can?

100% rattle can, all painters touch rustoleum

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Trying to figure out exhaust...

I've been trying to get the exhaust gasket out of the head... anyone have any tricks to get them out so I can replace it with the new smash rings?

That thing looks to be just as flat as it would be without it there .. I say smash right over it.. But if you are not in to that , try a flat head or a razor blade knife..

Started bobbing my front fender today. It's tough, being that I had to fit a 550 fender on GL1000 forks. It's coming along:

Then I did a small number on the stem nut. Anyone guess what it is?

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Started Electrolysis...

Thanks, Bruno. Hope to hook up a garage door opener to it.

So I started electrolysis this afternoon. I tried my luck last week but I bought a charger that was "too smart" for this job. went back and paid a little more money, but I hope in the end it'll be worth it.

here is the set up:

I used Distilled Water b/c it's the cleanest thing I could get:

With Washing Soda, which, incase you didn't know, is really fucking hard to find and I ended up having to go to the dreaded WalMart as a last resort to buy it (grrrrrrr):

I plugged up the bung with a rubber stopper:

and this is the trickle charger I am using on 2amps:

I used 8tsp to a gallon of the Washing Soda. There is about 2 cups of soda in there (8tsp = 1/2 cup). I hope this works.

I also inherited this from a budy, so Im going to try to drill out my rotors.

Bought my jets, rearset linkage kit and Im about to get high temp powder and new electrical clips. I can feel the end coming but there is still so much more to do...

After one hour of running survey says:

That didnt last long. Charger blew. Greeeeeeaat.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Started Electrolysis...

Get a cheap charger and run it longer
Low voltage should work better (although I forget why)

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Started Electrolysis...

Charger is working again... but Im not getting much of a response out of the set up. It might be that I got most of the rust out with the metal rescue, but the spine of the tank is still in really rough shape.

I can hear the bubbles working. idk. Maybe that part of the tank is just gone and I have to por 15 over it.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Started Electrolysis...

Also, I started working up on the exhaust. I bought a old 2-1 set up and planned on using the headers and modifying the couplers to the hulks. Here is where I am:

I need to tighten that bend and notch the straight pipe but im not sure if I can get that pipe to catch in a bender. Anyone able to comment on that?

Excited about these coming in. Can get the linkage locked up and then exhaust.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Tank Sealed, Starting Wiring and Exhaust

Another purchase came in the other day and I forgot to put it here:

Im hoping to start the wiring this weekend and maybe fire the thing.

Ugh. Wiring. It was fun for the first 8 hours. :(

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Tank Sealed, Starting Wiring and Exhaust

Hahahaha.... I'm looking forward to parts of it. I bought all the connections, as you can see, but I'm trying to use as much of the existing loom as possible.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Tank Sealed, Starting Wiring and Exhaust

No electrical this weekend. I got the shifter rearset mocked up:

Working on the brake side, it seems like I might be able to use the existing rod but it looks disgusting. Any thoughts?
