The Tortoise: cb350 -Now with metal flake

Re: The Tortoise: cb350

Got home today, pulled the bike into the hobby room and went to work, i figured out the pulsing issue while i was at work.

The wiring scematic i based my system off is from chris's 360. In his diagream he wires the regular to ground, to the yellow wire of the alternator, and to rectifier. If you compare this to the OEM honda diagram this is incorrect. What i can gather from my electronics guru is that instead of smoothing out the 12v+ i had smoothed the ground.

A quick redo was in order. The regulator should be wired inline to the 12V switched source after the master relay and not to the rectifier. The terminal i had the rectifier wired to should go to ground. After all this, I wired a switch in-line to turn the HID headlight off/on just incase it was too much for the stock charging system.

I was out for a good hour and no pulsing as far as i can see, everything seems to be working fine now. Oh man does the bike haul ass. I've still got a grin pasted on my face.

I'll post up a new diagram sometime this weekend when i have a chance to sit down and draw it out neatly in illustrator.

No pics as i was to busy riding. Tomorrow for sure.

Re: The Tortoise: cb350

Congratulations bud. The bike looks fantastic. I love your attention to detail. That ride today must have felt great! Really makes sense about the regulator. Glad you figured it out. Keep us posted if you would. I'll be wiring my bike this weekend so hopefully I can learn from you.

Re: The Tortoise: 04/17/10 DONE!!

Thanks for your kind words Troy, I'll post up that edited diagram in a few hours.

What a day.

Got up early, 7am, to ride up to Dip's house to help him finish his bike. I figured I'd miss all the traffic in toronto if i got up and out early. Everything was great, bike started up first kick like usual, did my walk around, everything was good and off I went.

I made it 11km and the bike just died on me. No hint of anything wrong, just 1 second going 80, next motor konked out. I'm screwed at this point, nobody i know has a truck and it's starting to rain. So i do what any broken down chappe would do. I called my wife, woke her up (if you read this, sorry again ) who rented a ziptruck to come and get me. So I stood out there for an hour waiting for her and not one person stopped to ask if i was ok or needed help. I love this city some days. My wife shows up with this Tacoma, no ramps or tie downs. I hoist the bike in manually and jump in back. She drives like a maniac all the way home, the bike is bobbing around and all the while i'm in the bed getting rained on freezing my ass off. I realized when we got back that i had packed an extra sweater in my bag just incase I got cold. Typical.

So i get the bike home, there's no power after the main relay. Ripped the seat off, checked everything out turns out it was 1 bad crimp on the main power feed. les sigh...cut the connectors off, solder it all up tight and it's all good.

I just got back from a 30km ride, and all i can say is i love this thing. I'll need to play with the clipon's to find the perfect position for them, but aside from that I can find no fault in this thing. I grabbed a few pictures when i got back to the building.

Re: The Tortoise: cb350 04/17/10 DONE!

Matt,

Sorry to hear about your troubles this morning.

Do you feel like you're reaching forward to far right now when you ride it?
How does the seat feel after a 30km ride?

Bike looks great!

Pavel,

The bars have to move up a slight bit, probably to the underside of the upper clamp.
Seat feels fine, it's actually quite comfy to ride.

Wiring diagram i just did up. Sorry it's sloppy, i'll redo it in illustrator when i've got another free hour or 2. (note the headlight is wrong the lowbeam should be wired through the switch)

Looks great Matt.
I'm glad it was only a small wiring glitch and not something major.

Rad bike! Love the white tank. Looks like a design lab prototype

Re: The Tortoise: cb350 04/17/10 DONE!

WOW! Inspriational build! Its amazing looking! Congrats on finishing. That exhaust note is menacing...LOVE IT!

Re: The Tortoise: cb350 04/17/10 DONE!

Thanks all!

I'm getting much more comfortable with it, 200km in and it still runs great (i'm actually suprised by this). It's sprung an oil leak though, it's on the right side of the motor by the spark plug. Any idea's? I'll have to investigate it further this weekend. I think i'll check the torque on the HG tonight.

It's quite the head turner, random people stopped and ask about it. I have to laugh though, most the time they think it's a Ducati.

Oh...the rear shocks are horrid, but what can you expect from cheap as chip shocks. They're WAY WAY WAY overdamped, I'm surprised my ass doesn't have a bruise yet, need to address that asap.

I've also been thinking about changing the paint colour, any idea's or suggestions?

Re: The Tortoise: cb350 04/17/10 DONE!

Thought you'd never ask! YES change the color... it kinda looks like Gel Coat like you didn't paint it.

I'll work up a few Ps color schemes I've been thinking about. Check back later!
