the zombie apocalypse thread...

WEAPONS:
Small caliber hand gun - You want initial penitration, but the bullet to rattle around in the skull. The mob liked 22s for a reason.
Long range high powered rifle - Only good in the hands of those trained to use them, but highly effective.
Explosives are almost useless. If it doesnt destroy the brain instantly, it doesnt help.
Shotguns are only good in very close quaters.
Melee weapons are a last resotr ONLY!

here i am at last falls Zombie walk

Does anybody here read Field and Stream and/or Outdoor Life? There was a great article in one of them about zombie guns. The most impressive was an AR-15 with a spear launcher attached under the barrel.

That was recent, I save it as I have a sub to it!

I searched for a pic of it online but couldn't find one. Don't know how effective it would be against zombies, but it would look intimidating to hoarders + looters!

Ok guys, most of these plans, except those classified as shelter in place lack a key element. Versatility. What do you do when you reach your destination and find squatters already entrenched?

Personally I have a trusted friend in the country with a nice fortified spread, but long distance travel may mot be an option. As a result my plan includes a short range base of operations to prepare. I needed a target that was plentiful, stocked, an relatively fortified, but one that could be breached initially if needed to gain entry. I settled on a home improvement super center. Glass doors can be entered, even if locked, then fortified with the bountiful supplies and equipment inside. Once in you have mid range stores in the form of sports drinks, jerky, and power bars as well as snacks for the kiddies.

Once battlements are improvised, begin prepping weapons, armor, and armored personnel transport from rental trucks. Take time as allowed or needed for prep. Vehicle can be converted to run off of wood gas supplied by ample lumber. Once prepared raid nearby walmart or sams for long range supplies. If capable escape to greener pastures.

If escape is not possible, the garden center supplies seeds and growing supplies in a convenient protected area that should hold you over once short term supplies dwindle. If the situation becomes permanent sprinkler tanks can be converted to gravity fed rain water collectors. Filtration supplies are on hand. Furniture, grills, plentiful propane, and heavy equipment are on hand to provide ease and comfort. There is also the items needed to barter should the need arise.

Ultimately an exodus will have to occur, and you'll have plenty of medical supplies and essentials to get you by including basic meds. Armor up and travel in style. Guns will have to be brought or acquired, but that doesn't seem to be an issue with many here.

The best part is it is an unlikely target for unfriendlies, and the hordes will over look it entirely. Even zombies know home depot is a ghost town as far as employees go. Have you ever tried to find help in the plumbing section on a Tuesday afternoon?

So there you go. A versatile short, mid, or long term facility easily protected and readily available. If the first one is occupied there is always another a block away. The possibilities are endless for the mad scientist and MacGuyver types around here.

My .02 on the matter!

Oh yeah, reference "The Colony" from the Science channel. Not about zombies, but a good deal of practical (and not so practical) post apocalyptic ideas.

Cresent, that is pure fuckin' genious. I love that idea. Consider my local Lowe's a refuge for any wandering living. there is a Wal Mart right next door. i will blast my way to ownership of both....

Will share with true friends.

yeah the colony is awesome! even though it was a reality show sorta, sometimes they seemed to take it a little too seriously, like they acted like they really WERE the last ones left, and they were doctors and shit.

WTF good would an AR15 be? Theyre like HD's, parts everywhere but reliable?

Near useless POS. They are very picky rifles with small rounds. They get dirty fast, they jam exceptionally easy if they are too dirty, if the ammo is not correctly loaded in magazine is not seated properly. While your in the middle of a field strip you find a zombie eating your brain and go Oh shit...

They are accurate enough to 100 yards, little kick and relatively light, but then it comes down to being zombie food forget em.

AK 47, there's a reason that third world countries use them.

Good enough that the US armed forces gives the cousin (M-16) to it's troops. Good enough that law enforcement uses them. Good enough that there's such a strong following for them that there ARE aftermarket parts readily available. What does bullet size have to do with lethality? A 17 HMR can kill just as fast as a cannonball?

And third world countries use AK-47's because they are cheap and have been produced in the millions.

hahaha, the M16, AR15 and C7/ 5.56 NATO round aren't designed to kill. They are designed to disable you. Meaning you get shot, fall down and instead of having one man dead you have one man wounded and two of his buddies trying to carry him away. Thats why they are the basic assault rifle. Oh yea, there cheep, and lght. That's why law enforcement and military use them. LOWEST BIDDER.

Zombies require stopping power. 5.56x45 wont do it, 7.62x39 (AK) or 7.62x51 (the old FN) will.

Third world countries use them because they are tough enough to survive that kind of environment. You could dig one out of a mud pit from the past 10 years and it will fire. You blow 100 rounds through your AR, M, C and it will need some cleaning or a hellova lotta lube before it will fire reliably again.

556NATO to the brain pan will take care of things nicely. My AR is good for 1-2" groupings at 500yards and it's a largely stock Bushmaster with a couple trigger tweeks and a rail I milled for accessories.

Now, personally for firearms used against the horde, there's just no perfect piece. Anything in 308 will be heavy and generally speaking mobility and stealth are going to be your biggest offensive tools. I love the idea of a single cartridge for the entire load out. Being a HUGE 1911 fan (two Kimbers, a Colt and a Springfield), it's a good round that can punch big holes, empty out a cranium just fine and offers lots of poke without a lot of weight.
I've been eyeballing a Featherlite .45ACP carbine with a 20" bull barrel for a year or so after shooting one at the range. 200-250yard shots are do-able though I'd like a couple more inches of barrel for that. with 200rds in the drum-mag, you can put a lot of mushheads down.
Really a 45ACP pistol, a decent carbine and 12ga for room clearing are about all you'd need.

Swagger, have you looked into any of the rifles from Kel-Tec? Been awhile since I looked into it, but they make their rifles to accept magazines from misc pistols. Pretty cool stuff.

I would love to see that grouping.

I think it comes down to dropping power. In a frantic run where your being chased by a hoard you cant take your time for aimed pot shots. A spray of hot and fast lead with the capabilities to blow grape fruit sized exit holes anywhere will do something. A zombie with a poorly aimed shot to the leg with a .308 will fall due to lack of leg and slowly crawl its way along, the 556, I doubt. A gut shot that severs the spine or nails the hip will drop it.

I can attest to that grouping BR! I love shooting long range and have a longe range shooting range set up on our farm. I can send .223 rounds from my AR into a 10 clay at 1000-1200 yards with an accuracy rate of better than 90%. I can put my 22-250 into a 10 clay at 1500 yards 100% as long as it is not windy! I have a leopold VX7 3-15x50 on the AR with two 4 inch shades attached and a Ziess 6-20x50 on the 22-250 which is a remington model 700 varmit with a bi-pod, custom bolt, and custom trigger. The scope has a hand dial set to the balistics of the remington core-loc 70 grain rounds and a windage dial, that I am not good at using....yet! If you know your shit and practice enough, grouping an AR in 2" at 500 is childs play! As long as the wind is not too bad!
Gun shooting and hunting are my major hobbies and have been since I was a young kid. I am also deadly with a compound bow within 50 yards!

I agree on the not being ONE perfect weapon. I have a few that I would carry.

I have a Taurus Judge....

DSC00272.jpg

It is a .45 long colt, or 4:10 shotgun shell revolver pistol. It would be loaded with alternate rounds of 4:10 buck shot and .45 hollow points.

I also have a Springfield XD-M .40.

17 rounds of .40 in one clip. Amazing. I would be carrying at least 4!

I have a Mossberg 500A tactical shotgun for tearing things up....

Mossberg-500-Tactical-01.jpg

And of course a Bushmaster's AR-15 for the sniping/longer distance shooting.

I'm still building my list of needs. A perfect vehicle is in the works too. I want a 4x4 econoline....armored of course. The work version with less windows...diesel of course for my biodiesel plant I have set up:
