Convinced! ;)

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 12 2010 - I love the smell of metal filings in the morning!

Looks like I might have a line on a proper replacement tracker front hub with disc provisions (TT hub).... holding my breath. Won't be cheap, but not much more than a used Z1 or other non-tracker hub would have been, and for the extra few bucks, its the right thing to do.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 12 2010 - I love the smell of metal filings in the morning!

If you want spokes (nice, but imho the OEM mags aren't bad either),
why don't you just use a standard SR500 wire wheel?

Best regards
Sven

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 12 2010 - I love the smell of metal filings in the morning!

You're not from around here, are you ;)

The SR only came with mags in North America (unless someone wants to tell me different). SR spoked wheels are rarer than, uh, well, they're rare.

Most people find a pair of XS650 wheels to bolt on. But... the SR also only came with disc rear brakes in NA. So, you're into swapping out the XS swingarm too, for an easier conversion. Friend of mine just went through it on his SR.

The front XS650 wheel bolts right on, but you need a bit of work in the back end.

I also really wanted 'real' dirt tracker wheels, which is what I have now ;)

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 12 2010 - I love the smell of metal filings in the morning!

Tim,
Sometimes it's hard to "do the right thing", but fer sure, you're doing the right thing with real tracker wheels.
For me, the call about a dual seat is er, ah,... anyway, a Harley XR seat, a Long Knight squareback seat, a Big Bike Racing seat and one or 2 other "real" dirt track seats have enough room for a friend, should you run into that issue. All have been mounted on SR's.
Makes me want to build one as a bar hopper - only problem, they're a cop magnet, so I'd be busted after my first bar. Aside from that, I'm running out of bikes. Jeez, maybe I could cobble up something out of the bike your wheels came off of...
Enjoying the build.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 12 2010 - I love the smell of metal filings in the morning!

I know, what is up with Yamaha wheel decisions? trying to find an XS 18" rear mag was so hard I finally found one off an sr, (I think, I know its a yam 18" rear) but had to convert the bearings and spacers from 17mm to 20mm PIA!! Goddamn specials and that stupid, low slung cruiser thing.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 12 2010 - I love the smell of metal filings in the morning!

So here's the latest....

I'm waiting to hear from someone who apparently has a few TT front hubs (tracker spool hubs with provision for mounting brake rotor). New ones are $200 a pop, so I'm hoping for somewhat less than that ;)

In the meantime, I've taken the rear wheel apart - so far no surprises here :D Just some really snappy spokes. A good number of them decided it was easier to snap than to let me back off the nipples. Have my samples to send in to Buchanan's once I get the front sorted.

Rim is a WM6 from what I can tell - ~3.5 inches (3.6 to be exact) measured across the widest part of the rim.

Also picked up a nice old set of bars for the project. Not aluminum but not very heavy either.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 12 2010 - I love the smell of metal filings in the morning!

Now I need to source some Dunlop K180F tires. Not so easy as it turns out.

Try Competition Tire Canada 905 684 7418

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 12 2010 - I love the smell of metal filings in the morning!

bolt cutters is the easiest/fastest way to remove old spokes! as long as your throwing them out that is. :p

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 12 2010 - I love the smell of metal filings in the morning!

Yeah - I've used cutters in the past but I only have small ones (insert joke).

I'll be calling Comp Tire Canada tomorrow - found their info in the Dunlop dealer area after much searching.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 12 2010 - I love the smell of metal filings in the morning!

Tim,
Regarding your back rim, the stamping 2750 - 19 on it probably indicates that the bead-to-bead (inside rim width) is 2.75 or 2-3/4 inches...
Pat

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 12 2010 - I love the smell of metal filings in the morning!

Ahhh... makes more sense of course to measure inside, given the differences in rim designs, wall thicknesses etc.

So at 2.75" this would be a WM4.5 according to current Buchanan specs for their Sun rims. Makes much more sense given the WM4 being the max rim size allowed in AHRMA racing for the class the SR500 would fit into.

Great - I'll be AHRMA legal - let's go racing! Any classes for 2-up racing? Would be fun.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 12 2010 - I love the smell of metal filings in the morning!

Just yakked with Comp Tire.

Looks like the tires go back and forth on branding and are now Goodyear branded vs Dunlop (same tires). $160 per tire, and not DOT approved....

Gonna give this some thought. I might end up running dual-sport tires like Michelin Anakee or something. Less money and likely way better on concrete.

Nope, from old Europe...

Seems SRs are popular in the U.S. but quite rare...
Here in Germany over 30,000 were sold, 90% with wire wheels.
Perhaps you try german ebay?

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 12 2010 - I love the smell of metal filings in the morning!

Tim,
The Dunlop K180's are DOT approved (check the Dunlop website). If there's been some sort of Gypsy switch between Dunlop and Goodyear and they've decided to drop the DOT approval well, there's going to be a lot of pissed off street riders. Talk to the tire guys again and tell them to look for a Dunlop K180, 110/80 - 19 P/N TK1801108019. There is a Harley part number for them as well, but I don't have it - you may have to take the plunge and talk to a HD dealer.
K180's are in chronically short supply. I was going to get mine when I was in the US, but my project tanked, so...
Duro has a clone of the Pirelli MT53 in 4:00 X19. DOT approved. $88.00 each on ebay plus $55.00 shipping - though the seller says he'll combine shipments so you might get the pair shipped for $75.00. The front wheel you bought from me had an MT53 on it and my spare wheel has one on it as well... my Starracer has DTII's, which are the grandfather of the K180's.
You might try Glen at FS Motorcycles to see if he can get Duros. I have no idea how they stick, but they do "look the part". They're a tall tire, though, almost 100% aspect ratio...
Believe it or not, Dunlop K70's were a popular dirt track tire in the early '70's, but it looks like the 4:00X19's have been discontinued. Unfortunate - it was a decent tire back in the day. Chen Shin or somebody was doing K70 knock-offs but I have no idea on the available sizes.
If you have to run different makes of front and back tires, don't sweat it - it was pretty common "back in the day" (think about the wheels you got from me) - maybe even today as well, just haven't been to a dirt track in years....
Keep having fun.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 12 2010 - I love the smell of metal filings in the morning!

The folks at Competition Tire are I think talking about the DT-II which seems to alternate between being branded Goodyear and Dunlop. Either way not DOT, which I'd like if possible to at least maintain some confidence that my insurance might cover my arse.

K180's seem to be either done or in very short supply, and not in a rear 19 in any case. We'll keep on hunting and see what happens. I'm a long way from needing rubber anyhow.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 12 2010 - I love the smell of metal filings in the morning!

So after much looking, it would seem that even if I could find DOT Dunlop K180's, they're only in an 18 rear, so no good for me anyhow. Great if you're running stock SR rims, but not for 19's front and rear.

The DTII is the tire that has been branded Goodyear in the past, but has for many years been made by Dunlop. The ones Comp Tire have are branded Goodyear, but bottom line, they're DTII's. ~$155 each + $15 shipping + $10 or whatever enviro-tax + taxes so I'm looking at around $400 for the rubber, un-mounted. While the price isn't a shock, I have to decide if it's worth spending $400 on rubber that looks awesome but isn't DOT and certainly won't last as long as a pavement tire.

Alternatively though, I'm stuck with minimal selection in 19" rears. Nothing much out there wider than a 110, which while it would be same as stock width for the SR, it's a darn narrow tire (maybe too narrow) for the WM4.5 rim.

Still deliberating. At the end of the day if I have to run the Goodyears, well, then that's what I'll do and we'll see how they last on the streets of Toronto ;)

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 12 2010 - I love the smell of metal filings in the morning!

And just so I don't forget...

Avon AM9 Universals are available in 4.1 inch width x 19 inch rims - good front and rear with rim width acceptable range from 1.85 - 3.00 which is good for my 1.85 WM2 front and 2.75 WM4.5 rear.

Sooo.... worst case scenario at least I know there are Avon's out there to fit these rims. Finding a DOT rear street tire to fit a 19" WM4.5 rim is difficult.

Looking like Maxxis DTR-1's might be the choice though - they come in a hard compound and have gotten good reviews from super-moto types running them on pavement.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 12 2010 - I love the smell of metal filings in the morning!

Bottom line Tim, where are you going to spend most of your time riding this? buy the right tires for that use unless you are building a show piece.
