Tim's SR500

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 12 2010 - I love the smell of metal filings in the morning!

On the continuing saga of the K180's, a perusal of the 2011 Screamin' Eagle Catalogue (at least the one we get in Canada) there is NO listing for the K180's in either size.
Well, I'll be jigswiggered.
The Maxxis seem to be a pretty good tire... aside from certification issues.

Throwing some other options out there, I've used Pirelli MT21's on my XR600R and am more than happy with them as an offroad tyre and they hold the road OK as well - I'm currently running on as a front on my XR. Pretty sure they're DOT approved, and come in at about $120 for a rear. Good fun on grass, dirt & sand and hold the road quite well. Allows for controlled powerslides if you're banked over and giving it hard throttle, too. Big, big fun.

The thing I'm running on the back of my bike at the moment is a Dunlop K750. Gnarly dual-sport with heaps of tarmac grip and a chunky 'honeycomb' kind of tread pattern. have yet to test it properly offroad but it seems ok on grass and gravel. Comes in at around $100 for a rear and I reckon thats pretty darn good value.

Hope that helps.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 12 2010 - I love the smell of metal filings in the morning!

Yeah - need 19 inch rear though. There are street options out there, but I'm probably gonna plunk down and order the Goodyear DTII's. I can go with old Firestones, modern Dunlops, Avon's.... lots of options.

The MT21 is only available in a 21 front, but I could run the 19 rear on both ends. We'll see what happens - need spokes first ;)

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 12 2010 - I love the smell of metal filings in the morning!

Tire decisions, decisions, I think I'm done.

So....

Dunlop DOT K180's are gone gone gone gone and weren't ever available in a 19" rear to begin with, or at least nobody has ever found one.

Maxxis DTR-1 are nice and all, but not readily available and non-DOT of course

Goodyear DTII are readily available, and would run right about $400 to my door for the pair (not installed). Non-DOT and MASSIVE - like 5" wide installed on a WM2 front rim, which leaves about 1/8" or so if I'm lucky on either side.

If I was building an honest-to-goodness 'dirt tracker' for the street (i.e. making a race bike, then making it streetable with lights and brakes) I'd go Goodyear. But, that was never the plan. Go back to my inspiration posts for the plan.

Duro makes a nice Pirelli MT53 replica - the HF 308 which is available in 4.00 x 19" universals at $70 each. Good price, and they'd fit the tracker bill considering the MT53 was also a choice racing tire back in the 70's, when my SR was in production.

But... again, I'm not making a race bike or a replica of a race bike.

So.... I may choose the Shinko 705. It's a dual sport tire with a modern aggressive tread, along the lines of the Michelin Anakee and other dual-sport tires. Available in a 4.10 x 19" universal for $70 in a radial! Bias Ply are $45, but everybody is jumping on the radial which was just released this year.

From BikeBandit it's $197 landed at my door for the pair. I think I have a winner.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 12 2010 - I love the smell of metal filings in the morning!

The tires are getting loads of great reviews on ADVRider etc. Some people experienced some block cracking on the bias ply, but Shinko was replacing all of them and the radial is apparently the better tire.

People reporting getting 1000's of miles out of them too, which is nice to hear considering at some point I'm planning on riding this bike.

Similar tires on another of my inspiration bikes from Deus:

And there's even a pic of Noel riding it:

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 18 2010 - Hmmmmm..... which rubber to use.

BAHAHAHAAHAH!! that is a low blow my friend!

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 18 2010 - Hmmmmm..... which rubber to use.

Well that's f'n good enough for me. Will order them up tomorrow. You riding the bias (I'm guessing based on the mileage) or radial? The radials are only an extra $60 for the pair all-in so it seems like a no-brainer.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 18 2010 - Hmmmmm..... which rubber to use.

I run the 244 in the summer, the 705 in the winter and on tours.

that 705 is a pretty damned good sticking tire too, my buddy thought i was low siding...and I was just dragging peg instead lol

I'm not sure what they are the front is a tubeless, the rear is a tube tire, about ready to spoon them back on for the winter!!

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 18 2010 - Hmmmmm..... which rubber to use.

If you want to borrow my tire cutting tool (left over from the dirt track days) to cut those big blocks into something more "dirt tracky", let me know. Suggest you practice on a used tire first. Also smells when you do it - in the pits before a race is okay, outside the shop with a beer is optimum.

How about none of the above? K70's all day:

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 18 2010 - Hmmmmm..... which rubber to use.

Think I'm going with the Shinko's. It's either the Shinko 707's or the Duro HF 308 Pirelli copies.

Like I say, from the start I was thinking about a more modern dual-purpose tire like the Anakee etc. and now that I've found a tire that gets rave reviews from guys riding BMW GS's etc. and is cheap to boot, well I'm sold.

Found them for $55 each locally :) So $125 taxes-in.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 18 2010 - Hmmmmm..... which rubber to use.

and that my friend is why I have shinkos on both of my bikes....and will have shinkos on the 550 when I have to replace

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 18 2010 - Hmmmmm..... which rubber to use.

Frakkers - no Shinko 705's in Canada, and BikeBandit won't ship tires to Canada.

I might be making a trip to the UPS store in Buffalo, or will find some enterprising US dealer who wants my $.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 18 2010 - Hmmmmm..... which rubber to use.

if I were closer you could ship em here, but I am 4 hours away

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 18 2010 - Hmmmmm..... which rubber to use.

Shipping to Buffalo is easy - can have them shipped to the UPS store there. They charge $10 admin fee + $1 / day for the service. I just show up and pick up the parcel. Doesn't even have to have been shipped by UPS in the first place.

But now I'm hearing that contrary to BikeBandit's classification, the tires may in fact not be 'universal'. Other sellers also classify them as universal, good for front or rear, so I'm waiting to hear from Shinko.

HF 308's may be in my future after all.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 18 2010 - Hmmmmm..... which rubber to use.

whats the difference? KLR guys run rears in teh front a ton when to go to FFT (fat front tires)

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 18 2010 - Hmmmmm..... which rubber to use.

Yeah, I was thinking that must be the case. Probably no difference that would cause any problems in my life. :)

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 18 2010 - Hmmmmm..... which rubber to use.

Sheeeeeeesh.

Got an email back from Shinko - the 19" is considered a front-only tire and they don't recommend it on the rear.

Just got off the phone with Kenda - their K761 is a true universal front/rear tire and looks good, but is narrower by a good 1/2 inch. Only comes in a 100/90-19.

Still pondering. Gotta focus on getting spokes.
