Tim's SR500

Frakkers - no Shinko 705's in Canada, and BikeBandit won't ship tires to Canada.

I might be making a trip to the UPS store in Buffalo, or will find some enterprising US dealer who wants my $.

Cedar rapids tires has them for under $50 each.

I think I may return my Kenda 761's and go with these as well.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 18 2010 - Hmmmmm..... which rubber to use.

Here's the rub.

From what I can gather, the bias-ply version of the 705 is a universal front/rear design, which makes sense. Most of the universal tires I've seen are bias (including my Avon Roadriders).

However, the bias-ply tires have suffered from delamination, tread cracks etc. and Shinko's website now lists the Radial version of the 17 and 19 tires as Rear and Front specific, respectively.

So.... while I could buy two 19" Shinko 705 bias-ply tires for $50 each in the US and somehow get them here, and safely run them front and rear, they'd likely be the last set I ever buy as I think the bias-ply versions are going away with the radials being introduced.

I'm looking at the Kenda 761 as an alternative as it's confirmed (called Kenda) as a universal fit tire. They get similarly good reviews and look good too - any reason you'd return them?

looks like i need to buy tires now then!!!!

I love my 705's :)

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 18 2010 - Hmmmmm..... which rubber to use.

Well, Tim, Thanks for doing all the leg work for me! I was thinking I'd save a few beans but with return shipping it'd be not so much. When you say "Universal fit" you mean front and rear, correct?

Funny, Bikebandit doesn't list an 18" radial.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 18 2010 - Hmmmmm..... which rubber to use.

No - 19" radial front, 17 radial rear.

I emailed Scott at Shinko again to reconfirm. It's likely the bias-ply is universal, like all the other size bias-ply 705's and it's just the radials that are engineered to rotate in a specific direction (the treads have to be reversed front vs back so when you're using a universal tire you flip them around).

I still may end up with the Kenda's simply because the bias-ply's aren't available anywhere in Canada according to the local dealers, and it's not worth driving to Buffalo. The Kenda 761 looks almost the same and will ultimately be the same price.

How sweet is this Gravel Crew bike. Makes me wanna gut my RD60 tank, slam the bike 4 inches and put clipons on it instead. Been staring at this bike for a couple years now I think.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 18 2010 - Hmmmmm..... which rubber to use.

Cool looking for sure! I love the seat! I'm really over the firestone Champs though. SO done to death it seems. standard peg position on that bike would be pretty uncomfortable with down bars too me thinks. a case of function follows form here maybe. it is striking though. didn't mean to tear it apart, just a couple things I've been thinking about recently pertaining to my own build(s)

I went with the Kenda because of the good reviews and I thought they split the modern vs. vintage look difference nicely. I really like the look of the Shinkos a tad more and the price (either radial or bias ply) and reviews are great. But maybe I'll try those on another build down the line. something smaller. more like that Deuce bike you posted with Noel riding it. ::)

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 18 2010 - Hmmmmm..... which rubber to use.

WHat size are your Kenda's? Any pics? Would love to know what they actually measure across. The Shinko's are a 110. I'm hoping the Kenda's run maybe a little wider than specs suggest, as I have a lot of rear rim to fill.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 18 2010 - Hmmmmm..... which rubber to use.

Tires are at the shop kind of burried in the recent expansion. I can send measures when I dig them out to mount them. I believe they are 110 front and 120 rear but it might be a 100 front. they are a little taller, 90's I believe, than I was looking for which is another thing I like about the Shinkos, the 80 profile.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 18 2010 - Hmmmmm..... which rubber to use.

Alrighty! Ordered my tires from Gnarly Parts in BC.

One of the only places in Canada I think to have the Shinko 705's in bias ply in stock (coming in tomorrow so cross fingers). $62 each and free shipping on orders $150+. Added in the inner tubes and rim strips and it came to $183, including $21 in taxes which I'm not 100% sure I should be paying, but with HST nowadays in Canada, I think the tax-free mail order days between provinces are over.

For $62 each, I'm happy to give them a shot. If I don't like em, no biggie.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 23 2010 - Shinko 705's on the way from BC - waiting on parts..

So now I'm waiting on my 1976 KH500 front hub to arrive, so I can confirm dimensions and order my Buchanan spokes.

Paul's bending some tubing for my rear frame loop, and I'm test fitting a few different gas tanks. Have a couple of winners I think and I'll hopefully keep it so I can mount the stock tank when I feel like it for extended range (the new tanks are kinda puny - 1-2 gallons tops).

Hopefully it will start coming together more quickly in the next couple of weeks.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 23 2010 - Shinko 705's on the way from BC - waiting on parts..

What diameters of tubing and centerline radii can Paul bend? I have a contact out in Brussels ON who bends 1" and larger but I'm looking for someone who can do smaller diameters and radii - and maybe a bit closer as well. Let me know.
Thanks,
Pat Cowan.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 23 2010 - Shinko 705's on the way from BC - waiting on parts..

Paul's bending the smaller frame tubing - 1/2" ID stuff I think. He also bends larger tubing for exhaust headers, so I think he does it all.

"Landing somewhere between these two" would be what I call the sweet spot... I think you have a solid direction, looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Tim,
Do you have a contact # or email or something for Paul, so I can talk to him about bending some tubes?
Thanks,
Pat Cowan.

I really like the first inspiration photo. I like the tank, and the seat. That seat really works well with the frame. I also like how low that tank is on the frame. Definitely gonna save that one.
