Tom's BMW R80. Straight from Munich. -- FINNISHED --

Hey everyone,

I'm Tom from Munich and I’ve been lurking around the forums for quite some time now but never got around checking in with my build.
So here it is, all the way from last winter up to now.

I started building this bike at the age of 17. Then took a break, came back to it and so on…

It started off as an ugly RT version:

IMG_3595.jpg

Everything unnecessary ripped off of it:

Back then I didn’t have my own garage or workspace, so I put it in the basement. Little did I know that it won’t get out of there for an entire year.

A couple of new parts came in of which some were modified.

Next up was getting rid of anything above the upper triple clamp.

IMG_41222B252812529_zpsad30a460.jpg

That was when I realized, the lower triple had a crack. I ordered a new one and was now waiting for new parts to arrive.

In the meantime I sandblasted and powdercoated my rims, put in new SKF bearings and got a set of fresh rubber.

Next up was the front fender, which I fabricated from scratch.

IMG_4812.jpg

I had a guy I know fabricate a bracket for the original instruments, which turned out pretty nice. Also, I received my stainless steel braided brake hoses with gold fittings.

With the lower clip on bars, all the cables were too long. Especially the clutch bowden cable was a big problem. So I bought a new, shorter one from a /5 BMW. On a lathe I fabricated an adapter piece so it would fit my newer clutch lever.

I've got way more to come! I'll upload the rest later tonight
Stay tuned.

Re: Tom's BMW R80. Straight outta Munich, Germany.

That's pretty damn' cool Tom .....................errrr - shorten rear seat loop ????

Re: Tom's BMW R80. Straight outta Munich, Germany.

On my to-do list:

Remove or replace stock gauges
Cut off rear hoop- only problem is I use it to pull the beast back onto center stand
Redo front brake lines
Do the wheels black . . . not sure yet on this one as the original silver is in good shape
Replace front fender- found a little alloy mini fender at a swap, might use it

Not trying to thread jack, just don't see many R80RTs used as a café platform . . . ;D

Re: Tom's BMW R80. Straight outta Munich, Germany.

Also, regarding the hoop- I was going to do a rear fender and tail light/plate bracket up there, but went to a rear axle mount instead- just couldn't bring myself to cut it off just yet. Plus a few other projects got in the way . . .

Re: Tom's BMW R80. Straight outta Munich, Germany.

Keep the hoop! It looks cool, and I would keep the wheels silver. Don't overdo it.

Re: Tom's BMW R80. Straight outta Munich, Germany.

great bike tom hopefully this winter will be the one that gets her going

I know everything is preference, but that bike is almost finished to me. Back hoop, all good.... Front fender, Awesome... Silver wheels, Perfect. Rear fender and light, pretty well buttoned up. Amazing looking bike.

Re: Tom's BMW R80. Straight outta Munich, Germany.

Thanks- OK, hoop stays for now.

Tom- check out BoxerMetal.com- he has some nice bits for the R80 including top-notch rearsets . . . fwiw

Bike looks great, would love to see more pics.

Thanks man! I'm actually looking for rearsets right now but I don't feel like paying 400€ for them. There must be an easier and cheaper way to do it. Maybe I can find a used set somewhere.
And great looking bike you got there!

Alright here it goes with part two of my build. This is around December 2012.

I made a template for the electronics box, which I wanted to place under the seat. In there is the battery, the ECU, ignition and the random electronics stuff like the fuse box etc.

kohkood2B994.jpg

In its final form I saved about 10lbs with this option compared to the standard setup.

Next up was the new lower triple clamp, which finally arrived. So I tore everything apart and put it back together!

IMG_5390_zpsb612ebc5.jpg

Here you can see how flush the fender sits on top of the wheel.

IMG_5395_zps60709e71.jpg

Now that I was done with the front of the bike, I continued with the back.

First of all the subframe was shortened by 2 inches:

IMG_4224.jpg

Then I got rid of all useless brackets, seat locks and so on. I welded in 3 new braces to hold my future seat in place and bent the frame upwards to the point where it would follow the lines of the gastank.

Here is the seatpan made out of 2mm aluminum.

IMG_4859.jpg

Coming up is part 3 with the new seat and a test fit of all the parts so far!

Hope you like it so far!

Re: Tom's BMW R80. Straight outta Munich, Germany.

very nice, like it a lot...

rearsets you say?

mine are Yamaha R6 5eb model...

i bolted them inside the metal rear peg mounts with a bit of modification and used the r6 gear linkage and brake rod..

i had bolted them on the outside of peg mounts originally but they were too far out of line...and riding position is better with them tucked in

gear changes are smooth..brake pedal has good feel

riding position looks and feels good and with my ironing board seat and clip ons can slide around on it nicely for over shoulder looks etc.... 8)

Re: Tom's BMW R80. Straight outta Munich, Germany.

just to add, so as not to cause any confusion...

the r6 pegs were swapped for fazer fz1 pegs cos they look more "cafe racer" whereas the r6 ones look like pure sportbike items so therefore out of place..

Re: Tom's BMW R80. Straight outta Munich, Germany.

Thanks for the input everyone!

The story goes on:

After finishing the rear frame and seatpan I had a leather seat made by the local upholstery shop.

IMG_5807.jpg

A friend of mine did this with a sharpie on the gastank just to make it look a little interesting.

And this was the bike midway through its first build:

Thanks for watching, there's more to come!

Re: Tom's BMW R80. Straight outta Munich, Germany.

Good looking build.
Looks like your friend is pretty good with a sharpie.

Re: Tom's BMW R80. Straight outta Munich, Germany.

Now THAT seat / hoop is as sweet as the rest of the bike !!! Good job.

BTW - if you are up in the Reichenau [ ot Haselbatchtal ] area next Summer we have a Pig Roast / BBQ for our German biker friends. Usually the last week in August. Plenty of accomodation.

Located just NE of Dresden between Pulsnitz and Konigsbruck

Re: Tom's BMW R80. Straight outta Munich, Germany.

looks great tom. Sometimes it really doesn't take much to make a bike look really great. Take off some parts put on a few and voila you got yourself a sweet little ride.

Re: Tom's BMW R80. Straight outta Munich, Germany.

Hey DoTheTon,

sorry for the lack of updates on the BMW. Just a quick series of pictures what the bike looked like finished last summer.
Let me know what you all think!

If you got any questions go ahead and ask.

This is the "Version 1" of the R80 as I like to call it. Right now it is in the process of being rebuild again, but this time a little more radical.
Stay tuned for pictures of its current state!

Thanks for for all your input.

Re: Tom's BMW R80. Straight outta Munich, Germany.

So the BMW has been taken apart AGAIN!

Since me and a friend got a little more serious about customizing motorcycles, we moved into a bigger shop with a work area suited for working on 2-3 motorcycles simultaniously.

Back to the Beemer:
The entire thing is in the process of being rebuild.

The pictures start wirh a mock-up and then continue to go more into detail.

What will be done:
- mismatched wheels (spokes up front, alloys in the back)
- dropped forks about 2.75 inches
- lifted tank
- asymmetrical rear frame completely from scratch
- new seat
- cleaned main frame
- battery/electrics below the gearbox
- rearsets
- new brake system, throttle grip, etc.
- CNC-machined upper tripple
- new exhaust system
- all kinds of visual things like new headlight, indicators, tach, and so on
- ...and a bunch of small things not even worth listing

Here we go, picture time:
