Hey man I dig your build and really like the way the colors are coming together. That said whats the story with the red on the carbs and filters? It looks like a lighter red. Is it the same paint but just lighter because of the material its on? Maybe just the lighting in the picture? I don't mean to pick, it just stood out a bit to me.
Good eye Scarlson. The red on the carbs is a different paint due to fuel soak. I wasn't sure if the Metalcast red would hold up to fuel, so I hit the carbs with ceramic engine paint, and the color is about 5 shades lighter than the rest of the red on the engine. Now that I know that the Metalcast will hold up to fuel, (don't ask, it involves a leaking fuel line and a puddle...) the plan is to repaint after the GTG and some summer riding, I'll pull the carbs and redo the paint on them (and the front calipers) in the same red as the engine covers.
Waiting on new chain and I have to make a rear brake linkage at work, after that, it's assembling the last few things and double checking all the bolts and some cosmetic work on the tank and new padding in the seat and I'll be riding!
Tank is painted, seat is painted, fender is painted, brake stay is one, rear lights are hooked up and working and everything is pretty much ready to go. Still waiting on the chain, but other than that she's ready to ride. FTMFW
Well, I got bored after dinner, so I decided to go ahead and do some pin-striping on the tank to distract from the absolutely horrible job I did patching up the dents. I think it came out pretty good, very 1970's, and it matches the original paint colors.
hope you got er dialed in...its a long ass ride from fl to tn, I dont wanna have to go the opposite direction to come get your broken down ass on teh side of the highway somewhere in georgia.
Got her on the road, put about 30 miles down today, bout 8-10 highway with "appropriate speeds" : and some backroads as well. She bounces a bit in the front, gonna have to get the tires re-beaded more evenly, but she purrs and runs like a scalded dog. Very happy with my choice of the 17/40 gearing, as I was only running 4k rpms at 55mph, and 5k rpms at 70, but still has the umph to pull out of corners and slam me back into the too short seat, I'll be addressing that soon too. Once the weekend comes and I can convince my wife's friend to ride with her, maybe I can get them to get some video of it running.
Well, I rode to work today, ran great the whole way, aside from the annoying front end bounce (which will get corrected this weekend). On the way home, going around a wide sweeping right hand curve, I heard something rather odd, then all the sudden, it sounded like I dropped 2 cylinders and the bike instantly doubled in sound, but dropped power. WTF! I thought... Got to a red light about 1/4 mile away and looked down to see bare pipe ending where the muffler should have been. Damn. Well, long story short, got home, went to dinner, then the wife drove us over to where the muffler "may" have come off. Searched for about 10 minutes and saw it laying up against the curb on the expressway. She parked nearby and I ran to see if maybe it got spared the ultimate death:
It didn't...
So now I'm out a muffler. I may be able to salvage the inner piping and use it for baffling inside the extension pipe that was between this and the header, not sure yet. But lesson of the day gents: Check your exhaust clamps. I thought mine were tight, obviously not tight enough!
So you (obviously) didn't have the muffler mounted anywhere other than at the collector? It probably would have fallen off eventually regardless of how tight the clamp was.
