There seem to be more and more folk attracted to the XV / TR1 range and it's amazing to see the many varied finished bikes ! All styles seem to be suitable for the big Vee.
Me I'm anchored [ blinkered ? ] to the early Sixties styling - so it has to be wire spoked alloy rims for me.
There's several over on the ViragoTech forum which are going to be sensational.
How about the TR1 / XV for the new XS650 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm just glad I got in early and secured a few donors before the premium started to hit.
I hope to get myself off to Holland soon as I've located 4 at very good prices.
Wynand - it seems that for the past 10 [?] years the Yam XS650 has been the donor of choice for Cafe Racer projects - and some of them very nice too. But for "big lads" like me, 500cc is a bit on the tiny side! So, just my view, but the XV /TR1 seems to be making a bit of a takeover.
Are you in Holland? I'm threatening to catch up with a few biker cousins already when I'm out there!
There seems to be a good supply of used [ and abused ] stuff in Holland - about half the price of equivlent parts / bikes in the UK.
here's a pic of the Cafe Racer in the very early mock up stages [ June 2011 ]. The bottom of the tank has been reshaped [ 25mm removed ] to bring the proportions back, rear swingarm axle mount moved forward by 25mm to shorten wheelbase. But at least you can get an idea about the spoked wheels. These are stock XS650 / 500 - eventually I'll fit WM1 x 2.5" x 18" on the front and WM5 x 3.5" x 18" on the rear.
We've also got a second bike to be fitted up with Grimeca 4LS front brake.
I'll be getting some up to date pix after the October Classic Bike show when we'll be finished with the panic getting the Scorpio Reverse Trike finished.
I saw the Classified Moto bike at Bull City Rumble, i just didn't know what it was at the time. Really gorgeous, even more so now that I know the kind of work that went into it. I have always thought that the Viragos were cool bikes, I'm glad to see that new life is being breathed into them.
Slow progress due to working flat out on the Scorpio Reverse trike - has to be on the stand at the show in 10 days time ......... hahahahahahaha
Anyway, finally made a decision on the hub "colour", Red? Black? Gold? .....so finally decided on highly polished!
Hubs went off today to my local polishing guy.
When I pick the hubs up I'll take in the various engine covers for polishing - tappet, cam, clutch mech and starter motor. That'll be it for the motor [ all Satin Black ] with Gold highlights courtesy of Irridated Gold Passivated cap heads, oil feed pipes and head mount plates.
I'm also having the wheel and swingarm spindles [ axles ] and axle spacers Gold passivated. Think I might also have thebrake torque arm and gearlinkage passivated at the same time.
There'll be a lot of Red to break up !
At least all this can be under way while we're finishing off the Reverse Trike - then it's balls out to try to get the Vindicator finished for next Spring ...........
Sorry to be a complete pleb TJ, but can you put up some more photos or explain further how that rear suspension works. I've bent my brain trying to work it out. I just can't work out how you have transferred the longitudinal movement in to the transverse plane. I can think of other ways, like snail cams etc, but how does this work?
Had a good headsup today from the Viragotech forum.
I was a bit concerned about the way the cam is supported on the chain end. These guys have already been there and done that - there's a simple ballrace bearing interchange that gives the cams an easy life - get rid of that dreaded cam seize up / top end destruction ! All for a few quid.
it's when you see one close up and actually handle them !!!
My pal does have a spare, and I'm trying to justify spending as much on a hub / brake as I have done on the bike !
Having said that, here in the UK the price of 4LS Suzuki units is now as dear as / MORE than a brand new Grimeca ! [ Around £450 ].
Sadly looks like my first pass on this project will go with the twin discs for now. That is until I ride his version with the Grimeca!
Almost how you'd imagine that a Vincent engine might be today if it had survived and evolved!
In the day we always said that Vincent engineering was "a solution looking for a problem" - IOW, seriously over-engineered!
Taking a long hard look at the Yam frame / chassis ...........stick a set of Girdraulics on the front and the Yamaha designers would have got the look just right !
Sold a load of stuff that's been in my garages for 30 odd years - got silly [ good ] money for it and still more to go on E-Bay in the coming weeks.
Then within an hour of selling the stuff I'd bid on - and won - another wire spoked front hub complete with spindle and discs AND a complete Borrani rimmed rear wheel. Both off XS650. The Borrani rear rim is perfect, but "only" 2.5" - perfect for the front of my TR1.
Don't you just love it when a plan comes together?
