Where do you work, what do you do?

I'm what ya would call a starving artist. At least that what i've called my profession till a few years ago. I'm a commercial cabinet maker. I've been working wood since the age of 9. I've also got a college degree from FSU in business and spent 7 1/2 yrs. in the Air Force. I always come back to the wood working business though. At last count, i've got 23 yrs. doing commercial wood work. I've specialized in acrylic solid surfaces and can make most anything with it.

The company i've been with the past few years is a great company. We build and ship worldwide as well as travel to install many of our products. Our biggest account is Victoria's Sceret and they keep up very busy. They aslo give me the most travel time. Next month i'll be in Cali for a week.

Funny, we also build alot of Funeral Home's. Such as casket displays (for Aurora) and full room displays. We just picked up a new account that is building 150 new burger stores of all things. Place called The Counter Burger. If ya get one of these restuarants in your town, we built it. We're there only vendor. Aside from the usual bank builds and department stores most of our jobs are repetative customers and products.

This year has shaped up pretty well. We just recieved our Green certifcation and that in itself has opened many new doors for us. We are the only green certified company within a 800 mile radius.

Here is a small sample of my work..

This is a Hunting bank in Toldeo Ohio

Just a basic bank job, nothing special. The rest of my time is spent in the garage or riding...

How do you feel about the recall?... Local scrap yard has 50 MINT toyota pickups in there now that are usless.

Sad, really. Nice trucks otherwise.
It sucks sorta, I had a super clean looow milage `00 Taco that I had to fail for it`s state inspection because of the rot, and the poor woman was almost in tears because she had JUST made the last payment on it (this was before the recall was announced). For many tho it`s a good thing, super ratted out shite-boxes are getting top book dollar so for the cust it`s usually a good deal, AND they are tossing in another $1000 IIRC if you trade into a new Taco.

Journeyman Tool and Die at a plasic extrusion company called Poly Vinyl Co. Inc.. But I also get to design everything I build. Nice to see it from start to finish. We make profile extrusion for the appliance and furnature/office divider industry mostly. And we have a line of vinyl fencing and railings ( Color Guard).

One item I've worked on is the eraser/marker holder for the Sanford dry erase markers. A co-worker and I designed and built the machine that applies the fuzzy felt and velcro to the bottom.

I had been a machanic before this career but I got sick of fixing other engineers design flaws so I decided I need to make my own flaws, I mean "design features".

I got my bachelors at Kent State in environmental science. Unfortunately, I haven't used it!
I work with my Dad who owns a remodeling business. We do kitchens and baths. I'm mostly
stuck in the shop building cabinets and counter tops. I dislike working for family it can be very
difficult at times! But we run an honest business and only sell great products.

Spent a couple hitches in the USAF, got out to raise a family and return home to Cleveland. Got into manufacturing (what else is there here? at least for now...) So now I'm a Lead Supervisor in automotive manufacturing. We make all of those pulley's etc. on the front accessorie drives for cars. Supply all the big 3 as well as the Japs too. My department is CNC Machining and Spinning (cold forming). It's tough and getting tougher in our industry now. A few years back I actually supervised a couple of the work cells at SuperTrapp. Great fringe bennies, but a bit of a sweat shop.

I thought I'd bump this based on Garagedoreen's post. It also occured to me that alot of these people who posted previously are no longer posting. So what do you do?

I am a tech writer currently freelancing (ie. looking for a job) and do commission fine art on that side.

got discharged off last month, used to work for best buy.
just got my bachelors of fine art in graphic design, hoping to some how get my foot in the door with an internship or a job.

oh, woah is me.

I work as a support representative for a small software company based in Mississauga ON, we develop fleet management software for PACCAR Parts division (Kenworth/Peterbilt). The truck dealerships offer this software to their customers so they can monitor what parts they purchase from their competitors so that they can, in turn, offer lower prices to get their customers to buy parts from them instead of another supplier.

I implement and train new customers, on-site if it's a bigger account, I also provide telephone and email support when necessary.

I am a telecommunications field engineer. All that means is that I am a technician that has been doing it a long time (20+yrs). I started doing telephone work soon after high school. It has transformed into being a gubment contractor doing anything anywhere related to telecommunications.

I love it, but I can't take my bike with me on the road and that sucks.

I am concidering going back to school for a metalurgy degree and use that as a springboard for something of my own. We'll see.

i own a bike shop on harbord st called the bike clinic for the last 4 years. been doing this since 1985. i just sit around talk to customers, answer the phone and collect the $$ till winter. then its a different story!

I like broad range of jobs people have had. Definitely shows you don't have to do the same thing your entire life, not saying it's bad if you do though.

I'm a scorecard/credit analyst for a Dutch owned leasing company. I've been here for a few years since I graduated with a business degree from Penn State. It's an interesting job and is inteand I like working for the Dutch. This time last year I spent some time in our office in the Netherlands and then was able to take vacation to do some backpacking to take full advantage of having a paid plane ticket home.

The next phase is going to be in woodworking which is where my talent is (i think). My grandfather who was a carpenter is my inspiration. The analyst job is just feeding the bank for an extensive trip around the world without flying..

I've done all sorts of things, tool and die, millwright, graphic designer, mechanical designer, etc etc. Currently I work for the city of Toronto, doing next to nothing, it's not in the feild i'd like to be in, but it pays the bills for now.

IFY, the lazy bastards I work with all voted for a strike. So watch for that at the end of june.

i wondered if that bike was owned by a member on here

lets see. i was making concrete countertops until about a month ago. besides that i get paid to surf, design some clothes, and manage a team of younger surfers for a local retailer. i have lots of free time. i get to be creative.

I'm a photography assistant at a automotive photography studio here in Detroit. I do everything research, setting up shots, cleaning cars, building maintenance, getting lunch and anything else that needs to be done. Between everything going to CGI and the big 3 going under I'm not working much. We've been trying to get out of automotive and into film with our camera array. Its been a year of research and development and still more to come but its finally ready to do some really cool stuff if we can find the work in this economy. You can see what we do here www.davo.com and www.midwestmatrix.com i love my job and the people i work with but am looking into going back to school for something else.

I work in plant maintenance in Fontana, Ca. That term encompasses everything from clogged toilets to telephones. In between the BS I make parts for my bikes. I call it "unknown sponsorship".

Ha! I believe that to be the first Kindergarten Cop refrence I've ever seen on dotheton... unless I missed the more common "It's not a tuma" somewhere.
Anyway, I'm an equipment operator with the city of Gulf Shores, Al while going to school at night for civil engineering. Shitty pay and awesome benefits means I'll be here 'till they(the city) hire me for an office position or until all my kids are grown and gone! Hopefully the former rather than the latter. I also install tile in the evenings and weekends. Before I came to the city I owned and operated a flooring company. When I'm not working for the city, installing tile, or going to class I watch my children while my wife runs her cleaning business. When I'm not doing all of that, I'm wrenching on my bike. When I'm not doing that, I'm sleeping!

I've been the Technical Director at a performing arts high school for almost 20 years. Got 5 years untill I can retire, I'm so tired of willful children, arrogant parents, and high pitched voices! Before that a stagehand and before that I worked for 8years as a road hand, 4 years as a lighting tech in Rock and Roll and 4 years as a master stage carpenter with "legit" shows. Been a member of the stagehands Union, the IATSE, for about 30 years.
