XS850 - Monoshock & USD Fork (pics pg 13)

Troybilt and I fought with the carbs that ended up on Willow for days and nothing we did worked. Came down to pits in the carb body. Kiley brought a new one and finally the bike ran right.

For sure man. Wasn't calling you out for calling me a quitter. haha. Was just emphasizing the fact that this is the first time I've been defeated by a set of carbs in a long time. Especially after building an 850 last year with the Mikuni's which required almost zero turning work at all after the fact.

:) I just wanted to be clear and let you know that it's not your fault. It's the carbs. haha. Hopefully it's the same as what Maritime said and you just toss a different set on and BAM! She goes like hell!

These would probably do just that.. ;)

Haha... are you being paid by Triumph or something? ;)

I found a guy close with a rack of 750 carbs he said I could borrow to test out. Really just interested to see what happens if I just slap them on before splurging for a new rack. However that set Datadavid looks like a pretty good deal, so I'll keep an eye on them.

Hey, thats me!

There are a handful of us triple guys around...
I've got three... and I might beat you to those carbs.

Haha hey there. Well there's no reserve on it, and won't benefit either of us to run the bid up on each other. If you want them, go for it. I don't want to commit anyway until I know the results after trying your MK2's out.

Haha noo, you might just think so but..
Spent a year fiddling on the mik's on the 750, they were really hard to dial in, and the synch would only last like 250km tops, then the synch screws would rattle loose from the fine triple buzz even if i loctited them.. so even if i could make them run perfect they were a pita to lice with (unless you just love carb syncing..)
A newer set of carbs is just easier to live with and luckily triumph produced a good many engines with correct intake spacing not very long ago!

Yeah... I totally get it. Makes sense :)

Just a little update for those who might be curious...

I've decided to NOT try the 750 carbs that I borrowed as they will just take too much work for a rack of carbs that I don't want to use in the end. I'm going to wait until the spring and probably just spring for 3 Mikuni VM's.

That being said... here's a twist to the story...

I'm hesitant to even post this because I'm concerned over what it means for me, but I changed the oil in her last night to get her ready for the winter. This can't be good... Only 1 qt of oil in the bike out of the 3 qt's that I put in early in the summer. Probably only rode it a total of 200 miles at the most while attempting to tune it.

Since I tested compression and had good numbers, this is weird to me. Typically you'd jump to rings or valves right? But both of those would be giving me bad compression. No?

Any thoughts on diagnosing would be appreciated.

It would be smoking something fierce if that was the case. Probably youve been running so rich bores have been flushing oil out while tuning. Mine has been drinking a bit while setting the rings, stopped now i think..

First of all check your oil more often.

Oil consumption with no loss of compression quite often leads to valve guide seal replacement. Datadavid is correct though, there would be a lot of smoke.

Break in alone did NOT consume 2 quarts of oil. If it did you have problems.

It definitely wasn't smoking. So nothing to be overly concerned about until I get it running tuned properly?

I wouldnt worry too much unless it happens again.

Maybe you put one quart in and forgot the other 2

Alright. I'll keep a closer eye on it next spring when I start tuning again.

Oh and hey Dave, if you see any of those Triumph carbs pop-up on eBay let me know. I know you're always keeping an eye out for that kinda thing :)

Hey! I linked you two good sets already! :D

I missed out on the auction set, and the other set was buy it now for over $300. If I'm going to spend that kinda money, don't you think I'd be better off with 3 brand new VM34's or VM32's?

Yea, though if i would buy these in sweden it would be helluva lot more expensive, plus there would have to be some kind of linkage made with proper adjustments for syncing the throttles i guess?

An adjustable 1 into 3 throttle cable I believe. Assuming this guy is still around, I might just grab this kit. It's $312 and comes with everything: http://www.spec2.com/xscarbs.html

As seen here: http://www.yamaha-triples.org/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=23206&DisplayType=flat&setCookie=1

Buy these: set the needles deep and save the extra one for parts
