I totally agree. I searched high and low for a tank that was more fitting to this bike. I was never crazy about the teardrop shapes of the 70's. Anyway, I liked the color and graphics of this tank so much, I think I'm going to recreate it. The outside of the tank only has a couple of dings. The inside is pretty crusty. I'll have to make new mounting ears and find a suitable gas cap. OEM caps are going for $50 + on ebay. Yikes! I only paid $73 for the tank and shipping.
here's a close [ but no cigar ] attempt - Docs I believe?
Not sure WHY you'd want to throw away the TR1's virtual Vincent copy rear swing arm ass'y and fit twinshox [ ??? ]
Engine should be Gloss Black and siamese the pipes - as the mock up with my Vindicator. I like Doc's work, but this one is missing the point. You can even buy Indian copy Vincent tanks ! It would have to be chain drive.
Originally we were building such an Homage for my pal Adrian at RAM, but he's become so busy with the Jag C Type replicas - it's had to be shelved.
I had a GOOD look at Vincent Girdraulics at the classic Bike show last weekend - pretty simple as the main fork blades are alloy. Don't even think about originals - £1000 [ $1600 US ] for a set needing reconditioning !
My Cafe Creme project [ "Specials" thread ] is a 1920's influenced Boardtracker using a "spare" TR1 donor. It will have a completely new [ Willow style ] frame and I'm seriously looking at Vincent forks [ or a damn good copy of ! ]
ANY self respecting Vinnie Homage should have one of these ........Vincent £800 Modified Jaguar....£100
That's 5" speedo BTW
And here's forks attached to £40,000's worth [ ? ] of Vincent
I have to say the tank is a real nice shape, I had the tear drop xs se tank on mine but loved the square xs tank, I also put about 4" in to it so its now longer an thinner , works great round your knee
A really beat up0 xs400 tank I found on ebay. The basic shape is the same, only wider. After I cut it up last night, I noticed it may be too tall. Shame, cause I was planning on using the lip left after the tunnel was cut out as a mounting point for the future seat pan. I like the tunnel/cutout area for placement of a tail light, or I may just leave it and mount the tail light above the cutout area.
Amazing work going on here. I cant wait to see what you do for a seat/uppersubframe (?) to hold you up. I cant get the picture of that white radical ducati out of my head looking at this.
Inspired for my next build for sure! the small bike is fun but next one is at least a 750!
I never realized the potential these had! Looking great! I guess if i ever stumble across a Virago for a song and dance i'll hafta pick it up! Cant wait to see the finished product!
Sort of. I scored an almost new set of Kerkers on ebay just for this bike. I thought about using just one, or both in the stacked configuration, or even as a twin undertail.
Had a little me time tonight. I hate short days. Sundays suck because it means I have to go to my regular job Monday.
Working on fitting the tank and to see if a raked angle would look better than level. Also trimmed down the seat cowl as it sat too high (middle pic).
Thanks! I had to cut down the cowl a bit. There will be a subframe fabbed up as well. I was gonna go with the seat and tank level and make the bike look long and low, but the sport bike rider in me spoke louder. I think the most difficult part of this project will be the exhaust. But, I will cross that bridge when I get to it. Ha!
I gotta see how those Kerkers are going to fit in that package. That seat tank in one line at an aggressive angle begs for underseat exhausts like a 996 or B-King or ZX10R.
