Re: Yamaha XS850 Cafe Project "SHAFTY"

The work you are doing is fantastic. Should be a torque monster!

Re: Yamaha XS850 Cafe Project "SHAFTY"

after a liberal dose of alcohol last night, i woke up this morning feeling great.

so took the cams out, cut the cam chain with my dremel and took the head and barrels off the engine.

Re: Yamaha XS850 Cafe Project "SHAFTY"

front inner tube turned up today so can now put that in, and new rear brake line from hel turned up, have a chap in america making me some black stainless braided hoses to get rid of the splitter as i cant find any that run direct from the master cylinder to the calipers.

have this chap designing and building me a new cam chain tensioner as the old one is well past its best.

thats about it folks, waiting to get paid on the 25th then i can order some more parts!

well after a lot of homework and phone calls looks like its has the henry abe big bore kit fitted in the past, doesnt look like it was done that long ago either.judging by the state of the bore etc.had to change the name to xs900 now lol

It's official...you suck! ;D You are now officially part of an elite group. Not many people have done the 900cc upgrade. Someday I might.

well as promised update time,

got the wheels back from powder today, have done an excellent job on them glad i got them done.
they are in black satin
DSC04089.jpg

also swingarm and side stand
in gloss black.
DSC04090.jpg

can now put front wheel bearings in (again) and mount the tyre and brake disks then can put it in the forks.
DSC04091.jpg

still need to buy a new rear tyre but its getting there....

I really enjoy watching this build, you do very quality work.

Keep it up it looks great.

so been busy with work lately havent had much time to work on the bike.

nearly got the bottom end stripped down ready for blasting, cant seem to seperate the cases for some reason,

new starter clutch rebuild kit turned up today .

new cam chain tensioner turned up from usa

finally got air in my front tyre. was being a right pain, just need to balance it then i can slot it in the front end and work out mudguard clearance.

thats all for now folks, trying to keep up the momentum. ;)

well finally got the bottom end apart , there were x2 hidden bolts
, took the crank out and gearbox for inspection.
put the engine back together with nothing in it for blasting.

only thing i did today was rebuild my starter clutch. drilled out the back of the bolts that had been centre punched to stop them coming out and replaced all internal rollers springs and pushrods with my new kit, then put it all back together with 12.9 bolts loctite and centre punched the back again.

satisfying when it all goes well.

well figured i would take a look at the main and conrod bearings while the crank is out, not good news.....

main bearings are not too bad some scratches and light pit marks but conrod bearings are knackered.

so once i get the engine back from the blasters 2morrow i can get the engine numbers and work out what size i need.

got the engine back from blasting today, here are some pics.

nice and clean for the rebuild now.........

That engine looks great. Did you do anything special before blasting or just ship it off?
Looks like you disassembled the guts?

sorry boys been busy with life type stuff.

ejether i took everthing that i could out the engine before shipping it off for blasting, it was the best thing i did as its super clean , there is alot of cleaning to do after though, took ages.

so things have been quiet from this lately so thought i would revive it !

stripped and rebuilt the final drive, was a bit daunting at first but is ever so simple really.

only thing i have changed is the seals as all bearings were in brilliant condition and if you replace any bearing you have to set up the gear lash .

here is a pic.

currently doing the middle drive , which again is nice and easy, just changing all the seals as would hate for them to leak as i go down the road for the first time.
