So I've been working on this project for about a year. It not only was my first project but my first bike. I had no idea what I was getting into. Let alone I dont have a garage or any place to really work on the bike. I made a lot of mistakes and have learned a lot through a cafe club we have here in my home town. I did so much backwards Im just posting like its a whole new project that a more knowledgeable me is starting. The only down side compared to the other projects I see on here is that this bike is my daily driver and cant really break everything down then rebuild. This pictures should show what I've done and where Im going.
This site isnt letting me download some of the pics but this should give you an idea. I have a NOS tank for a 1972? coming in. I commissioned a man off ebay to build me a cafe seat pan that should be done mid march. Also a mini battery coming to hide it under the seat. The battery is coming this weekend so I have to play with some ideas to hide it. I cant weld and live in an apartment complex so should be interesting. Nothing some tin cutters and some L-brakets cant deal with.
Lookin' good. I think keeping the bike running as much as possible during one of these projects is a great way for a first timer to avoid getting things so torn down and f-ed up that it never goes back together. It is also fun to feel the rewards of your labor right away.
So just got my new mini battery in. Should be interesting hooking it up. Going to lowes in the morning to build a tray. Might need some advice. Think Im going to ditch the solenoid and starter cable for now to save me the trouble. Again it says my pics are to big to upload?! They are from my phone... Seriously? Anyway, I'll try again in the morning
So this has worked great for two days now but leaving my parking lot today I blew the fuse . Do you think something just grounded out or could there be a bigger issue. See any problems with my set up? ( beside the fact its not pretty ). Still waiting for the tank and seat.... the ebay curse.
Got in the NOS tank. The paint looks sweet and original. Sadly the seat isnt in so I cant put the tank on for good. I bought the bike with that huge 550 seat on it and dont want it to scratch the new tank. Havent been able to mess with the battery issue yet. I only have the weekends. We'll see...
Looking good so far man. What pipes do you have on there? They look pretty cool, I dig the flat black headers and pipes. Also, you gotta love the new tank colors. My bike had the same when I bought it, but it was really badly faded. Wish I could have kept it.
Thanks man. I say this a lot but waiting for parts is the worst. Waiting for the tank trim to come in to finish the tank. As well as a seat/grips/rear tire. The exhaust on there is an old mac exhaust I found on ebay. New they are a couple hundred but I snagged it off there for $70. I guess no cafe nuts were looking that day. I like it but Im about to tank 10 inches off it. This weekend Im going to grind down the center stand mounts and end the muffler there. A couple of good videos on youtube to make your own baffle. Might need some friends help so we will see how it turns out and the tank... well you just cant beat an original NEW paint job.
Oh and the mufflers on the bike when I first started were a set off ebay. They looked nice and shinny/ had a mean sound but I went the 2-1 way for rear sets later. If you know anyone who would want the mufflers let me know. Havent posted them on here but they are just laying around so I would probably let them go cheap.
got a lot done today. still waiting on the seat to come in so didnt want to put the tank on. painted the old one for kicks. scrapped a tone and polished what I could. this should do until the tank/seat/tire come in. let me know what you think. Oh, and i decided to just run pipes for now. working on the muffler still and love the way the pipes rumble.
