1972 CB175. first bike, first build.

Von, am I right that amp hours shouldn't really factor in to this situation? Isn't that really an indicator of cranking power? When the thing hits 12ish volts it should stop charging, right?

I'm no expert either, but the aH is the capacity. Sounds like the regulator is toast to me. At idle it should be a little over 12 volts and at higher rpm's it should only go up to about 14 volts.

Was the bike even running before the acid was discovered? If not, it could be a faulty battery charger.

Many older Hondas did not have a voltage regulator but they switched coils in when the lights went on. It's possible that this bike has no regulator or that the regulator is toast.

Voltage in a fully charged battery is typically around 13.2V. At idle it should be around 12.8 or so and at about 3000 rpm it should hit a peak of somewhere around 13.5-14.5 and should go no higher.

The battery may also have sprung a leak if it's not rubber mounted to isolate it from vibration.

Im pretty sure they are the same charging system. Is your voltage regulator working correctly? Try replacing that and see what happens.
replacing the voltage regulator was my next plan of attack, but it didnt make sense that it was working on the stock battery and not on this new one. perhaps one of the connections is loose. sorry for the dumb question, but does the voltage regulator have to be grounded? (ie mounted to steel?) i have mine bolted to the bottom side of the aluminum shelf that halds my battery.

i just re-read what you guys said and thought about it again. i did leave it over night to charge before i went on a real ride. i installed the battery sat. and only road it a total of probably 5 miles, to the bar and back. sunday i went for a long ride and i noticed the acid today when i realized my battery was loose. it got me to thinking, perhaps the trickle charger started to fry it when i had it plugged in, perhaps it was already fully charged from the factory, but then again, my chatger is sopposed to just "tend" once fully charged. the only other thing i could think of is perhaps it did break the seal from the vibrations, as i had no foam/rubber underneath the batter, it was just strapped to the aluminum tray. it has now been cleaned and had rubber put under it so i guess well see if it pukes again and then ill look at the regulator. thank guys, i really appreciate it. ;D

Yup... Sounds like ya just shook her up a bit. Ive never bought a (standard) battery that came fully charged. Always make sure your battery is insulated from excess heat, vibration, water, etc...

glad to say that the fork seal night mare is over and done. not being able to ride in almost 2 weeks was brutal. finally got the correct seals in and put it all back togeather today. polished the clipons, fork bottoms, made preload spacers, upper fork covers, and a stone guard for the headlight, new boots and seals, polished cb200 upper triple clamp, lowered the front end, and made a bracket to hold and lower the gauges down. its amazing how nice it is to ride a bike that actually has fork oil in it, not chocolate syrup.

shitty news on my end. went out for a ride on new years eve day and pretty sure i blew up the motor. bike made some weird noise cruising at 75, lost all power so i down shifted into 4th (thought it popped out of 5th which it sometimes does) rode for a few seconds and put it back in 5th and then it just completely shut down and wont start now. coasted to the side of the road and couldnt even kick start it or anything. feels like something broke and is binding internally. im gonna be pulling the motor tomorrow to asses the damage. i really hope its not toast... :-\

My money is on top end oil starvation and a melted cam shaft. That sounds like exactly what happened to me on the 200.

didnt get a chance to get the bike to my buddies shop today as hes in the process of moving and ive been really sick. hopefully i can take it over tomorrow and see what shit ive gotten myself into now.

Awesome build man. I will be pursueing some similar ideas on my bike. How are the stock mufflers attached to the header? Also how did you attach the emgo shorty mufflers to your bike?

What is the word on your motor? Hope it's not toast.
