1972 CB175. first bike, first build.

Been Around the Block
recently picked up a 72 cb 175. my plans are to slowly fix the issues and turn it into a cafe racer. ive been having fueling issues recently but have gotten them partially sorted out for now and the bike seems to run ok. when i first picked her up.

drove home and unloaded it and got on for the first ride. i hadnt ridden a motorcycle in 10 years or more so it was odd at first but it all came back fast. went and titled/registered it and have been riding it every day. the filter covers were in pretty bad shape so i sanded them down and through some black enamel on them.

and this brings it up to today. my megaphone mufflers came in the mail today so i took the old rusted turds off and replaced them with the new mufflers. the bottoms of both the original mufflers had huge holes in them. the bike runs much better now and sounds awesome, especially for being such a small cc engine.

i have a set of clubman bars on the way with new grips as well as a new tail light. money is tight right now so this will be a slow process. ill update this as things happen.

ok i need some wiring gurus help. trying to diagnose another issue. i bought these led turn signals on ebay and am trying to get them to work. i plugged them in to the stock wiring and nothing. all 4 stay lit on either left or right turn signal setting. after some research i found i need an electronic flasher made for leds because leds dont draw enough current to trip the stock thermal flasher. i bought an electronic flasher today from napa and plugged it in. nothing. if anything it made it worse. the leds are barely lit with the new led electronic flasher plugged in. it didnt fix any flashing problem, as they are all still lit, just very very dimly. my question is to you guys, or anyone else that has had this problem with another bike or car, what did you do? i dont want to run resistors as they get as hot as an incadesent bulb and i have to wire them inline with each led. (worried they will melt other wires in the headlight, as the front signal wiring is in the headlight) anyone?

anyone? i need this shit solved. :-\

returned the flasher and bought some resistors which also didnt do shit, so i guess ill just live with not having signals. not like anyone here notices them any ways. got my clubman bars in the mail yesterday and put them on today. hands down worse thing i have ever had to do. fishing 15 wires with loom through bars with a 90+ degree bend sucks. got em on and all the bugs worked out. totally different bike now. feels so much better.

and that brings it up to date. after i put on the bars, i noticed my front brake lever wasnt triggering the tail light. i was looking at it a few minutes ago and the wires were loose i guess and just came right out. i took it out of the lever base and thats when shit hit the fan. the movable part inside which i assume is like a momentary switch flew out and is now lost with the little pin that makes contact internally as well as the spring that goes inside. so now im stuck with a black and a green w/ yellow stripe wire and my tail light stays lit like im braking. i have driven it for the last few days with just the foot brake triggering the brake light but now when i turn the key to the "on" position it just lights up and stays lit. is there anything i can do to get back to just having it light up when the foot brake (rear) is pressed? there is no motorcycle junkyards here and i dont want to wait a week to buy one on ebay. this is driving me crazy.

Wow man, one problem after another. For the signals, check out www.superbrightleds.com. Their relays have always worked great for me.

For the brake light, you need to find out why it's always on. Either the switch needs adjusted or there's a frayed wire (bad connection) somewhere. I can't help with the front switch..... maybe check ebay or get a universal setup?

yeah it seems like im just gonna have to find another switch. i just dont understand if it is like a momentary switch where the circuit is only complete when the switch is compressed to make contact. shouldnt i be able to just leave the two wires alone and still have the rear brake switch trigger the tail light like i did for the past few days as the front brake lever wasnt triggering the brake light on its own? it just stays on bright like the brakes are being applied and doesnt do anything else....?

Should be ok to leave the front wires unplugged - as long as they're not grounding out and turning the brake light on.

thats where im stumped. the wires are just sitting not connected (tryed them connected to one another as well) and the brake light still stays on solid.

super kool bike I think you should put a rear fender in it with a small clean tail light tag bracket like the oem set up only smaller my friend did a cb750 that like your bike was to clean to cut you he runs full seat and side cover clubmans and down sized all the huge 70s lights in is burnt orange and bad ass any way just my idea love the bike

Thanks. I didn't want to cut the fender so I just removed it. I will probably keep the tail light/plate bracket as is till I have money for the new seat which will hide all the bracketry and just show the tail light recessed into the bump with the plate below it. Something along the lines of this.

Have you checked the front brake switch wiring? Sounds like you're only focusing on the rear. The two wires should not be touching for the rear brake. Electrical tape them individualy to make sure they don't make a connection causing it to engage the rear brake light. Then disconnect the rear brake wiring to the tail light, this will either rule out the rear brake wiring as the problem or confirm it. I'm willing to bet it's the front brake wiring though, shoving five wires through a 90* bend would be real easty to rip the sheathing and ground a wire, or simply the switch stuck after 38 years.

I'm almost sure it's the front because the foot brake worked fine up intill tonight when I made the mistake of trying to figure out why the front wasn't lighting up the brake light once Applied. I know it's getting power given I accidentally touched the green/yellow wire to the mirror mount and blew the main fuse. The brake light just now stays on lit when the ignition is switched to on as well as when the bike is running, which diddnt happen until tonight when I messed with the front brake switch. I tried hooking the two wires up to a momentary switch and pushed it and nothing happened either. I'm just stumped. I took the headlight off and checked every connection and looked at aWiring diagram and everythig is hooked up correctly. The only thing I found un plugged was a brown female wire. But I noticed it has been unplugged since I did the handle bars last Sunday, which has nothing to do with the brake light switch. I guess I'll take a look at the rear switch tomorrow but I have a feeling it has nothig to do with my issue of the tail light being lit all the time, even when the lights are off. Hopefully this guy can sell me his off of an older cb he has. Not sure of the size but it should be interchangable yes? Really don't want to spend $25+ on a nos switch from vietnam.

no luck on finding the switch locally. looks like ill just order one off ebay. quick unrelated question for you carb guys. do you know the stock jet sizes? mine has 90's in it now and one rebuild kit i found came with 90's and another said 95's. im trying to get it to run right through all the gears and regain the top speed. at the moment i can only get it to go 60 and thats going down a hill. i know somethings up because it breaks up when im pulling it through the gears full throttle. just want to make sure im buying the correct rebuild kit. also, what have you guys done for rejetitng it with some kind of filter add on. i have jc whitney megaphone slip ons and the stock air filters which are nasty. i was thinking og tearing the old paper off the stock filters and replacing that with uni foam that they sell in sheets. any help is greatly appreciated.

The stock main was 90, so you should get a 95 with the rebuild. But as soon as you change the intake, you'll have to re-jet again. That's part of the magic of these old bikes!

And there is a possibility of it breaking up at higher rpm's for other reasons as well (most likely jetting though). When I got my 68, it had what appeared to be the stock 41 year old coil mounted. I got new points, a condensor, and a cheapo coil from JCWhitney and it ran a lot better. Not great, but better.

tore out all the old clogged and ratty paper from the filters and made new ones. i got a sheet of black UNI foam and put 2 layers of foam in each filter. seems to be working good so far. no real updates besides that. going to be taking the carbs off soon to clean as well as rejetting them. just want to make the bike perform like is should. first on the check list, fuel. ill update this as i figure it all out. :)

UPDATE!

got my brake light issue sorted. new front brake light switch came. it actually was the rear switch stuck, so for the time being (untill the new rear switch arrives) i just used grease to keep it in motion.

i also ordered the super bright led's led flasher to solve the flasher issue. i hooked it up and the lights flash now, but all 4 flash at the same time. i reversed the turn signal wires and nothing changed. im stumped. i got them to blink, but they all come on and blink at the same time in both left and right positions. i need help! anyone else have this problem? ???

Sounds like either a faulty turn signal switch or some wiring issues inside the headlight bucket.

Crack it open and check that all the orange wires are together and the light blue wires are together.

yeah i checked the wiring. i switched the 2 live wires around front and back and nothing. the front shares a common ground (one of the green wires that connects to headlight bucket nuts) and the rear is wired like the stock signals were. i put the flasher in and connected the grey to grey and black to black and nothing happened. so after talking to a tech @ superbrightleds, he said to switch the wires and that made them blink. only problem is they all blink @ the same time now. could it be too little draw from the led's? these things are tiny so that seems to be my only guess now is that they dont have enough amperage to trip the trigger? but then again, if they didnt, then none of them would blink yes? eh idk. i hate leds. :)
