1972 Yamaha XS650 - bobber

F me! I scratched off the paint where I thought the VIN would be (on the neck of the bike) but no VIN. This was the only area I found online where it would be...any other places to check before I go down to the state troopers for a VIN inspection ???

It looks like the VIN number right there in the head tube.

This is why you don't bring your bike to the DMV. ;) Did they actually ask to see the bike? Often they are to lazy to actually look at it.

Thanks for the tip on checking out the engine block! If I can find it, that will save me some headache.

You can buy blank vin plates off the 'net. Then just stamp on your frame number. You've got the crucial part of the equation.

Stoked! Found that son of a gun on the front of the motor - clear as day.

WOOHOO! That saved a headache!

So.....talked to DMV and even though I have the VIN on the engine they need to have it on the frame too. Freakin' awesome! Still need to go to local law enforcement office to get it looked at and have them do whatever they need to do in order to satisfy DMV

So here are some pics of the current seat set up. Time to get rid of it. Based on what you see here - do you think I will need a different seat hinge for the new seat?

That number stamped into the headtube is the VIN. Your title is ONLY related to the frame. You could shove a VTEC Honda Civic motor in there and as far as the state is concerned the bike is still an XS650.

Im not sure what the confusion is about...

your vin is S650-122997 that is what should be on your paperwork, if the plate with manufacture date etc was removed it doesn't matter the stamped in number is what they run for a stolen bike report and their system will identify it as a XS650

I'll 3rd this view point. My bullshitometer is going into the red zone.
However, you can get blank plates to put the info into a format they will accept, so no point stressing too much.

The pic of the VIN is not my bike. It was a pic I found on the internet. I was trying to find where it would be located...sorry for confusion.
My bike got into an accident so the frame is completely created from scratch and has never been registered since they re-built it.

Just learning as I go...

Great awesome build man!!! Really a fan off that gas cap! 8)

Thanks Marc - I got to admit it is pretty cool looking. There are definitely some funky things going on but a few keepers for sure :)

Oooooooo... Shit.

Not good my man. You'll have to use the "new" VIN tag idea.

Yeah, that's not a Yamaha neck on that frame. Very beefy, and looks like it's been stretched out too.

So you have a title with the VIN marked on it? Simplest route is to stamp that VIN on your frame and be done with it. The serial number on your engine has nothing to do with anything so ignore that.

Another option is to buy a titled XS650 frame in your state and stamp the VIN from that onto your frame and destroy the original frame (as in cut it into pieces and sell it for scrap). This isn't the legal way to go but it's the simple way to go.

Another option would be to register it as a fully 'custom' frame, but that could be a nightmare depending where you are. The lack of a Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin for the frame and no serial number from that manufacturer would likely make this impossible.

Your right - the frame is completely custom. I ended up just having to re-title the bike. Everything is finally legit with DMV.

Looks like you have a nice bike to start with. Please keep the pics coming as you change things up the way you want them.
