1975 XS 650 Update 4/6 - ON THE ROAD!

Re: 1975 XS 650 Update 3/27

Managed to get my hands on some cheap sportbike rearsets. I used 1/4" steel plate, an angle grinder and drill press to make simple mounting plates for them. The shifter side went on first because it's a hard connection. The brake side is soft and there's a few extra inches of brake line so I figured it could go anywhere to match up the peg location to the shifter side. Both sides were finicky but they're done so now I've got a starting point from which to adjust from. I may replace them altogether but for now they're functional and only 1/2" apart vertically.

The shifter side is from an '01 GSXR 1000. I had tons of shifter linkages lying around from going racing so I just grabbed one that was about the right length. I have no frame of reference here so it went together like this knowing that I'll probably redo it all soon after riding it. The pipe prohibited the linkage to go together on the same side so I'll be running it GP shift for now. Although it doesn't look like it, the shifter clears the muffler just fine.

The brake side is from a 2003 R6 and was tricky to line up properly with the shifter side because of the rearset mounting bracket. Lots of interference here and there but it's close. Again, since I have no frame of reference, it got put together like this and I'll see if I like it. The brake switch was causing all kinds of problems so I tossed it and replaced it with a banjo bolt switch from Mike's XS. For $11, it was an easy decision.

Re: 1975 XS 650 Update 3/28

The battery box was put together out of a piece of sheet metal. This whole exercise made me want to disconnect the starter and toss it and the battery in the trash. LOL! The battery is MONSTROUS. Much too big to fit in the tail section as originally planned. It's gonna stay where it is for now until I figure out what to do with it! I don't like it, but it's functional. Given how easy the bike has been to start, I might go kickstart only, get a permanent magnet alternator and lose the battery & starter.

WOW!!.. everything looks so great!!..

You know, that you dont have to run the stock size battery, you could go with a smaller gel battery with the same craking power.. There are a bunch threads posted on the site about that... Or just call up Glen at Flying Squirrel and he could reference one of for ya!!..

BTW.. I like the whoopie cushion!!

From a pile of parts...to her first ride tonight!
Someone told me that this bike vibrates a lot but nothing could have prepared me for just how much it vibrates!

Primer is made to absorb moisture, so in the long run, I think you should do something about frame painting :)

I would guess that when you synchronize your carburetors the bike will smooth out considerably, much less viberation. My XS 650 is not bad at all. BTW your Keihin carburetors are way cool. I did my XS back in 2005 and settled for VM round slides I wanted flat slides but wanted to get on the road. The centerstand weighs 6# and the front motor mount about 4# (weld in cross tube and use that for the front motor mount it will greatly stiffen the chassis and be lighter) the passenger peg mounts 1 or 2# If you ever get the urge FZR600 forks/brakes bolt up and then 2001 R1/R6 calipers bolt to the lower legs for top notch braking. I eliminated my e-starter. Men kick start their bikes, and heros bump start them!

Geezz!!. I remember when that bike was a pile of junk parts that we literally dragged from the garage!!..

BRavo sir!!.. Bravo!!.. you deserve a DTT patch... I have one here for ya when we meet up!!..

I just tested the bike with a 30 tooth rear (stock is 34) and it's a totally different bike. Much smoother!
