1978 CB750F - Metric Mayhem

Re: "METRIC MAYHEM" - too many new photos to post

The new tank badges use the logo I made for my friend Aaron's new business. Since this was his first official work on a build, I decided to name the bike "Metric Mayhem" as well. They were 3D printed in plastic. They will be mounted to the tank using emblem tape, instead of posts. That way he can use them for future projects as well.

I first drew them up in Adobe Illustrator. (Also comped a back and side view with size specs/ level heights not shown)

Had them rendered in 3D with help from my friend Wes.

This is how it came from the printer.

Final product painted to match the tank.

Wow, the design of the badge looks great in 3D with that texture/finnish.
The style is very 'Soviet' 40's 50's. Sweet.
:)

Thanks. Yeah, I like the look of those old war posters.

Thanks. I just found out that shapeways now offers a polished finish for the plastic I used on the badges. That would have helped with a smoother finish, but I'm still happy with them.

I couldn't find much info on speedo ratio's while researching. On the CRC2 website, they said that most Japanese bikes use 1:2, or 60:2240 for 21 inch wheels. I assumed that would work, and the HD speedo I got is 1:2. May be wrong though... I just bought it from Debrix, because It was about $30 cheaper than the exact same speedo from CRC2.

I got the 1:4 ratio tach, and I'm pretty sure that is correct.

Rear set info on my bike. I don't have a good image of my set but this is basically them. The only difference is the bracket is black, and there is no rubber on the pegs, like the last photo below.

FH20.JPG

They are Raask Rearsets and were purchased at Omar's. www.rearsets.info

They are not actually for the F2 model, because I wanted to get rid of those big aluminum brackets. These will fit the K. That is why I had to shorten the swing arm bolt, and I will also have to shorten the lower rear motor mount bolt.

Here is a mock up of how they sit. (link to high res image here http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5222/5657093934_f4691c2ca4_o.jpg )

I don't have a close up photo of mine installed, but this is how they work. This is also how mine look. Same color and finish. They have the same placement as the K model with those brackets out of the way.

Re: "METRIC MAYHEM" - too many new photos to post

Today I am driving down to Houston, and will be spending 3 full days working on the bike with my friend Aaron who has been helping me with this project. He has the bike in his garage/shop, because I just don't have the room for a place to work on it right now.

I can't believe it, but I just realized it has been over a year since this bike has had any work done to it. It has been moved a couple of times, and constantly put on the back burner due to lack of time and resources. I really want to get it done, but more importantly I want it done right. The next major step is wiring, and then the rest is just getting it buttoned up and running.

This is what is left on my to do list:

-Clutch install
-Compression test
-Install carbs
-Wiring harness
-Shorten the bottom rear engine mount bolt (because I removed the original peg brackets, and am using K model rear sets)
-Install rear sets
-Install brake light / turn signals
-Brakes (rebuild & install)
-Install the license plate bracket
-Install steering damper
-Custom passenger pegs (for the Mrs.)
-Add fluids
-Get the damn thing running
-Sync Carbs
-Get insurance
-Register it
-Get inspected
-Ride it till the wheels fall off

Re: "METRIC MAYHEM" - too many new photos to post

We made some progress, and even pulled an all nighter on saturday. We still didn't get as much done as we wanted to though. This bike needs lots of attention, and nothing seems to be a simple fix. I spent a long time on the seized brakes, and I need to buy new caliper pistons. The clutch rebuild took a lot of time because of conflicting information from manuals. We also had to stop and repair the garage door at one point because it fell off the tracks. I need to get all the images and video off my camera, and I will be updating soon. Hopefully tonight.

Would love to know where you got the 3D printing done. I haven't Googled where to go for it, but if you have a recommendation would love to have it. Might get some DTT logos done up.

I had them printed through http://www.shapeways.com/. I used their plastic material "White strong and flexible", and it is a little more textured than I'd like but it works well. They did not have Alumide available at the time, otherwise I probably would have used that instead. The cost was about $30 per badge printed in plastic.

Whew... Thats spendy...

Thats cheap compared to their other materials. The cost to get them printed in stainless steel is about $175 a piece!

"METRIC MAYHEM" - too many new photos to post

Went to pick up the bike and store it at my parents house for a few months until I move this summer. We got it fired up for the first time today, before loading it up on the trailer. Sounds freaking awesome.

Re: "METRIC MAYHEM" - too many new photos to post

Located a pretty decent oil leak coming from the points shaft, so that needs to be checked out. Also, need a new crush washer for the oil drain plug which is leaking a bit.

Re: "METRIC MAYHEM" - too many new photos to post

A pic of it up on the trailer. Found out that the wheel chock I bought from Northern Tool actually broke during transit. The rear rivets popped out of the base in the back. Luckily it stayed together and in place long enough to make the trip. That would have been real bad... Crap rivets, crap flawed design. It's getting returned.

It will sit here in my parent's garage for a couple of months until I move this summer and have a place to work on it. I'm currently house shopping.
