1980 XT500 BUILD

MCKAY34

Been Around the Block
DTT BOTM WINNER
Hello everyone,
Starting a new build, picked this bike up last week. Its a 1980 xt500, however it doesnt have a matching engine. Im still trying to figure out what year the engine is. 1E6-302000 if anyone knows please let me know.

Plans for the bike.
- strip down, repaint and rebuild.
- 12v conversion
- virtually rebuild the entire bike, its pretty rough.
- I am going to use the bike for an extra run around bike and some off road trails.

The bike is pretty stuffed. it doesnt run or ride and my mechanical experience level is not great, so any help would be greatly appreciated
So lets get started!
WISH ME LUCK!!!!!

Started pulling it apart, the more i dive into this bike the more parts i relise i need to order.
no problems, so far. A few tough bolts here and there, but pretty easy so far.

also got the engine out !
its on my bench so i can work on it better, its the first thing im going to try and rebuild.

I was cleaning the oil pan/bowel thing and amongst all the crap. i found this chunk of metal. It scared the hell out of me. but after some research and diving into the motor a bit more i discovered the metal was the kick starter stop block. Apparently this happens a lot.
Anyway, i can add that to the parts list.
its pretty easy to replace, just 3 bolts. Further inspection, it doesnt seem to have done any damage.

The carb looks to be in pretty good condition.

ok at first glance does anyone have any thoughts on how this looks?
valves and piston.
i will be replacing the valves as soon as i can find out what year my engine is.
also one of the springs have snapped on the valves so i will replace all of that also.

any thoughts on the colour of this piston and valves, seems to be very black.

i cleaned the piston very easily, and looks ok

The spark plug thread is all good!

Checking that list, why would you say it's a 79?
Because the 1e6 number is also next to the 76 model?

1E6-300101-310000 2H2XT 500 E 78... If your vin is 1e6 302000 thst falls in between those #s doesn't it? So 1978.. That's just how I'm reading it maybe?
