1981 CB750K, Let's do this.

Hey guys, As you may have guessed I'm a new member even though I've been on this site consistently for a few months now. I've always been a fan of motorcycles and now I finally have one to call my own. A 1981 Honda CB750k, In decent shape. I've become a member so that I can document my progress for those interested in projects, Help out those who are just starting out themselves as well as get some advice and direction.

I've already done some minor work to the bike,

-Cleaned the Carbs
-New battery
-Valve Adjustment

Nothing too serious but now I'm getting into the heavier stuff. Next up I plan on making a custom seat out of fibreglass (I'll add pictures and give a detail of the planned method tomorrow). So now I have a couple of questions to get me started.

First, What should I plan on doing in the near future
Second, I'm aware that the 81' model is not a typical cafe(I might not have mentioned that I want to cafe it yet) due to the fact it has a kick-start and from what i can tell a better suited frame. Do you guys know of any others who have cafe'd a similar model to my own? If so, a link would be greatly appreciated.

Anyway, That's all for now. Thank you for taking the time to read through all this and I hope to get to know you guys a little better. I'll take as many suggestions as I can get on what to do next etc. so this will be a little more interactive for any of you who wish to follow along.

Thanks,
Etchasketch.

Make sure you check the cam chain tension. These DOHC CBs are notorious for having them stretch out and do damage if not maintained. They are definitely workable, hehe ;) . I have seen a couple very nicely done DOHC CBs on DTT. The first one that comes to mind is a very nice White DOHC F cafe. Actually, I was just reading his Kijiji ad earlier. Forgot his screen name. I'm looking forward to watching your build thread/progress. Welcome to the addiction. :)

Will do jk333, Bike_reject when you cut back of your frame what did you use? were you concerned about the inside of the frame rusting?

Good old sawsall is what I used. Then, I filed the burrs off afterwards. As the frame had no rust inside or out, I just assumed the powdercoat would reach back far enough. Perhaps I should seal the ends off, now that you brought that up. I should've done a hoop as everyone else does, but I didn't have the means to bend one up myself.

Hey guys sorry I haven't posted anything yet, I can't find my camera and im not entirely sure what I want do do with it yet. One thing i know is that i want to get rid of the tank, I want one with a flat bottom that will follow the lines of the frame. I saw Jewbacca started to fit a cb600 tank to the frame, which looked nice. Does anyone know what modifications are required to do this?

Also, for making the bumpstop i want to be able to fit the battery in it. Like this

Does anyone know what kind of battery that is? and how much space I will need to fit it?

Thanks,

Etchasketch.

Hey, that's Pistol's bike and my current wall paper! I wish he would answer his PM's. He hasn't posted since he put up pics of that incredible machine. Don't know what battery that is. I plan to buy a Shorai lithium battery like Hedrives, aka Brad is using. Gotta love that Benjies tank. Heard there were problems with reliability, though...

I'm now thinking on completely dissasembling down to the frame and building it back up. Would this be a better way to redo the bike? I'm not gonna get it out anywhere near time for fall riding anyways. Then i could paint and polish and take a peek into the engine.

Thoughts?

Also im moving out soon, Has anyone done a build inside? lol.

Nothin wrong with a frame up, It will cost about 10 times what you expect it will and take about 10 times as long as you expect. Check out my build... But then again, I kinda bought a house and a ton of stuff has happend from the start to now...

Regardless, what ever you want to do, there is someone here who probibaly has once or twice before. Its a great place to be!

Altighty then, She's coming apart starting tomorrow. I won't have much cash so im limited to what i can do now. If i take it apart I can do a complete job. Needs to be polished and painted. I should have a camera by wednesday.

Here we go!

The battery you were asking about is called an AGM battery. imo, they are the only way to go. no drain tube, no maintenance, and they are about as expensive as an acid fill style battery.

Some of the best prices I've found:

http://www.vintagecb750.com/products/4/engine

Prices can be a little steep so shop around BUT the customer service cant be better!

For the obscure little nuts, bolts and weird parts (great for tires too!):

Spokes/ rims:

And flea bay...

That should be most all you need...

Online somewhere, I think one of the CB 750K/F/C/900F/C/1100F sites, there is a link to an FSM. PRINT IS AND PUT IN A 3" BINDER!

God Speed!

What's your opinion on the Shorai's? Expensive, I know, but the size difference and weight savings are incredible.

True that on the time and cost estimate! :-D And, like you, I had "life stuff" get in the way. Being a grown up is tough, ain't it? :) Oh yeah, thanks for posting the links above. Good to know...

I'm not familiar with Shorai batteries. Do alot of cafe guys use them?

I can't believe that thing only weighs two pounds! You're right, that would be perfect for a racer who wants to cut weight anywhere he could. Hmmm, maybe I shall look into one for my build. haha. ;D
