1981 Honda CM400 Build

Before and after of the frame (bad lighting) but I'm happy with how it turned out. Also, not in photo, I painted my swing arm and kickstands as well. The next thing is the block then I'll be close to reassembly.

A little mock up after getting the swing arm, the shocks (after a good cleaning), and the re-greased and reassembled front end back on the frame. Tank is still awaiting to be painted whenever I find the time. but it's good to see it on the bike. I can honestly say I'm terrified to put it back together and overly excited to see it all in the end.

Engine is painted (flat black) and is ready to be put back on the bike once I finish remounting all the electrical tonight.

Chopped the front fender to a point on each end and also cut the headlight mount slides down to 5 inches to make room on the forks for the clip-ons. Filed them down and then painted the fender and headlight mounts today. Should also have the front end back together tonight as well.

Front view shows the desperate need of one of those nifty little mini speedos with the built in indicator lights. These gauges look huge to me. But for now, I have an exhaust to buy so that will come first.

What did you you do for the engine painting process? How did you clean it? Did you use primer? I know it's not cured yet, but how is it holding up so far?

Looks good in the frame by the way. Getting closer to riding :)

I scrubbed the crap out of it with degreaser. I used scotchbrite pads, a dish type brush and a toothbrush. To remove the degreaser I used a light mixture of dish soap and water. Then I rinsed it lightly(multiple times), and by hand to avoid soaking it. Used my ahop towells to the the majority of the water off. Let it air dry thouroghly and then taped off what needed to be taped off. I didn't not use a primer since mine was already coated in black fairly okay. But, if I could do it again I would just to be safe. As far as painting it goes I follow the can (except for the curing process of course). So far it's holding up well but it takes forever to dry once you lay all those coats, so do something else for a couple days to let it air dry well. They also sell a clear coat of high temp if I'm not mistake if that is the look you want. Hope this helps!

Having one hell of a time timing the bike. If anyone has any tips or know of any threads to check out please let me know. Im trying to follow the manuals timing instructions. Anything could help at this point.

Used a piece of 3/4 conduit to fit between the frame so I have something to mount my taillight to. Also started the seat pan. All I need to do with that is file and smooth it out and get it upholstered.

Also made a bracket to mount the taillight/ license plate mount to. If only I had enough money to upholster it right now. O well, there's plenty more to do.

Almost forgot, I ditched the conduit idea for mounting the taillight
