5ivemoto barn to Grand Canyon build thread

Teazer, first off thank you for the reply

I am at work today and I'll have to go home and put the caliper on it to see what I got

I just looked at your cb175 third time thread

Flabbergasted.

It's incredible, the detail and craftsman ship is an inspiration. Blown away by the fabrication skills that must have took. Crazy impressive. Also I think it's super cool you make it a family affair. I plan on spending my lunch break looking through your threads more deeply. I really wanted to extend the swingarm on the 160 but I didn't know if it had been done or even could be done. Guess I should have searched huh?

We actually got the 160 off the lift last night and it ran. Not great but it ran. First time since the tear down. We ended up keeping the link as close to the same as we could. Still too soon to tell what we have to mess with.

I am learning that getting the clutch cable just right seems to be super important to getting the kick start to work and overall operation.

Love what you did with the wheel

And that mono shock. Wow.

Thank you again for your reply. Tonight is gonna be a night off from the garage but Sunday I'll look into the sizes on the carb and try to have some sort of intelligent respons.

Oops.

That's Tex and his son Zeke. I can't claim any credit for that incredible effort. I just post over there from time to time. :)

Ah crud. I don't forum well. Nevertheless thank you and I'm still blown away by that build

He did say late August, he didn't say what year. I don't see it happening having any of them legally on the road in reliable fashion in the next 4 weeks. Good luck.
The thread does sound like a work in progress with replies to each step of the build before posting the next step in the build. Yet all of the posts of progress happened in less than 48 hours.

Hey guys we have a technical question.

Can we shorten the distance from the carb to the engine by shortening this manifold?

Seems like it'd prob mess with the air fuel mixture but I don't really know. So I thought I'd pose the question.

Jarod isn't running the stock carbs he's gonna run pe20's

Any advice is appreciated.
The air fuel mixture takes place in the carb, it doesn't change if your manifold is 6" or 6' . It will move the power band though.

Decided I'd do the wheel bearing real quick while I had the wheels off the cb 750. Pretty much went wrong at every turn. Ruined the retainer because I was too lazy to make a specialty tool and too cheap to buy one.

Ended up having to buy a new retaining ring and make a specialty tool, lesson learned

Then the bearing wouldn't come out for nothing I ended up using a rasp and moving enough metal where I could get the ball bearings out one at a time. Worked eventually. I'm sure that's not the preferred method. None of this was

Also the rear drum kinda looks like the millennium falcon

But in the end the tires look so good on. It's my favorite budget busting item. Or was at this point at least
Looks as though you didn't drill out the stakes in the bearing /seal retainer. If you did they weren't deep or big enough, that's why you had to ruin the retainer to remove it.

You can, but in this case that motor seems to work best with long intakes. We have really short inlet connections on both of ours and they need long velocity stacks to work well. If you have a spare pair, try cutting them 1/2" at a time and try it on the road or dyno. Rinse and repeat until you get where you want.

FYI, years ago everyone told me my CB72 inlets were too short, so I had up a whole range of inlet tubes machined to slip between the head and carbs and the net result was that it made no measurable difference to me on the track. Maybe it will make a difference at lower RPMs.

What size are those carbs at the slide? By that I am asking what is the slide diameter and what is the carb bore at the slide. Keihin tend to use the (larger) slide size as the stated size where Mikuni tend to use the bore, so a 28mm Mikuni tends to be much larger than a 22mm Keihin.
When I had to make intake manifolds for my Sputhe heads on the XR1327 I called Alan Sputhe to get his advice on intake manifold ideal length. He said ideally they should be 3' long. Off course we are talking a set up for max power and top speed. For more torque, shorter is better.

I'm still ROFLMAO about your comments on the Firerock Deluxe tires. They will make you bike handle...............like a dump truck.
This was especially humorous: "if I ever to a real in depth build that I was going to use these. They compliment the cb750 real well"
Have you seen the new TV commercials where they say "if you're going to do it right" and they show boxers warming up in the ring and one fighter who's back is too you turns around and he's wear oven mitts instead of boxing gloves. FDC's are oven mitts.

Thanks for the reply. We ended up keeping the link pretty close to stock just to play it safe.

We started during the winter and we are getting close now I just wanted to chronicle the builds

The xs 360 and until very late Friday night the cb160 were still on the lift

Beerson is in the wiring stage on the Yamaha and Jarod's 160 had its first trial ride about two am Friday. He was promptly pulled over.

My cb750 had its first start on July 14th and now it's basically a gremlin hunt

750 mostly back together with the engine in. Cb750 engine weighs in at just under three tons

we all went with the motogadget m unit

I recommend it

Beerson used the m button too and his electronics box is especially clean

We also went with those buttons too. They are very nice and have good feel

They run about twenty bucks a pop but I think they are worth it. Water and vibration resistant

After Beerson finished up the exhaust and made mounting tabs he got it on the bike and it frames it well

For a headlight Beerson used the DCC brackets which he ended up shortening to get the bucket in as close to forks as possible which we think gives a real nice tight appearance

And the TRUCKLITE led headlight which has incredible cut off and great output. Also the color is just right and there's no warm up like with hid

So with all of it on he had his final shape. And we are very pleased with it. It was an awesome transformation

Fabbed up a seat pan for the cb750. Missed the bend first time and had to do it over. But anyway I sent this off along with pics of my bike with the pan on and a tape measurer at the rear of the tank and on the luggage rack to VINYLLUXUPHOLSTERY up in Minnesota.

A guy named Nate. Super great guy to work with and all around good fella

And he sent me back a seat that fits like it was made with the bike right in front of him.

I just can't promote him enough he did an incredible job.

Center piece of the cb750
