66 mustang project...

So back in high school my buddy bought a 65 mustang. 6 banger, coupe, nothing crazy. He drove the piss out of it for a couple years and threw it in his parents barn. About 2 years ago my moms husband called me looking for a new toy. I called my buddy and he hooked him up with the old mustang for almost nothing.

Ill get more pics of the car once it starts comin back together. Its nice. Hes tearing this girl apart.

Some things to come:
5spd trans
early H.O. 302
all stainless true duals
9" rear end
GT style bumpers and "vents"
N.O.S. interior
...and lots more.

As of now the o.g. 200 c.i. 6 banger has gotten a complete overhaul. I may be dropping that into something here soon...

Re: 65 mustang project...

I got a Jeep Wrangler you can try to shoehorn that into!

Re: 65 mustang project...

Sorry Von, but it's my Jeep. They don't agree with Ford motors anyway!

Re: 65 mustang project...

Im not so sure about that. My friend Cory had an old CJ in high school with a ford big block in it. It was a death trap...

Re: 65 mustang project...

Nice Von! I have a 66 coupe with a 6 banger that is also getting the v8 treatment. I am using a 5.0 out of a f-150 and I am building it up... should have about 380 HP when done and be a screamer.

This thing was babied all its life and then has sat in my garage for the last few years. Still runs but it is rough, the interior is perfect... I got 4 disk brakes for it and a 9" from a newer mustang to keep things in check

I thought I had a better picture, but I can't find it right now... you can see it peeking out of all the crap in the background... damn I need to clean my garage

So far the trunk has been completely rebuilt and coated with POR-15. The front end was a little crooked in spots so thats been fixed. The door innards rebuilt. New rubber inder the cowl vents... what a pain in the ass that is, as well as new stainless trim where needed. Still a lot to do but its comin along.

The 302 thats comin is a pro built early Mustang unit. High flow heads, reinforced bottom end, deep well sump, massive four bbl on a custom intake manifold. Shorty block hugger headers, titanium valves, etc... Its a nice lump. Hoping for a slightly detuned 450+ hp though it should be good for 500+ easy. Have to keep it streetable since he doesnt want to tub it. The 9" hes running will handle it. Ive been trying to force him to toss a solid axle under the front end with a set of narrow 14" mags on the ends. Raise the nose up about 8" and go gasser with her. Hes more of a pro street guy, so I have to keep him in check :D.

Re: 65 mustang project...

Gasser would be bad ass ;D I have always loved the gasser look. Yeah mine is going more or less with the OEM+ route. I want it to look like it is almost stock, with the exception of 17" or 18" Torque thrusts and have modern conveniences... Something you would have to look closely to see the details. I am even thinking of keeping her kinda quiet, and having electric cutouts for when I feel like being an ass.

F- that mustang, boost that beemer

Hmmm... are you spying on me Force? Well that beemer is actually a test subject... but the project is in a massaged M30 unit in pieces... one day it will get put in a e30 and a South African 335i clone will be born.

Re: 65 mustang project...

ooooohhhh.... Thats badass. Im always on the lookout for 70s and early 80s BMWs. I really want an early 3 series. I have big plans for one if I can get my hands on it. I involves a homemade supercharger, a ton of weight reduction, and a ton of chassis work and black paint (all BMWs should be black IMO, just like all ferarris should be red) . Street legal track car. Missed out on an '87 325i for $400 in decent shape a few years ago. :-\ Still pissed about that one.

there is NOTHING more fun than a boosted bmw. easiest way to make power is a 2.8 block 2.5 head and a diesel manifold with a gt35r on that BISH. hell yes!!!

Man that woulda been a deal, Yeah thats pretty much where I am at... looking for a decent e30 donor... just needs to be straight. The motor will be built with a turbo in the future, but I want to see what can be done NA first. I estimate that 260HP should be pretty easy NA.

this guy has a bunch of photos of his conversion

Re: 65 mustang project...

Woot for the straight 6!

I'm about to drop mine back into my Ranchero for a drive to Austin next month. It's just a lowly 144 though. I thought for a long while about a 5.0 motor but I snapped up a 200 six (that will be rebuilt someday) instead because I love 'em... I like weird stuff.

Re: 65 mustang project...

Thats not weird at all man. I love the inline 6. Id prefer it over the V8 only because everyone else doesnt, ya know? When he pulled this 200 out, he found a guy who builds up old Ford inlines for racing. He said he could get 300+ reliable HP out of it if we wanted to spend the money. He opted to just clean and rebuild it himself. New pistons, valves, cleaned up the heads, etc... Thinking about ordering a performance cam for it to match the header, and 2 x 2 carb and intake setup he wants to run. Lastnight he bought a complete low miles 351M also. Now that he has 2 V8s Im hoping I can convince him to part with the inline 6. Than I just need to find my early Falcon project Ive been hoping for...

Re: 65 mustang project...

How does the 200 feel to drive? What kind of trans did he have in it? Any idea what kind of HP it puts out with that mild rebuild?

Double Woot! for the early falcons:

this is what thrashing looks like at my house

Nice man! Missed out on a 58 Ranchero for $500 a few years ago. Saw it at a car show, ran to the MAC machine, and when I got back and found the owner he was being handed cash by someone else... :p

In stock trim the 65-68 200ci put out 120hp and 190ft/lbs (gotta love the touque of an inline motor...). With the header, a 3" high flow exhaust, 2 x 2 intake, and mild cam, hes figured he would be in the 180 - 200hp range. If you did some horse trading and dumpster diving I could see putting less than $350 into one of these motors to get near 180hp. Which in an early Falcon is plenty for everyday driving. If he went with a real aggressive crank and a full port and polish with a 4bbl intake and tons of head work he could be in the 275 - 310hp range. The bottom ends on these things are bullet proof.

The Mustang came with the 4spd auto. Not a bad trans but a bit of a slouch for anything with decent hp numbers. Can be fixed though. Hes going with a newer (late 70s I think) 5 spd manual. Also, I think I found him a solid axle and springs from a 60s Ford van... GASSER!!!!!

Oh and as far as how it feels... It pulls nicely. Theyre tourquey lumps. Not a ton of top end. You feel like your winding it out on the highway, but thats due to the drivetrain as well.

I had a '65 I-6 powered Mustang for many years. 200cu.in, bigger cam, headers, and three little one-barrels. It was my daily driver through high school and college. I parked it after I graduated and bought a new GT to drive (1996). I had planned to do a second rebuild but the poor '65 sat at my parents house for a LONG time and by the time I was motivated to work on it again it had rusted to the point that I didn't want to mess with it. I finally sold it in sorry shape when my parents moved and I had to bring it home.
