71 Indignant CB175 - Complete (w/ pics)!!!

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - New Updates!

Hi Everyone! My wife and I have completed our move across the country and, after finishing getting the garage set up, I have spent my first official day working on the bike again.

A friend of mine came over and we were able to work out the wiring, figure everything out, and get a flash relay that I had forgotten to get. I still have to find a new bulb for the headlight since I busted the other one, and its a weird bulb with a crazy flange on it. I don't know if Ill be able to find this or if I'll just have to buy a new headlight...

We also got the chain on and adjusted, put oil in the motor and got the exhaust on. I put in the crush washers, then the 2 flanges, and finally the cast aluminum keepers and tighten them down, but I still have about a 1/8" gap between the cast aluminum pieces and the head... Is this normal?

I'll get some pictures up later. It is basically ready to start, but I think I need a new battery, and I also am waiting for consistent 70+ degree days to start painting again. I hope to have this bike up and running long before Vintage Motorcycle Days rolls around. ;D

Here are some pictures of the gap, and a quick shot of the bike. Not much has noticeably changed.

And a nice panarama of the finished garage that my wife took with her iPhone.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - New Updates!

So I found the answer to my previous question about the gap on the pipes. Yes it is correct.

In recent news, my extra cans of high build primer have arrived. Today I unboxed and unpackaged the tank and seat, cleaned off anything that might be on them with alcohol, and proceeded to build a movable paint stand to begin where I left off.

I will let that dry and cure a bit, sand it smooth with some 600 grit. Since I did such a poor job of getting the seat smooth before I started painting, I spent a nice long time dabbing some high build into the holes and indentations with my finger. So after I sand it once, I'll spray another coat or two of high build and continue on as usual.

More to come!

Thanks man. I gotta get going on cutting out the seat pan and upholstering it now. I hope it turns out as nice as yours! The seat on the RS is super nice.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - In the midst of painting!

Ok now, enough small talk, more pictures. Unfortunately not too much more as I have been meticulously sanding the primer to get that surface just right for the base layer. I am waiting on a not so windy day to spray again as I burned through in a couple spots. I guess I don't know my own strength. 8)

So since I am now waiting to spray, I dug out the seat pan I had fashioned back in San Jose, outlined it, and began to shape it up.

It fits on there perfectly snug. It's too bad I finally got the hang of laying fiberglass after I had formed the seat itself. Maybe that would have turned out to be less of a hassle, and more of a breeze like the pan. Oh well, live and learn.

I just need to drill holes in the pan, and one more in the seat for mounting. I will get the foam and covering material ordered soon.

Did I mention she's ready she's ready to start up and ride...? Just waiting on the seat and tank. Oh damnit, and the blasted wiring. Nevermind.

Bwahaha! Nice eye. ;) But I really don't think you want more pics of my beat up grocery getter, though it is a Wolfsburg! However, I will indulge your fascination only because I have some pics online already! ;D

Haha! I thought it was some sort of VR6 monster! I have to admit though that VW's are my #1 passion!

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - In the midst of painting!

No VR6... Just a lowly little 2.0. But I don't know if I would trade the 2.0 for the 6 cyl...the gas mileage is excellent on this car. Almost as good as my 999! ;D

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - In the midst of painting!

Cool. My sister just bought a CB175. Just thought I'd look around see if I could find her some examples of what other people are doing with them.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - In the midst of painting!

Hey John, glad I could provide an example.

Have you seen this listing thread here?

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - In the midst of painting!

I hadn't seen that before. Thanks for posting it!

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - In the midst of painting!

Well I wasn't able to get to painting last weekend because it rained. Sure enough, today it rained again. Oh well, I did get something done.

I happened to have been out riding one day and came across a local auto upholstery shop. I stopped by and talked to the very nice owner and we seemed to have hit it off. So yesterday I stopped by again and brought the seat and pan to see what he could do for me. He said he could skin the pan easily but I needed to reinforce it first so that when he stretched the fabric, the pan wouldn't bend, flex, or crack. We layed out what needed to be done and marked up the pan.

Today, I had everything I needed to reinforce it so I got started. I layed out 3/8" OSB pieces on the pan and drilled the hole that I wanted. I put tee nuts into the holes so that I can fasten down the pan to the seat from the underside cleanly. Tomorrow...or whenever I feel like it...I will fiberglass over all that and I can take to the shop for him to foam and cover.
