Fuuuuuuuuuuuuudge.

I think I messed it all up. Put the base coat on today, and these little buggers came through.... :'(

I don't know... would that fix it? The other alternative is to sand down those spots till the holes are gone, then clean really really well and reapply the primer and base to them.

Open to any alternatives or insight.

I think eyhonda has the right idea.

Glazing putty also called spot filler is made for these kinds of surface imperfections:

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - In the midst of painting!

Yes, it should. It will be softer (sands very easy) so use very sparingly; only a little more than filling the holes. Then sand down to the surface. I would opt to fill in the pin-holes rather than remove material. Removing material will affect the shape and worst case might expose bigger holes. On top of that, it will be thinner. Great build so far!

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - In the midst of painting!

Excellent! This sounds like it might be an easy fix. Should I at least sand off the base coat in those places to put the glazing putty over primer...or is that going to matter?

Thanks for the replies guys, I really appreciate it! ;D

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - In the midst of painting!

Btw, eyHonda, love the SR1k. Nothing like a Ducati liter-bike eh?! Those black rims really make the bike, much nicer than the white. My 06 999 is my daily rider...also in that gorgeous red! ;)

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - In the midst of painting!

Thanks Zero! Yeah, big Ducs make great daily riders.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - In the midst of painting!

Many glazing putties can be applied over sanded and prepped primer and paint. Try to push th efiller into the holes and basically squeegie off any that remains on the surface. After a light sanding, apply a couple more coats of primer for wet sanding.

Then you'll be good to go!

And sign me up as a member for liter Duc fan club. I plan on the S4Rs staying in the stable a looooooong time. But I must say it doesn't like the around town stuff as much as the 2V's. It just begs to be let loose and get me in trouble.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - In the midst of painting!

Thanks for the clarification Ducky. I will try to get this done by this weekend! They say that the Duc's can be made a little more around town friendly with a few simple mods, but I still don't mind. I just feather the clutch when I need to and avoid the cities when I can!

@County, thanks!

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - In the midst of painting!

If I could do the painting all over...I would have someone else do it.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - In the midst of painting!

Well, its at the point that I can sand the glazing putty and try again. But, after this last 'calamity', I am in no mood to mess with it. Anyway, finally found, ordered, and received the headlight bulb I needed for $10. New wiring harness has been ordered too. Its what I should have done in the first place rather than messing with it myself...I guess I was unusually enthusiastic!

I also put fiberglass over the wood reinforcement sections on the seat pan and took it back to the upholsterer for final approval. It stills needs some small layers added in 2 corners, but will be good to go once that is done.

On the final stretch now, just busy work yet to finish!

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - In the midst of painting!

Just boxed up the tank and seat to be shipped to a guy that has graciously offered to finish the painting for just the cost of materials! Now I can focus on the rest of the bike and the things that I actually can do.

Painting is definitely not for everyone.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - In the midst of painting!

Hey bud, don't let the one blemish on the tank discourage you too much. I've had quite a few paint screw ups over my projects, but just figure - if you can do it once, you can do it again. Great build, keep at it man.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - In the midst of painting!

Well one blemish would be fine... Here are some pictures of the last coats of primer, painting of the base coat, and finally...as it sits now. You can really see the extent of how bad I messed up based on that last picture.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - In the midst of painting!

Lol that's alright man, that's what that spot putty is for. It definitely comes down to prep at the bondo point before that, though. I try to finish at 180 grit, but end up working finer grain after primer, then do another coat of primer and then I do the putty for the spots like your last pic, but generally it's maybe 2 or 3 square inches total. I'm assuming you fine sanded after the spot putty again right?

Seriously though, you're doing it, you're not paying someone to do it. However it turns out, take pride in what you did. Everything we do is a learning experience. From body work on a bike, to a car, to tuning the engines that drive us forward. It all relates to something else and you can take the experience from one to another. The good and the bad, just keep on trying and learning.

I know for sure I've down some down right shit jobs looking back. I've actually now gone back and redone a few projects that I've completed, thinking were fine and well, but now I regret the short cuts I took and it shows in the end result. Hell, in fiberglass, I laid down a gelcoat for the first time and it turned out absolute crap. But, on that hood job for a old sled, I learned to make a mold and properly layer matt and account for stress point and reinforcement areas. It's all about the process man. It's all worth it in the end.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - In the midst of painting!

I agree with everything you've said. Definitely a learning experience. But at this point in my life, I know what I am great at, what I'm good at, and what I don't mind letting other people do for me. ;)

This bike is for my wife and her first. I really want to just get it finished and get her started riding. I'm not going to feel bad at all that I didn't do the entire bike myself, which at this point, I really haven't. I'm a strong believer in project collaboration! 8)

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - In the midst of painting!

Alright, the new wiring harness has arrived. Time to finish that damned electrical, hook the old girl up to a gasoline IV and fire her up!

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - In the midst of painting!

Alright, these reproduction harnesses are about as much work as rebuilding the old one, I mean come on, half the connectors don't match up! Can't catch a break.

In better news, I received shots from the first coat of clear finally on the tank and seat! You can't tell in the photos, but there is a touch of pearl in the clear.

I just hope to get the bike into a state that is ready to be fired up by the time they come back to me.
