71 SL70 Mini Cafe (Now Finished and Claimed By My Wife)

My dad has a pair of cushman scooters, we restored one last winter and the other is currently all assembled awaiting its painted parts before we call it done. I currently have 5 bikes but nothing small enough I can ride with him and feel like I'm part of the club. I originally wanted a rigid frame z50 to turn into a cafe racer. Upon embarking on my search i found them nearly impossible to find. I was lucky enough to stumble upon another rarity, you guessed it, an 1971 honda sl70. These bikes im told are quite hard to find and when in pristine original condition can fetch over 5k. This makes the little Sl the most valuable bike i have.

I dont usually mind cutting up a bike but after a compelling conversation with a collector and turning down an offer of more than twice what i gave for the little SL i decided not to take the cut off wheel to the frame.

Here are some photos of the little guy before tear down.

The tank is shot, the steering stop had busted off the frame and both sides of the tank has the dents to show it. the inside is also completely full of rust and still had a quart of what I'm told "At least 25 year old gas." I decided it needs to go. The previously mentioned collector hooked me up with a tank and some other bits that I'm missing.

I want an aggressive fat tired bike so i got these,

110/90/16 for the front, and 120/70/14 for the rear. I was worried about clearance on the front, in fact i still am so the stock trees were swapped out for a set of xr80 trees that are about a half inch wider. I wont know if the tire will fit until i get it mounted after everything comes back from powder.

i know i want a cafe look so i pulled the seat off my RD and test fitted it on the SL

When my tank showed up i took the cut off wheel to the factory tank and removed the back half and mocked up on the factory seat pan. I didnt weld it up yet. I'm going to wait until they come back from blasting, there is a ton of rust on both parts but with it screwed together you can get the idea.

So now you just need a Daytona 140cc 4 speed manual motor to make that little bike scream! Probably too spendy at $1,300 bucks, but Pirahana well respected similar motor for under $400 http://tboltusa.com/store/engines-piranha-engines-c-114_115.html

Should be a fun toy to put around on.

Right now I'm just gonna run the 88cc kit, I need to keep the money low on this build. Not to say it won't get a bigger power plant down the road.

Re: 71 SL70 Mini Cafe

Bigbore kit got here today. I know where I'll be tomorrow. Ill post pics of the build tomorrow. I'm getting a bit excited. This time next week the bike should be in at least a rolling chassis with the engine installed. I love it when a bike comes together.

I dig it! I picked up a 69 cl70 a few months back. Can't wait to see what the motor upgrades are!

Re: 71 SL70 Mini Cafe

I spent 8 hours on the little guy today. The motor is all done and waiting for the paint to dry. I didnt take any pics during the big bore install, it is however relatively simple. There were a couple surprises inside the engine. The first being the condition of the old top end. it was immaculate all the way down to the valve seats. They lapped in with no grinding required. If i would have known the engine was this nice inside i may not have installed the kit. The second thing that surprised me was the quality of the big bore kit. Nice stuff.

Heres some pics of the engine before

Re: 71 SL70 Mini Cafe

Looking good Bull. I will keep an eye on this. I have a thing for small vintage hondas.
I can tell you from experience that a Z50A cafe racer is: 1. A lot of Fun 2. Very impractical for anything than track. Here is a pick of mine.

I think the SL is a great choice as it is still a small bike but will be more comfortable to ride. Keep up the good work.

Is that a 140 you have in there? I think you may have a little more oomph than I do. I was looking for a hard tail 50 when I came across this, just couldn't pass it up. At 6'2" I'm gonna look like a monkey fuggin a football either way. I have enough bikes now that I don't have to build practical, I can just build fun. I keep telling myself "I'm gonna sell this one." It just don't happen.

Re: 71 SL70 Mini Cafe

I know the feeling. I am 6ft 1 and have my knees higher than the handlebars on the Z. The engine is a 160 with a 26mm carby. Goes like hell.

Re: 71 SL70 Mini Cafe

Just for shits and giggles i mocked the parts before boxing them to take to the powder coat. I decided not to mess with polishing the brake plates, im just gonna have them powered.

Any way, heres the pics.

I just waiting on parts. God I hate waiting.

Re: 71 SL70 Mini Cafe

Lovin this build! For some reason i like to see these small impractical bikes turn out! ;D

Re: 71 SL70 Mini Cafe

I got my seat, tank and a few other bits from the blasters today. I spent 2 hours welding up my seat and started body work. While i was waiting for the mud to dry i rebuilt my forks. Powder coat is done and I pick it up tomorrow. Should have at least a roller tomorrow night and have the tins in primer if not painted. Tomorrow is gonna be a long day and hopefully one full of progress.

Heres some bondo pics.

I didnt take any pics between the first pic of the seat to the filler. There was a shit load of welding and grinding. The metal work came out nice. The only downside is the seat pan is rusted all to hell. thankfully the upholstery should cover it. Should be a big update tomorrow.

Re: 71 SL70 Mini Cafe

Yesterday was a long day and I didnt get as much done as i wanted to. The body work is almost done but I'm still a long way from finished. I picked up the parts from powder and they look great. Then I started assembly.

Heres my frame, Its all silvery.

Heres the rest of the little bits

Here she is with the forks assembled and the swinger installed. those fork boots have to go, the tire wont clear with them on there. Looks like i need to order some dust seals.

Close up of the front wheel. Tough aint it.

Next on was the rear tire and shocks. The shocks are off a Suzuki Trail Hopper. I painted them to match the tank.

The last thing i did before calling it a day was to install the headlight. I love this color.

Im not sure about the cafe seat at this point, I think i may wanna go more like this (not mine). Now i just need to get that figured out. Ill take opinions on that.

Thats it for now.

Re: 71 SL70 Mini Cafe

That thing is gonna be a blast! Good proportions and the color scheme is nice.

Small bikes have their place - when tagged nothing is more fun than blasting around town on a street legal miniature bike! I have an ancient CT70 which is like a scooter from the past and two other legal minis I am working on. So I am really following this thread!

Re: 71 SL70 Mini Cafe

After a ton of body work the bike is finally painted. It took a lot of work but she looks like a thousand bucks. Here are some pics of her as she sits now. I think i did well on picking the color on this one.

I also got a lot of fiddley stuff done like polishing my nuts and bolts, hooking up the rear brake and painting odds and ends that didnt get powder coated.
Oh yea when i said the front tire barley clears i meant it.

Re: 71 SL70 Mini Cafe

Well, i didnt get much done today, i found a few small problems that need addressed. Those being the shifter not clearing my new ignition cover, and a hack job on my front brake. not big issues but ones that cost me time digging through boxes of spares and coming up empty. Im gonna have to find some parts to fix the problems. I hate not having the parts i need.

I at least got my engine in and mounted and sorted a few other issues. Heres te pics.
