71' Yamaha R5-Mckay Moto Works

theprep

Been Around the Block
I started this project with a pristine 40 year old bike with the plans to do a complete tear down build after the summer. Within a week of owning it, and less than 30 miles, the clutch had been slipping, in combination with some odd electrical freak out, I got a nice dime sized hole in the piston. Well, the gloves came off, did some research, had a vision, and here I am many $$ later, only half way done. Hope to be completed by Barber Vintage fest in October. Long road, and a lot of $$ to put in a 40 year old bike. But this is my Ducati Monster I was never able to finish.
List of mods:
Scott Clough Racing-rebuilt crank, Stage II port, squished, bored, Wossner forged pistons (estimated HP 55hp)
Economy Cycle-slew of new parts, seals, bushings, basically everything replaced/upgraded with new parts. New Progressive springs, black shocks, brakes, you name it, it's replaced.
Powder Pro-Red Baron frame, clubman bar, swing arm, gas cap, Flat black engine case, tank, fenders, rear shortened and the rest of the bike murdered black. Lower forks black, head fins black. Rim's pc'd black, new spokes.
SpecII-Classic exhaust
Vintage Smoke-rear sets
SpieglerUSA-German top secret LED tail light/turn signal combo
TruckLite-7" LED headlight
Lloyd Vintage-Posh LED turn signals
Dime City Cycles-headlight, bracket, misc parts
SPA tech-LCD gauge pod
custom cafe seat matched to tank
custom designed logo (Mckay Moto Works)
serious weight loss program, custom premix tank
6 speed transmission swap
Bridgestone Battle Axes
some trick detail pieces

Few pics before the build began: you'll be relieved to know the pristine parts went on to live another life on a stock restoration

Re: 71' Yamaha R5 cafe-Mckay Moto Works

Nice list of parts and changes. That bike was so clean. Wow. But that was then and this is now.

6 speed was smart upgrade - later 400 I hope. They kept the same ratios into the RZ range.

55 is a lot of HP to drag out of an R5 and still have it streetable. A TR3 of the era didn't make much more than that , and it was a racer.

Pity about the Autolube tank getting the deep six treatment though. I have run premix on the street and never again. It's fine for my 2 stroke racers but my street 2 strokes all get a pump. It's just easier and more reliable than forgetting to take oil on a run.

Re: 71' Yamaha R5 cafe-Mckay Moto Works

I'm jacked to see a Yamaha 2-stroke build. Got any info on the Vintage Smoke rearsets? I've been searching for a reasonable set for my RD

Re: 71' Yamaha R5 cafe-Mckay Moto Works

Update: crank/cylinders/heads/pistons are in from SCR. Bottom end with new 6 speed tranny/Barnett Kevlar race clutch buttoned up. Heads are being blasted to paint black. Frame, swingarm, tank, lower fork arms are done as are the fenders, engine case covers, hubs. All that's left to powder coat are the wheels. Phase two will be suspension, swing arm bushings etc to get the bike upright. Phase III is MZB ignition, SpecII Classic exhaust, gauges etc. Hopefully done by the end of December. Still have a few tricks up my sleeve for the build.

Re: 71' Yamaha R5 cafe-Mckay Moto Works

Nice hole in the piston! Looks like its going to be a nice build, freshly powder coated frame looks super shiny.

Re: 71' Yamaha R5 cafe-Mckay Moto Works

thanks. So ready for this project to end. So time consuming and it's eaten a nice chunk out of my wallet

Re: 71' Yamaha R5 cafe-Mckay Moto Works

This is definitely relevant to my interests. 8)

It's such a trip, how two guys can start from about the same place, and take a build in two completely different directions.

I'm looking forward to seeing how they compare after completion. I'm looking at finishing before Barber 2012. ;)

Re: 71' Yamaha R5 cafe-Mckay Moto Works

Engine is done. SCR did some fine work, excited to see what this engine will do. Big thank you to Skywalker for his guidance and use of his workshop.

Re: 71' Yamaha R5 cafe-Mckay Moto Works

Tell me you are going to put at least one of the coolest stickers in the world(besides McKay Moto of course..) on the bike before the shoot!

If anyone else wants a couple send me an e-mail with your name & address and I will send one out. Include a couple of pics of your bike that i can put in the upcoming gallery on my site and i'll send out a bunch of 'em!!!

Re: 71' Yamaha R5 cafe-Mckay Moto Works

Parts ordered, Phase II and III (final) will be in full swing the next few weeks. March 1st completion date, I'll make sure to get plenty of pics and specs up. Not one for step by step pics, too ADD. I just do it and go!

Thanks for the continued interest, hopefully it will be all worth the wait.

Re: 71' Yamaha R5 cafe-Mckay Moto Works

Sexiest rear sets I've ever laid eyes on, Vintage Smoke. Folding pegs, just pure quality pieces.

Last box of goodies. Odd how $1200 can fit in such a tiny box. Bulk of cost is MZB iggy.

Those ballistic are cool. I have them in both of my bikes. Just make sure it never drops below 6v.

good to know, thanks for the heads up. Regular tender ok?

Re: 71' Yamaha R5-Mckay Moto Works (new pics 03/16/12)

Yes. I have both a tender and a ballistic charger. The only time I need something more then a tender is if I have to balance the cells. Which you shouldn't need to do unless you go below 6-7v's.
