73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! Thanks to all for the kind words!!

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

Working from memory here so bear with me - I think my keihins had 95's (the cl175 has a larger main than the cb175 - I'm pretty sure) so if you are putting on Uni's, I suggest going up one more size.

But I just wanna say - I am most likely wrong.

Thanks! I'm here all week!

That's why there's a (new) disclaimer at the bottom

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

Thanks Rich, I'll just do the opposite of whatever you say and I should be all set. 

Bikes starting to come together. I'll get over to the shop and get some pics for you later. I got the tank painted. I had purchased a rattle can of duplicolor "storm grey" that was on closeout for $3 just to get a bead on the color I wanted. It was perfect and the paint laid so well on the tank that I went back and bought 2 more cans, enough to finish the seat as well and have enough for another bike I'm working on. I'm going to clear coat it but I saved myself about $60 this way.

I actually plan on using that same color for my tank and seat ;D
Do you plan on shooting it with some 2k clear? because there's a little debate on compatibility issues.... I'd hate to shoot some clear on a pristine paintjob, just to watch it crack and fold infront of my eyes.

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

Thanks for the heads-up on the clear. I'm going to clear it but I will check with the paint shop on what to use. I have a gun so I'm not limited to rattle can. I'm back in the shop tomorrow so another update and pics should be on the way.

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

Okay so here's a few pics. All of this is still in mock up phase. The motor is bolted in but the bolts aren't tightened yet as I may pull it all apart for paint touch up. I will try to get better pics (not cell phone ::) ) with some close ups. I have painted the handle bar switches etc.

I'm using heat wrap as a fork wrap and I like the effect. I saw this on a Japanese street tracker build. I plan to mimic that in the exhaust which should give the whole thing a pretty tough look. I'm close to a runner here. just need ot make some final design decisions then wrap up the wiring etc and I'm ready.

I love the overall look and colors you're rocking. I like the tape on the forks too, but it should stop at the lower tree. Maybe gaiters below that?

exactly what i was thinking... it looks weird below that top part...

Looks good Diesel! Can't wait to see this one finished.

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

as far as the wrap goes, Jury's out til I get the front end together completely. The pic kind of exagerates it a bit too. One problem is I can't find the pic I saw, I'll keep looking. The forks are rusty below the tree so it needs something and honestly I think the "it looks weird" response may be due to the fact that you don't really see reverse gators. might just take some getting used to, but my mind is open still so we'll see. I do know that I don't want the wrap and gators.

Thanks to all for checking in!

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

I am digging the wrap like that, it seems to have an edgy look that makes the bike have a raw purpose built feel to it. I like it!

Mark my vote for keep as is!

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

Twisted- thanks, yeah, that is exactly what I was going for. It's just a bit too bulky looking on this little bike. And the grays were kind of throwing me. I think I found a great solution though. I wish I could take credit for this idea but the Wrenchmonkee guys use this stuff all the time. I give you - Hockey Tape.

I think the scale of it is right and the color is better. It simplifies the color scheme and looks, well, athletic. 8)

I gotta say, its begging to be used on other parts of the bike too. I'm going to have to exercise restraint here.

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

Looks a lot better with the tape under the lower clamp. But, I'm not sure I'd trust it there. I can see it getting hot in the sun and getting the adhesive melty and sticky and sliding...maybe? I'm just picturing worst case scenario.

Ahh, but you see, there's no tape under the clamp. This is purely decorative, need to hide rusty fork tubes somehow. ::)

Re: 73 CB200 straight up Cafe racer!! "Smokey"??!!

Too good to use chrome pipe? :D

It does look a lot better.
