74' CB550 Cafe (Version 2.0)

Re: 74' CB550 Build (It runs!)

Came home from work yesterday and took her for a spin again. Still have some carb issues. She doesn't want to run with the choke all the way open and has some idling issues. Hopefully i can adjust the air/idle mixture screws and get it correct. I am guessing that is what part of the problem is.

Re: 74' CB550 Build (It runs!)

well done on the build matey! looking great so far, are you sure you dont need to re-jet her as you are running pods now.
all the best , looking forward to some more pics!
Mark.

Well, I am not sure. I up'd the mains to 110 from 100 and left the others stock. I don't know if I need to up my slow jets or not.

Re: 74' CB550 Build (It runs!)

Been trying to tune her and getting it running right. I opened up the carbs last night and realized that when I rebuilt the carbs, I placed the clip on the second level from the top = lean problem (hopefully). I am moving them down and then going to see if that works with some idle/mixture screw adjustments.

Countdown to MotoGP events (5 days and counting).

Re: 74' CB550 Build (It runs!)

Hey Andrew, replied to your PM. Yeah, definitely monkey with the needle settings. They'll make a dramatic difference.

Also, I forgot to add that my carb settings are for a slightly baffled open exhaust as well.

Chris

Re: 74' CB550 Build (It runs!)

Thanks Chris! I am at around 800ish above sea level I believe. I hope to see the effects of the needle clip move tonight. As I put the carbs back together, I went to bench sync them using a .040 drill to set the gap and noticed that the slide on #1 doesn't go down as far as the others and when I adjust it, the adjustment holder is not level with the holder on #2 causing the dust cover to not sit level. Is this an issue?

Could the arm coming off of the rail be bent to cause this? Is it an issue?

Re: 74' CB550 Build (It runs!)

So I figured out that the issue above was that you can't get 2 slides to bench sync and line up when one of them is backwards. I was trying to bench sync the slide side on carb 1. Idiot.

Anyway, I lowered the clips on the needles down the the second spot from the bottom to richen the mixture and did a rough vacuum sync (I need to redo it and get a better sync). This actually made the bike run really well. There is still a slight hiccup at about 2500-3k rpm. I finished her all up to get her roadworthy enough to ride this past weekend for MotoGP and to an event downtown the night before.

She made it downtown but has a small oil leak out of the pan gasket and has some electrical issues. Due to a blown main fuse (caused by a short I haven't found) I couldn't ride to Moto GP but have about a month to get the kinks worked out for Barber.

I learned a lesson: I need to plan ahead and leave time for shakedown runs as opposed to a shakedown run on the way to the event.

Here is a pic at the gas station on our way downtown (me and JSJamboree):

Re: 74' CB550 Build (It runs!)

Bringing it back from the dead.

I figured out some of my carb issues. I still need to adjust the float bowls a bit and install some inline fuel filters. I swapped my slow jets from 38's to 40's. I also installed some Steel Dragon Velocity stacks from Dime City.

Big shout out to Beatnic and Troybilt for helping me at re-adjust the floats and float needles at Kiley's.

I redid my rear tail light and swapped the Lucas lookalike for an LED Cateye that I had. I also made a bracket for the license plate. I also made a battery box and welded the bracket onto the frame. I need to snap some pics of them each.

Here are some pics from Kiley's that I snapped.

Rear shot, you can see the new tail light and plate location.

I consider this phase 1. Over the winter, I plan to install rearsets, redo the front suspension, redo the battery box and maybe some other odds and ends as well as pick up a new project. Right now I am just riding it and enjoying it while the weather is still decent.

Blast from the past, but any details on how you mounted your cat eye? I FINALLY got my rear hoop welded in and want to mount my tail light exactly like yours (I'm still using the fender, so it'll be between the top of the fender and bottom of the hoop) Thanks!

Re: 74' CB550 Build (It runs!)

Kev - Sorry, I just saw this.

I laser cut a bracket that had holes to mount the cateye and then welded it to the hoop. I will try to get some better shots of it and post them.

Re: 74' CB550 Build (It runs!)

Did you have any issues wiring it? Mine just came in the mail yesterday:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006ID36RC/ref=pe_175190_21431760_M2T1_SC_3p_dp_1

Wiring:
Ground: black wire
Tailight: yellow wire
Brake light: red wire.

Right now, I have a ground wire going from the housing to battery negative terminal. Would I just run the black wire to battery terminal? Are you having an issues with battery drain?

Re: 74' CB550 Build (Version 2.0)

Bringing this thread back from the dead.

Renamed the title, Version 2.0. This winter I am redoing the 550. Due to my procrastination during my original build, I ran short on time and cut a few corners and didn't end up building what I had originally intended to build. I plan to do some longer rides this year and want to make it reliable and more comfortable)

A few items on the list:

Build a new seat/seat pan
Add rear fender
Add front fender
New Bars (ordered Supermoto bars for a more upright position)
New front forks
Engine Rebuild
New Battery box/electronics box
Cleanup wiring harness
Cleaning up frame
Blasting and powder coating the frame and other bits.

And other things as they come up.

Here is a shot of my "organized" garage. I park outside in order to have a work area. I will have to get a better picture but on the wall blocked by my new 350 project is an engine building workbench with swiveling drill press table, mig welder and welding table.

Here is a picture of the 550 before the tear down.

Side shot with the seat removed to fab a new seat pan. When I originally build the rear hoop section and seat, it didn't go all the way to the hoop. My new seat pan will follow the contour of the hoop and be about the same thickness, maybe a hair more.

8426974252_063d1c674c_z.jpg

I originally cut the fender brace off of the fender and ran that on the bike. I decided to go more function and less form and run a front fender. I cut the fender down and then will weld it to the brace. It will most likely end up black.

8425881921_ee5b44f1a5_z.jpg

Side shot with the fender and seat pan. I have to roll the pan slightly to fit the contour of the frame and also will be cutting the current seat mounts/braces and recessing them below the frame rails. The seat will hug the frame.

More to come later!

Re: 74' CB550 Build (Version 2.0)

Only thing I am taking from you is the comfier bars. My seat will still look the same. Not doing the cowl I was talking about. Hate you!

Our bikes will still look very different.

Re: 74' CB550 Build (Version 2.0)

I love my superbike bars, low enough to ride sporty, high enough to not be a cripple after 8-900 miles in a day.
