got a new bike today for $180.. clear title new dirt tires lots of receipts of $1500 in parts + labor.. dont know why i got it so cheap lol.. probably cuz its been sitting in his garage since '05... carb is clean and moves easy (actually sittin next to me now)

i have a problem tho i had two keys, i lost one 45 minutes after having the bike.. dangit and i grabbed the other one and turned the ignition and it snapped off in it.. we dont have any bike boneyards around here and my yamaha dealer is closed.. and instead of buying a new jey im gunna do a toggle under the seat.. only prob with that is there are 4 wires off the ignition, 2 reds, one black w/white and one solid black, the black with white comes from the battery, the other??? does it matter if i splice the 2 reds(power?) on one side and the two grounds to the other side of one toggle switch?? or must i use 2?

plans, street tires, cafe type bars, velocity stack, rejet carb, smaller seat etc etc..

Great score on the bike first of all (any pics?).

I don't have a wiring diagram handy, but please don't jump the wires in the switch. Red to red will probably mean the ignition is on all the time.

ok thank you for that, i know almost nothing about bikes so figured i would ask, in the pic its partially disassembled due to it haveing 5 year old gas in the tank(drained at schucks already) and me checking the carb out etc, the battery is dead too obviously lol

looks really really good for $180 in my opinion, the ad had no pics and they said it was in bad shape you could imagine my surprise when i pull up and see this sitting in the driveway lol, i was like nice bike wheres the one for sell.. HAHA

oh btw the tires are new and so are the tubes they were "deflated for storage" or something lol no big deal to me

Wow. I'll give you $200 cash for it right now! Ha!

A lot of the older ignition switches are semi-universal. Should be pretty easy to get a new one (I think mine came from JCWhitney for $10). If you do need to connect the wires to start it or something, just remember they are live wires that may need disconnected quickly. Just don't start a fire!

I used to have the 125cc version of that. I called it the Yamapukie. It was built out of a pile of parts that I found behind a shed. I chalk it up as a learning experience..lol. I seized it up once at 70mph with a passenger on the back, I kept it upright, but my shorts were never the same again.

You could probably solder the key fragment thats stuck in the lock back onto the key base if you find somone whos handy with a soldering iron. Just an idea. Of course, getting a new ignition barrel probably won't be a big deal for these fellows - search for 'Yamaha DT ignition' on ebay and see what comes up.

Anyway, nice bike. Looking forward to seeing what comes out of it. If you're after an expansion pipe for a bit more kick, see what other period gear you can come up with. Similar capacity bikes pipes may work for you, especially the competition-oriented 80 to 125cc bikes. Check the Kawasaki build in my signature to see what I mean.

well i figured out what went wrong with the second key... the ignition number and the number for the keylock on the seat are 1 digit different.. and when i tried to turn it it jammed and now i cant get it out even with needle nose pliers and a super grip... owell, i figured out by taking the rest of the ignition apart that you were right, the two reds connect on one curcuit and the two blacks on the other! thanks man i coulda messed that up bad lol got it fired for a second with starting fluid but have not got gas in the tank yet..

thanks more updates will be posted when i get the new stuff, any ideas on a paint scheme? i was thinkin red w/bronze(or gold) accents, or vise versa

I'd keep the stock colour - its pretty cool, and the tank and covers look like they're in really good condition. If you do want to paint over them, try and get another set in not-so-good condition to do it with. Just my 2c.

on my two or three bikes i am pretty sure that red to red sends the power and the black/white(from the points) and the black (ground) are connected when the key is off.
the on connects the power from battery to bike
the "off" connects the points signal to the coil to ground. that way there cannot be any fire when the key is off.
maybe it is the same for you. but if you hook the two pairs both together i bet there will be power but never any spark

you are right, it fired for about 2 seconds if that now it cant get spark(maybe it jumped and i didnt notice..), i also realized its not red-red its (red-brown) and (black-black w/white)

the whole bike is in really good condition, the seat has only one tiny hole on the right side, and the tank has 2 dents, one you can see in the pic, the other is alot smaller.. the rest of its nice, the plastic front fender is peeling the paint but i was thinkin of finding a metal one anyways..

pulled the spark plug and its brand new, the piston is brand new and so clean i can read the serial on the top its shiny like its never been fired off! the stator?? is corroded on the outside of it but the copper coils behind it and the point look new.. the battery has no acid in it, they said it was new maybe they forgot to fill it or ? would it evaporate? can i run it without a battery? needs a headlamp the low beam circuit looks fried but high looks good.. hope to have it ride-able tonight, good thing my buddy works at a local bike shop called eagle leather hes gunna pick me up some goggles an a retro helmet lol

put some small bars and unhooked the front brake today too cuz i was bored.. lol i need a new mirror tho, and some new turn signals..

took the tumbler apart and reset a new key to it, was super simple! i have a key again yay lol

well i have a bad coil... its $80 for an oem part so can i use a universal coil? i found some online for like $14 lol

The hell with OEM, since when has any of that stuff been good? ;D

Seriously though, OEM is great for all the 'restore to the tiniest detail' nutters out there. But, if it doesn't bother you, just go with the aftermarket stuff. Cheaper, probably same or better quality, and at the end of the day you'll get the parts you're after.

actually called yamaha and it said $80 online but they said it shows $140 in there catalog.... eff that

6v and i bought a new cheepy $11 universal at a bike shop today.. still no luck so im guessing condensor or points even though it gets power right up to the coil and nice and bright light too.. owell i started the tear down im gunna buy all new electrical for it since its so old.. bikes 90% apart already.. im gunna strip the paint or find a new tank with not dings the same color.. i like it its really metalic and pops in the sun.. first real sun we had was today i guess thats what i get for living in WA lol

Make sure the battery has a full charge and turn the engine over until the points are closed (touching). Turn the ignition on (jump the wires) and let it set for a minute or 2 - the coils should warm up.

Do you have a spark at the points when trying to kickstart it?

i couldnt tell if i got spark at the points i just figured i did since my probe light flashed.. its the cheep kind you ground and probe to a power source and when it hits power it turns on..
