74' Yamaha RD350 - Crawlin' along

Re: 74' Yamaha RD350 - Engine In! & Inevitable Wheel Clearance Fun

The twinline RD has the Moto Carrera swingarm. You can ask Doug (owner of moto carrera) for an idea of length on the swingarm. The shocks appear to be RFY and are everywhere on ebay and most are 340mm (or 13 3/8") eye to eye. I think anything under that would be cutting it very close on travel

Re: 74' Yamaha RD350 - Slowly pickin away

Thanks for the info lucas, hopefully I can get some money to spend on this thing soon.

I've been slowly meddling with random stuff, mostly paint. My $20 rattle cans were going pretty good until the last bit of paint I was putting on the tank never hardened...so again the tank is completely stripped. In the mean time I decided to start looking at whats going to have to happen with the wiring and I painted and polished the engine covers.

My plans to run an o-ring chain went to hell pretty quick...I should've known it would be too wide after seeing numerous people on here turning down sprockets to run slightly smaller than stock o-ring chains. The oem D.I.D chain is $61 so I'll run one of those and replace it more often I guess.

Never mind the dirt..it'll be cleaned

DAmn dude, i dont look at this for 2 weeks and this shit is almost done! I gosta pay more attention to this, mate.
And i repeat, lookin' fuckin stunnin'

haha damn I think for one second that i've come up with an original paint/polish plan for my engine and the next day see two more already with it. Looks fantastic.

where are you routing the wiring from the left side case up the frame? just zip tied to the frame?

Thanks for the kind words guys!

Yup, whole lot of zip ties will be going on. Hopefully I'll get after shortening wires this weekend...if the weathers shitty that is. Otherwise, booze and boats!

Anyway, the other side. Pump cover didn't shine up, I'm going to try wet sand it but if that doesn't work then it'll have to get redone.

And finally got around to hooking up all the rear break linkage

Re: 74' Yamaha RD350 - Continuous setbacks

Well this project isn't dead yet but I almost wish it was so I wouldn't have to think about it anymore. I've been trying to find a new place to live and saving money for that has taken every penny out of this project. I did finally manage to wire the bike, get the tank back to primer and get my new clutch kit fitted so all that remains is a throttle cable, reg/rec unit from Oregon motorcycle parts and a non o-ring chain(new gauges and longer shocks once money allows but not a necessity). Easy right.

Wrong. The RD throttle cable is made up of 4 separate cables, all of which you have to buy individually for insane prices if you're looking for NOS parts since they are no longer offered by Yamaha. But there is someone on eBay selling complete reproduction cables in the UK. Sounded pretty good(ebay shows 48 sold so far) and the price was fair. Since it was the part requiring the longest shipping time I figured I'd order it first. I still haven't been able to order the reg/rec unit or chain yet so that train of thought doesn't matter anymore.

The cable arrived today and I was very excited to get it on so within 20 minutes of receiving it I tried to put it on. Emphasis on tried. The overall cable looked good, the "new" cable had clearly sat on a shelf for a good while since it was starting to rust but I could lube it up and move past that. But the cable literally cannot fit. The 2 cables running to the carbs off the splitter are at least 3 inches too short. They physically cannot be hooked up to the slides.

I'm beyond frustrated at the moment because It would seem that this should've happened to 48 other people as well. When I look at the photo they have on eBay I can see the problem now.

Old vs. New

I'm waiting on a response from the seller to see what they are willing to do.

If I don't receive any help from them I'm going to cut 3 inches out of the middle of the casing to get the length of cable I need and just tug the whole cable back a bit which will work except its going to make the oil pump cable stick out that much further. I'm literally $200 away from finishing this bike but that couldn't feel further away.

Tanks been primed and front fender has been clipped since I took this one. I hate the gauges but they'll be gone once I can afford it.

Is this the land for a crank seal if it is get a new case half. you created a huge weak point for a leak and you will go lean and cook this motor ask me how i know
I had to dump connecting rod and hunks of cylinder sleave outta my chamber becouse of a crank seal leak. i would not run that case with a new crank and wiscos for nothing, might as well throw them away now. no shit a locked back wheel at speed is no way to break in a new bike i have a few lower case 1/2 with no upper and you wont have to pull the motor down just reglue

Yeah man... As Brad stated, that damage is BAD BAD BAD. I know you've put a ton of time on this thing and are frustrated but replace that now or all the work you've done so far may likely end up scattered across the road.

Also, earlier in your thread you posted the pic of the broken fork lower. That is going to fail. Probobly. The section that's broken is part of the seat for the seal. There are a coupke possible ways that it could fail, and none are good. If you lose a bunch of oil all of a sudden from one fork at speed you're fucked.

Again, I know you're frustrated and having a hard time finishing this up (for good reason, no shame there) but don't cut corners. Youre running a very very high risk of destroying this bike or getting really hurt. Nobody wants to see either of those things happen.

Von and Brad, could he have the case welded and machined or is cheaper to just pick up another case?

I'm sure a capable machinist could probably fix that, but it would likely be cheaper to just find another case. I'd like to see the top case as well. Looks like someone pried the seal out with a screwdriver for some dumbass reason.

Grate build hopping to see a finished product some time! I know how you feel going to school and building bikes. But my biggest issue is cash for parts since I don't have a job... But im getting a free RD350 im guessing its a 73 or 74. So ill be following your thread closely when I start on that project.

With all due respect... 99 times out of 100, the most expensive project bike you'll EVER build is one you get for free. Especially a two stroke. :)

Oh ya I plan on the RD being a lot more than my other builds, im going to be getting a job in the summer with real $ coming in. And im just repainting my honda for a quick flip for a little cash. But that's one thing that i know that im going to do is go all out on the bike. But I am getting lucky with the bike i haven't seen it first hand but its been sitting for 10+ years in a basement so i know all the rubber bits will be gone but there will be very little to no rust! And if I think its going to cost to much ill just sell it!

Dunno about where you live, but here, it is near impossible to sell old or modified bikes for more than what they cost to restore or build.

I think thats tru for anywhere! unless you have a name in the modifying world. The Honda in a SL350 with 4,000K on it and I got for $200 with a title. I got it running and now Iv got it torn apart to give it a fresh coat of paint and to clean it up. Then ill sell it for a little profit. Ill only have around $300 in it after the paint so I know I can get that for a running titled bike that just needs fresh tires. I wont make a killen but ill make some cash and if i break even then what iv learned from the work iv done on the bike will be more than worth it.

As for the RD350 I would build that for me! So I wouldn't care about the resell value of it like my XS400 ill never sell it!

Sry for hijacking your thread!
