78' cb750f ss rear set question!

so first post, no need for much of an introduction but i recently started a 78' cb750f cafe racer project. i own a repair shop with access to all kinds of tools including tig/mig welders so when it comes to fabbing something up, i'm no jesse james, but can get things good enough.

anyways, my question is, and YES i've searched (not new to the forum thing) and can't seem to find much info about it (even on sohc forums). i'm just gonna copy and paste what i posted in sohc forums because i hate typing.

anyways, i picked up a set of 01' gsx-r 1000 rear sets for my 78' cb750f, and want to get them mounted on the bike. i know i'm gonna have to weld a tab/mounting location on the frame somewhere and get shorter engine mount thru bolts etc.

my main concern is with the shifter linkage. i feel like its really going to be alot of trial/error to get the linkage right and dont want to order too little or more than what i need interms of a custom linkage kit. my other concern is getting something that will fit the splines of the shifter shaft.

if anyone can point me in the right direction and post up some pics of how specifically you mounted your rear sets, that'd be greatly appreciated. i dont want to go about welding a tab on, mounting them, and realizing that where i welded to would physically be impossible to get a linkage set up.

also, if anyone can point me to a site that offers DIY linkage kits

thanks in advance

You can find linkage at the DCC site below.
But no matter what you will need to cut down to the length you need.

http://www.dimecitycycles.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=linkage&x=0&y=0

McMastercar for the linkage

No real way around trial and error to make things work.
Raask makes bolt on rear sets, about $300
Tweakin had someone make some that bolted on too. Check that out

If not just mock it up and try.
You are worried about wasting a few bucks on a splined end or some rods?

He is a member here as well as sohc4.net
Can't really not find him after some googling of cb750f cafes

Thanks, can you provide me with a link to Tweakin?

Here's the link to his profile - http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=3863

thanks, yeah i've seen his bike, both of them are my inspirations for my own haha. i think i'm first gonna finish up rebuilding the motor/powder coating, putting it back in, before i tackle the rear sets so i know how it'll work out in terms of the shifter linkage.

any updates on this? i bought the same rear sets lol and going to start this project

not yet sorry.. been busy at the shop and currently just working on the motor. finally got all the parts back from machine shop (installed new valve guides etc.. and had him remove 4 damn head studs that wouldn't back out), after i powder coat and put the motor back together, i'm gonna toss it in the frame and test fit everything (just ordered a manx tt style tank & thruxston seat from legendary!!).. ill let you know how i go about getting the rear sets to work on this thing

Just replying to keep this thread alive. I'm interested as well, as I've got a '77 supersport.

okay just an update.. heres a progress of my build so far http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=46280.msg525360#msg525360

i got the engine etc back in temporarily so i can start mocking up a rearset bracket set up prior to stripping the bike down again and sending the frame to be powder coated (i dont want to powdercoat until i know what im welding on etc).

i had received a set of 01' gsx-r1000 rear sets but honestly, do not think they will work. I think the main issue is the fact that the link on the gsxr rearset faces down and i need it to face up, so theres ~$100 down the drain lol. i ordered a indexable rearset from dimecity. now, i think im going to aproach this like how tweakin' and branden and funjimmy did. i ordered 12x12 1/2" aluminum plates ill make a template for and cut accordingly. first time i'll be doing this so we'll see how it goes.

anyways, would anyone have a template i can work off of? i contacted funjimmy and unfortunately he does not.

i welded my brackets on.tossed the templates a while ago tomorrow i'll put some pics up for you as i dont have any now.used some steel i got out of the scrap bin at work, skid plate off of a chevy lift kit.pretty heavy stuff just the smallest amount of flex

please! post some pics.. any more ideas would help. i started drawing some things out on cardboard to get a rough idea of what i want, i think im gonna go with mounting it the tweakin, branden, funjimmy way and use those two engine mount thru bolt points

they are a wee bit permanent but im nopt going back to stock ever,i also dont fear the concours police coming to my house.welds are shite but i think they are going to work out for me,seat to peg distance is the same as my r6.here you go sir

Here is how I did mine on my 77 cb750f. I got my ideas from Tweakin also. They work perfect.

Yes, I can email you a copy of my template. You will then want to make it out of wood to make sure it is right for you. I used a piece of plywood that was the same thickness as the aluminum so I could mock it up. PM me your email address.

Here are a few pics. If you want the actual template I can email it so you will be able to print in actual size.
