79 CB750K, RCB clone-ish build

Re: 79 CB750K "Off Track"/ TANK PORN!

im gonna look like an asshole like always but hey, im used to it....

forget that damn dunstall tank, make a race replica out of this thing. have it repainted silver and blue, keep the stock seat and tail, gold USD forks, gold o ring chan with modern wheels and brakes and this thing would look gorgeous. you are trying to make this bike into something it should have never been just my $.02 take it with a grain of salt. ill post up a pic of a nice example as soon as i can find one.

whats wrong with that?? id rather have that any day over a cafe....itll probably be the next bike i buy

Re: 79 CB750K "Off Track"/ TANK PORN!

That bike you posted... The exhaust looks like a mortar tube

Spoked wheels rock, I hate new mags. Do you want to buy a gold chain for me? I was pricing them out for the past two days... forget it. I wouldn't mind a new front end, not this year.

Re: 79 CB750K "Off Track"/ TANK PORN!

im not a fan of that exhaust either but the rest of the bike is kick ass......all im saying is that dunstall tank has got to go, that stock one is plenty nice enough and the stock paint job is beautiful on these bikes. and if you cant afford a gold o ring chain then youre kinda in the wrong hobby.....its not exactly cheap to build a cafe.

Re: 79 CB750K "Off Track"/ TANK PORN!

sonofabitch.... and I thought bike building was all about making your own parts, doing your own work and riding.

Its OK if I go finance a wide glide then change the bars and pipes?

Personally I'm all about that old Superbike look along with the flat track stuff. I glance at cafes just because, but if I had anything like that CB (and I do in my Zephyr) I'd do the superbike look - screw the cafe thing in this case. Cafe was appropriate for those 70s bikes and ones that look like them, but not the ones like the F models from 79 on. Seems like a waste of a really good look. Now if it was a CB750/900 K or C... that's another story.

That picture is what those later CBs, GSs, and KZs were about, with the tail sections.

But hey, he can do whatever, it's his not mine.

get the dildo out of your ass......you arent gonna build a nice cafe for $400 is all im trying to say. im just trying to show you another style of bike which is the nicest style by far for the model you have and would more than likely be far more fun to ride especially with those superbike bars and USD front end.

simmah down nahh guy

I do have to agree with you on this one. The whole bling thing is out of control and wresting the fun from a lot of us. Cafe, brats, bobbers, street/trackers, and most of all streetfighters were started by guys on the cheap - most couldn't afford the latest and greatest or in some cases fix what they had back to new after a crash. Seems all the basic stuff turns into a "who's got the most money to put in it" contest. i do give credit to those who do a lot with a little, but that's not the whole thing.

Cycle World almost scratched the surface when they did a brief article on bikes for under a grand. But instead of taking the entries and picking the interseting stuff, they printed a bunch of little pictures with brief blurbs. Some of the stuff had potential for a good shoot like the American flyers. stuff. My brother had his CL77 based hard tail street/tracker pictured and could have made a good story on doing a cool bike for low dollars, but apparently that isn't part of the formula.

Not bad for less than a grand... wouldn't some people want to know how some of it was done...

Go for what you want, I just expressed my thoughts on the F models. It will be interesting to see whatever you do... even if it doesn't have a gold chain. you're in the right area, the "bling boys" need to go back to customs and choppers.

Ummm, what page did you start reading this at??

It is a 750k.

I thought that was an F tank there, wasn't it? I didn't start at the beginning. That F that was posted caught my eye... Then it was THE Guinness commercial that REALLY distracted me!

You are definintely going the right way. A K model would be great with the old clubman look. If someone wanted an F look they should start with an F. I think I'll go back to page 1!

My bad.

Re: 79 CB750K "Off Track"/ TANK PORN!

Sooooooo, its almost 5 pm right now and this is where I'm at:

The swing arm is on the way it should be, free movement with no play. I NEED a longer chain now. Nothing special, 530 @ about 6' long, pricing them out now. I didn't think this swing arm was "that" much longer. Whats wrong with the nickle plated ones on ebay? I don't particularly like the sprocket, I think I will just glass blast that and leave it silver. Whats the purpose of that black guard? Im thinking about just drilling the rivets out and removing it.

DSC03252.jpg

Front end almost all done. It will all be apart again to rebuild my forks when my dust seals come in (already have the fork seals). I may also drill some more holes in my rotor too. Likely two between each set of three.

Gold anyone?

DSC03254.jpg

If I don't like it I may paint them black or media blast them to bare alumninum. No, the bracket is not done yet, some of the paint is peeling, I need to sand it and try again.

Took a 20 min breather from the bike:

they JUST came out of the oven.

Re: 79 CB750K "Off Track"

The black ring is likely there to support a derailed chain to keep it from jamming up the rear wheel.

I don't know about the chains on ebay, but I'd go with a name brand if you plan on running it a bit hard. I just don't have much faith in generic chains. If it's Chinese, they aren't known for the best in metalurgy. One buddy told me not to get some stainless parts from there because the stainess alloys they use seem to rust - just found that out with the freebie knives we got with some pan set, one stainless knife is rusting. If they use that sort of technology with chain, the thing will wear like putty.

On the other hand if it's a DID, EK, RK, Regina, Tsubaki, or the like, go for it. If you want to save money don't go O-ring, just get the plated link standard chain. It may be less costly than a standard O-ring.

I like what you're doing, looks interesting. I did look back.

Re: 79 CB750K "Off Track"

Actually, anybody can make low quaility stainless - not just the Chinese. Some of the stainless parts that we make at work are magnetic and can rust. And we melt our own. Just depends on what a customer wants. Just some info

And B Rat, keep up the good work!

Re: 79 CB750K "Off Track"

Not quite stainless, but I've been told that when it comes to chrome and the like, China has some of the best product. For lack of human rights and environmental laws they can use some of the more nasty "higher quality" chemicals.

Just about got done my gold brake last night, then I found a piece I forgot in my "varsol tank" Will need to be sanded and painted before assembly. Then on to... Somewhere to my electrical? Maybe re rout/ mount some of that?

To do list:

rebuild forks (when parts come in)
mount rear shock (when parts come in)
remove covers and clean (when parts come in)
complete swing arm/ wheel assy with brake set up (when parts come in)
Order brake line
Order chain
fix starter
run electronics/ lights
gas tank
seat
strip/ clean/ touch up/ paint/ rebuild (very last)

Ok, still lots to do. Should last till end of winter (mid May)

Re: 79 CB750K "Off Track"

Got the caliper done.

High tank:

Low tank:

Someone tell me they see where I'm going here. I'm kind of liking the angle the tail is on and am even thinking about going without the bump. Opinions?

Now I'm thinking about a gold frame with that light blue for the tank and tail.
Where and how to relocate the electrical is kicking my ass. Looks like it wile be a pile of soldering ether way.

a close up of the brake:

Just to make myself wonder what the fuck I'm doing... a resto mod would look cool. As inspired by a 1100F form another site.

Re: 79 CB750K "Off Track"

Sooo, got my uber mini battery in today after work DAMN is it small! I could probably hide this in my head light if I tried hard enough. Not 100% sure where its going yet.

DSC03263.jpg

Next I made a little plate for my electronics to hide under my seat. I need to modify it a bit tomorrow to make it work properly.

DSC03262.jpg

Bought some floral foam from Wallmart, easy to cut but easy to crush. I need to buy some glue tomorrow and when it sets its the cheese grader then body filler, sand paper, turtle wax, fiberglass + resen, sand paper, filler, sand paper, filler, primer, sand paper, primer, sand paper paint etc...

Wish me luck.
