i traded a basket case vt500c to a cool guy that rebuilds vintage mopeds. he's had this bike since feb, and it looked like he had plenty of small cc projects. he wanted a real motorcycle. his father in law does some sort of old school stuff to bikes, so the vt really will work out for him, i think. i made sure he knew everything i knew about that mess of a bike before we took each other's projects.
so then i had this:

within the next day or two, it looked like this:

i went through it and gave it a good looking at. the battery is dead, but it can run fine without it. the tires are both dead. one of the exhaust pipes has a dent in it:

here is how it sits now:
C360_2012-09-30-22-54-36.jpg

i tried to adjust the way the bike sits to provide a semi accurate reprisentation of the stance once it is re-shoed

i havent bought anything for it yet. ratpunk has offered to give me some clubman bars, so hell yeah.
im looking around to see where i can get tires, the dent fixed in the pipe, and find out what else i need to do.
a little back story; in the past year there have been 2 other bike projects of mine that were both a bit too ambitious, so, i'm thinking of bringing it to patrick and the gang at motorcycles unlimited so that i dont screw it up again :p
i'm taking the tank to an eventual bare metal. there arent any dings that draw attention, so it might look good with just some clear on the metal.
i'll keep the side covers for now, but eventual plans are to run on a pod filter or velocity stack, and to get a much smaller battery, and have the triangular areas opened up.
i have already hacked up the seat. do i regret it? yeah, maybe a little. i found a guy on ebay that does custom brat seats for cheaper than most other places, but it's not so desperately cheap that it looks fishy. i might take it to an upholstery shop (ladies? know any good upholstery shops?)
but this thing right here sure looks damn classy.

DAMN CLASSY.

and what else... i dont know. i have the other tidbits from my last 2 flops. the acewell gauge, the led strip tail light, and the led bar ends.

i was telling myself that i would wait until i had something to post, but damnit... it's late, i'm bored, in the garage with my almost 2 year old, and she is not in any sleeping mood.

i didnt know how to mount the seat. i'm still leery about mounting a fiberglass seat. i dont know... whatever.

anyways, this damn thing went south. i had problems getting the electrical issues resolved. i didnt know what i was doing. totally in the dark. i needed a complete exhaust made... all sorts of stuff, and i was already 2 grand in.

the end.

i put the dirt tank back on, chopped the tail, added an old bicycle seat and lost a lot of fans that had been following the build. i really hated what i had done. i didnt know what i was doing and should have never started the thing, or at least sold it before i chopped it up. it was really cool looking as a cafe racer. it had an sv650 shock and linkage. the thing was marvelous. i just wish it ran.

Cool, man. I have a 185 I am working on too. Good to see someone else get one of these 'ol piles working.

Im happy to report that it seems to run fine. i was a little surprised to kick it so easily when i first got it.

Omg. a dude on another forum just offered me a parts bike. I should be picking it up tomorrow. i think my local forum guys want me to have a rideable bike almost as bad as i want it

Dropped off the wheels at the friend's shop that has the parts bike. i passed on it. he wants a bit more than im willing to part with, but hey, finally getting tires!

i thought i had posted that i have some clubmans and grips on the way, thanks ratpunk.
i'm usually posting from my phone. dotheton doesnt like my phone so much. i cant get full size pictures, and it sometimes shuts down on me.

anyways, next week should see some big changes! :)

I did a lot of cleaning parts today.
let me stop and say that i am having trouble typing.clearly. i had a good deal of mossisipi mud black and tan. that stiff is very good.
Ummm. so i.talked.to.the.wife about.getting.that.cool.leather cafe seat and.shes unusually.all.for.it.
its mine on.the 15th.
waiting.on tires spark plugs and.handlebars still.
going.to.pull.out.the dented exhaust tomorrow
paimted the gas tank.dark green. i have plans.for.naming.the.bik. im usually against.that. but i like this.time.
one more swig.of.miss mud and im.out.for.the night. good.night.guys!

Ive been to two shops today, trying to get my pipe fixed. Neither shop could help and said this pipe is just fucked. anyone know other pipes that would work, or know anyone with a cm 200 or 185 that they are parting out?

i havent updated in a while. lots of life and death happening. my grandma died a few days ago. i got back from her funeral a little before midnight. i dont feel like sleeping quite yet.

ratpunk, the grips and bars arrived and look great on the bike. the big ole gauges dont though, so i'm working on wiring up my nice little digital acewell gauge, and man i hate wiring. for real. anyone who has seen my wiring work would tell you i'm the type of guy that would fuck up a wet dream...
and they might be right.
i need to make a lower mount for the acewell somehow.
i have relocated the key to the frame just ahead of the tank. looks great. i'm going to have to secure it a little better, but it's in there pretty good right now.
my tires are on the wheels. with the stuff in my life thats been happening, i just havent had any time or whatever to go get the wheels. not that important, considering other stuff.
all the gas i burned in my durango today sure did take a lot of money. blah. i might have to wait until next weekend to pick up the wheels.

once wheels are on, i'm taking this thing for a damn drive. i've had it 2 months and never ridden it, even though it runs.

i still have a dented ass exhaust, too. so, just... dammit.
least i got clubman bars and tires (soon)

Feel you on the life and deathly toothy people over the course of my build. Hope you're doing right.

a few little updates...
i have better secured the ignition switch on the right side of the front of the frame, just ahead of the tank. this looks pretty damn good.

i made a little bracket to bridge the 2 original gauge mounts on the top triple. this is now holding my spiffy digital acewell pod.

the tank and panels were painted green, but its kinda shitty looking. im wanting to get a more british racing green. so like... duh... i need to get some brg.

i put the dented up pipe back on. i'll spring for a custom exhaust from this local shop that does these things well, when i have the money.

Its been a while since i had a running bike. i put some of the jalopy back together and it started on the first kick.

shopping list of cheap shit for once i get the wheels back on.
Led resistors for the turn sigs
fork ears for the headlight
acewell cb digital speedometer cablep
Generic cafe whatever taillight

expensive shit list is short
register the poop and get the seat ive been eyeballing

Bit by bit by bit my bike shapes up slowly. i have vowed to take no pics until i get the wheels back on, but i feel.like breaking that vow.
I put the bar end turn signals on and ive got a small air filter on, duct taped onto the rubber intake boot, lol.
ill be getting another filter the right size. its tempting to get a new carb with a cone filter since its only $30 on ebay.
as always, with any update, a lack of funds mandates a trickle of updates.

what the heck, here's some pics

the paint didnt turn out as dark as i thought it would be, but whatever. i'll throw some BRG colored paint on it, after sanding it some more.
i really like how the bike feels. i wish it was a more powerful bike, like a 350 or 400, but i will be happy to ride anything again.

also, this is my 3rd project bike this year. the other 2 were flops. huge flops. this one was intended to be just 'throw some new tires and a lower bar on it and ride', but its a definite project now. im going to get rid of the bulk of shit in the triangle area and maybe it will look good enough that i can ride with no side panels.
that will really look good with the seat im getting.

oh, and i forgot to get a better pic of it, but the key ignition is on the right side, in front of the tank. it looks great in person.

once i get the wheels back on i'll take some good daytime pics with some detail shots.

im really enjoying this project.

i finally got the wheels back last weekend, and put them on the same night. last night i was able to get some time with making it run.
this was the result

wow that's a high idle speed.
i think it's the cables, being super long. the throttle cable has about a half foot extra length since i removed the mini apes.
tonight i got off work and went straight to it. i moved the throttle cable to a less restrictive spot and fired it up. the result was better.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5UZs50sXUE&feature=plcp
tomorrow i should get some time in the morning- yay no work- and will almost def ride it up and down the street a few times.

I took it out for a short spin around the neighborhood. Maybe about a mile and a half. I found out i am too tall for clubman bars on this little bike. i cant turn well because the bars hit my knees.
oh well. it was really good getting.to.ride. its been about a year and half.
