Picking up my 83 Heritage XS 650 on Wednesday. Got some plans for her but want to get it reliably running first and foremost. PO says it runs good for the most part and he's replaced a lot of the electrics but the carbs need tuned and floats need adjusted.
Also looking for someone that can do a bit of cutting and welding for me. I'm in a studio apartment off Halsted and Wellington and have no space or skills needed to tackle the frame.
Looking fwd to meeting up with some of you in the future and seeing some of these rides in he flesh.
Awesome and thanks. I'll probably be hitting you guys up.
I've got some plans for this bike that I'm probably in over my head but would like to see it through.
I've got relatives in South Elgin.
Right now I'm car less (I own a car but it's down in Champaign on my parent's farm). No need to pay for parking and all that other crap when I can use the CTA to get to work everyday.
Wednesday I'm renting out a UHaul van to throw the bike in when I pick it up. I'd ride it back, but not knowing how it's gonna truly run I don't wanna take the chance clear from Rockford.
My plans for the build are in that thread above. It would be so much easier having someone close by or in a general vicinity of Chicago be able to do the welding for me.
Also the personal owner thinks the vaccuum on the petcock is failing and seal is leaking which is flooding the carbs. Eventually I'd like to get away w/ running battery-less.
Once I get the bike and figure out what all I'll need to make it running reliably and get it licensed I'll hit you and your shop up w/ what I want done to the frame and hopefully you can get me a quote on pricing . Thanks.
i am sure one of the guys from 1/2 fast chicago could help you out, they are a great group, i ride with them whenever i can... contact Proteal on here (Joe) he can prob set u up with a memeber that welds
Hey folks, new to the forum by way of user name but have been lurking for a bit since I picked up a 77 GS550 for $400 about a month ago. Just another Chicago dude living in Ukranian Village looking to get this clunker running, and perhaps, perhaps, give the bike a decent appearance!
Hey guys! Catbird here, from a little farm village out the ass-end of nowhere called Big Rock, closer to Aurora than Chicago.
Right now my daily driver is a crusty old 1965 Pontiac Tempest Custom. I don't take "Custom" lightly, and when I saw the badge attached to the trunk lid and the dash, I knew I had my work cut-out for me.
My project for the time being, however, is a 1976 Yamaha DT250 that was had in excellent shape for $300, simple matter of bad ignition. THe classic "It only runs going downhill". Just finished fixing up the brakes and seat, needs steering bushings and some more wiring work to get the lights all working before I get into the sport tuning.
No photos at the moment of that tank, I'm trying to decide whether to bother making a project bike out of it, or if I want to stick to it just long enough to find a four-stroke bike.
When I got it 8 years ago, I didn't think much of it because... Shit, I was 14. XD
Here, I was thinking this thing was a dorky little toy with puppy-like disproportion. Now I've got people left and right singing praises for it...
It's very encouraging and I'mma finish cleaning it up here real nice.
Getting it registered today and as soon as that happens, calling the insurance company to get 'er on the policy the moment that's done. Or rather, since I work all weekend, my father's helping out with the insurance.
At some point in the future I'm going to try to find a compatible street-bike fork set that weighs a little less and has a wheel with a disc brake to make this gal really ideal for street use.
