aluminum cafe racer seat pan build

Today at work i started my seat pan for a 1980 Gs1000GL. It is made of .080 aluminum. Brought it home to make sure it fits properly. It was snug as a bug. Tomorrow I can weld it together and start with body work. I just need to figure out the best way to attach it to the frame. Any suggestions? Thanks

Nifty work, people would pay more attention if you posted the pic properly. How long did that take you?

Thanks prosimex, I have 2 to 3 hours into it so far and about the same into planning. I am fortunate enough to work with a small comany that has all the tools to make this job easier and that allows me to work on my own projects.

Next up is the sanding, some more bondo, and some more sanding, so forth and so on.

Wait...... BONDO? PAINT? you made it out of Aluminum for christs sakes, just polish it! Amazing the thoughts that get into peoples heads these days..

Ahh no.. polish it. I was hoping it would look like the tail piece on this cb750

New plan, polished aluminum does look badass and im sold. Gonna remove bondo today and do a better job welding to finish it off and start sanding her down.

Well here it is. I used the flap disk to remove bondo. Then sanded it down with 80 grit, then 180 grit, and then 400 grit. After I make the plates for the seat padding I will finish it off with 1000 grit and then the polishing compound. I think i will use mothers billet polishing compound.

Sanded it with 1000 grit and then 1500 grit. Its now ready to be polished. Does anyone know where a guy can get a thick piece of vintage/aged brown leather?

dude that looks sweet!....Check out yard sales and flea markets for old leather jackets right day right time you might score a freebie

Try a thrift store...I've found some pretty good stuff at the ones around me. Seat looks great, glad you decided to polish it. Looks bad ass.

Yes there you go. What made you change your mind?

And it looks really damn good. All those welds smoothed out very nicely.

you might want to add some reinforcement behind the spot where you joined the rounded back part to the bent seat area, that spot experiences a lot of vibration and a crack will start to form there if it's not a little beefed up
