bRatty standard CL project

picked up a 68 CL350, going to be doing things to it over the course of the next few weeks, im probably going to leave it patina'd and get everything mechanical in order, do something with the paint, maybe clean up some of the metal, id really like to do a brushed aluminum/stainless finish for most of the metal bits.
since i got it a week ago its had the wiring cleaned up, new kenda 761 dual sport tires, some new rubber bits, plugs, caps, fluids, valves checked, ect. and i have about $300 worth of stuff that should be arriving from DCC on monday, new cables all around, new "silencers" ect.

the bike itself runs great, seems to of been well taken care of engine wise, new chain sprockets, points condenser, seals ect, and im supposedly now the 3rd owner, the original was a local cop that rode it since he bought it new until he passed away. some ding dong kind of ruined the tank by filling in the badge indents with plaster(man those 60s badges were rad) then matte blacking over it, the side panels also got spray bombed black, then to add insult to injury ditched the awesome CL pipes and replaced them poorly with CB headers and cheesy martini shaker pipes, which are loud and fun but are total garbage, new reverse mega phones are on the way. id like to find some decent CL pipes eventually and replace them.

the plan for the bike is to keep it kind of ratty, almost bratty, and standard, kind of old dual sporty i guess while being a total hooligan ride. i was going to change the bars and the seat to super moto bars and a brat flat seat but the more i ride with the stock bars the more i dig them, and the OG seat has its charms, granted it was a replacement and im figuring off a CB as its about 1.5-2in short of meeting up with the tank.

id like to track down a cool stainless(or fab) front and rear fender and shorten them up a little, change out the tail light with an aluminum lucas style unit, maybe shit can the handle bar switch units and just run bare perches and dog leg style levers and put in hidden light switches, my main inspiration is a cool bonneville someone did up, pic will be included. ill post up pics as it changes in the future.

Man! that thing is clean! I would love to get my hands on that thing. I look forwards to how you get on with it.

thanks ya'll, the paint looks nicer in the pics. the tank looks like it was brush painted or something, i may get it stripped and see how bad the filler is to get off to run OG badges, or just fill and smooth everything over and do a proper paint job, something gas resistant, either do it again in matte black, or something cool like gold/silver metal flake, also tinkering around with matte black with old bmw style bursts on the side in a glitter. the plan is to smooth the side panels and re-do them in black either semi gloss or matte. light polishing on the bare metal bits, and im deciding which suspension to order up for it. i cant wait to toss the cables that are on there, theyre the originals and totally crusty. ive been buzzing around on it daily and its been reliable so far.

another kind of inspiration for the build.

im thinking about changing the bars, looking for something without much pullback, less than 4in, maybe 2in tall, i wish i could find something in stainless or raw. any good links?

Got in the first order from DCC, reverse megaphone shorty mufflers, new clutch and brake cable, dog leg clutch lever and some small stuff, did all that during lunch at the shop, an of course picked up a nail on the ride in this morning in the new tires. Ended up placing another order this afternoon with DC, black exhaust wrap(the headers on this bike are hideous, dented and scraped, new throttle cable, crush gaskets for the pipes and some black supermoto bars, which I plan on stripping and clear coating for a bare look.

I'll throw some pics up tommorow, nothing too exciting , just things that make it ride better and more reliably. Next move is pulling the gauges off, ordering the brushed aluminum Lucas style tail light, cutting the rear fender back, and figuring out a different switch situation, I'd like to go more bare bones with just lever perches up top and a simple throttle assembly. Most of that will happen when I get the new bars on.

Still working out with my buddy a good time to do up the tank and side covers, I'll probably leave the fork ears and headlight black, just done up nicer. Still undecided on color or lack of.

got in another DCC package, header wrap, supermoto bars, and more cables. stayed late at work and did it up last nite, and took a couple horrible phone pics.

so far ive just gone through and replaced wear items, new cables all around, tires, fluids all over tires ect.

ended up running the wiring through the new bars, having to machine out a few small holes to run it, it really wasnt bad at all, and looks 10x cleaner than running it outside the bars, that and with the stock switches you have to anyway. also took off the tach and speedo, which looks good, im not worried about speeding on this bike. wrapping the headers wasnt bad, did it dry and as tight as i could get it, it was smoking like hell on the ride home, patched up some bodgy wiring as my solenoid wasnt working quite right for the past couple of days.

also, had a dude come into my shop randomly looking to unload some parts he wasnt using on his 360 hes building. he has a set of Mikuni VM32s, a gold sparkle tank, another CL tank he did knee indents on and some other misc. i think im going to pick up the VM32s, i was worried they would be too big but word on the street is a lot of local guys with 350s are running them and theyre working great, and the price he wants is great. im also curious about the gold sparkle tank, he bought it as it was marked for a 360 but go it and its a for a 350. guy is a member here i guess too.

ill post more shitty pics of my shitty bike later.

what tank is on this?

I like your inspiration bikes. Good luck with the build.

i want to say its a sportster tank, ill try to find more pics of that bike, i follow the shop on tumblr. they do some cool stuff. it looks a little goofy, but rad goofy.

long time with no updates, new additions are all the cables replaced, replaced the stock blown out rear suspension with not so great DCC/Ebay shocks, have progressives on order. cut down the rear fender a little, installed a Lucas style LED tail light, and mainly just little things you cant see but make it a better rider, been riding it daily. also have some new gaskets for the LH side on the way as the stator and LH case covers seep a little and mussy up the wrap and smoke a little. anyone got a good idea of how to get rubber off my pipes? got some on the LH silencer from using the side stand after riding. also in the works is a different tank, have one of the later CL tanks being painted by a friend right now. ill post up when its done. still needs the latch, got a cap though.

Not bad. My 63 250 was/is in a lot worse shape. And had aftermarket CB72 header pipes like yours, but with 12" Rocky/Nempco glasspacks from the late 60s or early 70s... in a lot rougher shape than your headers.

Shave the fork reflectors. I lucked out, my bike came with smooth headlight stanchions (but a CA/CB headlight with big oval speedometer built in, I'd rather run a plain one).

My tank also had the badge indents covered with body filler, wire wheel in a drill motor and about 10 minutes per side to clean them out. Re-pop badges run about $40 a set for mine, but I'm going to cheap out and order a couple plain Harley points covers and have them custom engraved.

Solid start so far. Make it reliable, then make it pretty (unlike mine, I'm doing all the cosmetics, cables, suspension and such before I rebuild the engine that crapped out with less than 20 hours on the last rebuild- in the late 70s. And having a factory Honda race mechanic do the engine.).

Agreed, honestly I prefer a well loved ratty bike over something fancy, I live in a city with year round riding so bikes can get beat up, the plan with the other tank is bare (waxed or cleared) metal with a slight patina and black down the top, the headlight bucket in luckily metal and may get the same treatment. I like a bike that gets ridden with character to prove it. Mechanically sound of course.

After I pick up a new guitar amp the next plan is to get some progressives on the back (shocks that are on there are new but might as well be a hardtail) and replacing the emgo pipes with those rad DCC stainless ones or see if a local fab shop can do a 2-1 scrambler style high pipe for me.
