BSA 650 Lightning

Another idea, Revis. Some guys buy a computer for a bicycle (around $20) and set it up for the front wheel of their moto for speedo.

Post some pics of that baby!!

That is a funny story. Every time I jump on a modern bike it hardly ever fails. I go to hit the brake and end up downshifting. It's a challenge to go from english to others and back.

I'm not sure that Norton Smiths would read accurate on a BSA. Here's link to a reference guide to what model smiths were used on different years and makes of brit bikes. On the right is the menu for the bike make. http://www.raskcycle.com/techtip/p24.html

Here's a source for Smiths copies. Almost to the bottom of the page (#81-5102 and 03). $128 for the set.

Hope that's useful info.

Thats extremely useful. I don't exactly mind the copies, but it would be nice to have this bike with the original type parts. But I talked to my dad and he never ran gauges. But he hasn't been pulled over 12 times holding 3 speeding tickets, 2 seatbelt violations, and 1 wreckless driving (Wheelie on the cb360 :D)

So no matter what I throw on there I'd like to know how fast I'm going when I see a cop :p.
But thats alot better priced than the smiths. And I like your idea for the bicycle speedo.

Cool bike. I am not a fan of the extended forks, but you have a lot of good raw material to work with there.

The second bike sounds like a Norton P11, which is a rare beast. I would try to not cannibalize that if you can help it.

Oh, I'm not going to cannibalize anything. Everything is staying how it was when I got it from my dad. I will not grind on any british bike. However if I'm going to make a bobber I got 2 360's to play with. Other than that, both my nortons are remaining the same. As it sits, my brother now has the triumph tr6, and my sister is supposed to have the 850 commando. He gave me everything else. The commando is finished, but she has no interest in riding it so it's just sitting for now. And the p11 is just hanging out in my garage with no wheels on it. That will be my next. But don't worry. British bikes are a value to me and I know they shouldn't be straight chopped apart.

hey Revis, on your speedo/tech situation- no, jap stuff won't work as replacment type stuff. Way diffrent. Hell, theres alot of diffrences even in original Smiths and Veglea. ratios and what not. ( Then you have the chronometric stuff, shish!) but the bicycle speedo is a good trick. I have one on my Triton. Works great, has speed, average speed, trip, max speed. You do HAVE TO use the cheaper wired units. The wireless ones will not work, too much electrical shit going on. And on the tach, just buy a small electronic tach from AdvanceZoneBoys( SunPro, or whatever is the smallest)

On the P-11 and Commando and whatever else, CHOP THAT SHIT!!!!. Who cares about another resto, let the old farts do that and argue about correctness of bolts and colors. Google Commando or Bonnivlle, millions of em'. Do we need another? Why not build something cool instead. Besides it cost a fuckin fortune to restore a P11/G15 and they don't fetch that much. No Revrence, Nothing is sacred!

The ranger already is basically halfway there to being a cafe, It's got the dragbars, haven't seen the seat yet but it's here somewhere. Thats for after the bsa though.

Update, Painting the frame. Couldn't find a pair of perfect covers without gigantic gouges in them or a crack, but I found two that I repaired the cracks, wlded, grinded, bondo'd and painted.

Ahh the memories.. love it! That winged BSA logo has always been my favorite, even have owned a BSA 12g over & under shotty that matched my Thunderbolt back in the day.
Now if I remember right the primary sides oil level was checked by removing one of those side cover bolts around the outside and filling till it ran out the hole... was marked red from the factory.

Alright, I used Dupli-color Primer sealer, then dupli-color gloss black acrylic enamel, then duplicolor acrylic enamel clear coat.
Doesn't look perfect but good enough. I'm not a good painter so I don't know what's best. I use epoxy enamel alot for things but not for this.

Any recommendations on the best paint for my tank? I want it to be very very nice. Just redoing the black, not the chrome.

I also wanted to know if anybody could hook me up with the chrome trim that goes across the middle of the tank. My budget isn't getting any bigger so if you got any old but still good trim. PM me.

I wasn't saying to do a concourse resto on the Norton, I was just saying don't use it as a parts bike. Get that thing back on the road. My Triumph is miles away from stock (or finished..lol), but it will be the way that I like it.

Good progress on the Beezer.

Yeah, I'm not very experienced in bobbing things out yet. But before I go grinding on any of the british bikes I'd like a little more practice with other things. So they aren't going to be very far off of what my dad ran. But maybe one day I'll have the courage to take an air grinder to the rear of the frame. But I am at least making progress. I am however getting a little sidetracked. My friend and me are now working on making a lawn mower low rider that will do 50mph.

I know you are on a budget, but here are some links. If you want it to look original and last forever, I would hire it done by one of these places. If you have some experience with painting, it can never hurt to try it yourself. You can always sand it down and do it over. One thing about yours that is to your advantage is there are no stripes.

Yeah I am on a small budget, I was asking along the lines of, what is the best paint to use. I just need the absolute best bang for the buck, and where I can get it. Because I can stand in the paint isle looking like an idiot for almost 2 hours. The epoxy paint is nice but I want it to be the best out of a can. I just need someone to spell it out for me of steps, brands, and types. I'm not experienced in painting so all I know is sand, prime, color, clear.
Hit me with the best setup:
Preparation: what sandpaper to use,
Priming: What type of primer, what brand
Painting: how many coats, what brand
ClearCoat: how many coats, what brand

I need a painting shit for idiots guide basically.

Alright, moving a little slower because I had a roto tiller and a lawn mower thrown on my driveway for repairs. So I decided to order what I need just to at least feel like I'm waiting on something while I'm doing nothing :p.
Got the clubmans in, although I would have liked some Z bars, couldn't find any 7/8's cheap on ebay. Got the clubmans for around $30.
I bought a gasket kit from ebay. Come to my surprise they just decided to shove them in, throw them in an envelope and disregard the fact that they may bend and break if creased. Hoping they will send me replacements.

Alright, after doing the 12 hour bobber project, 360 boredom. I found the inspiration and the eye. So I'd like to try modifications to my frame. Because after seeing what you can make with small changes really makes me want to experiment with the look of this bike.
I'm really wanting to see what this bike would look like Raked out.
I really would like to think up a color scheme. I'm really into a Blacked out look, with maybe some gray.
I am not making a perfect bike, but I want to make something special.
I haven't had much british inspiration though. Or any inspiration for that matter.
I want to take separate pictures of the frame and play with photoshop and see if I can find something likable. Maybe I'll throw some up here soon. GIve me some inspiration.
