Cafe racers at the "Ace" and thoughts on hipsters

NY Dolls were a glam band. Long hair, make up, women's clothes, on the coattails of Bowie, T Rex, etc., but sure, more rockin'. Don't get me wrong, I love 'em.

Yes and no. They looked glitter but played a dirty gritty sound.

OK we're talking first. NY Dolls were a bridge. They were a huge influence on the Ramones. No Dolls, no Raw Power, no Ramones. Here's the problem. As much as everyone claims the Ramones were a huge influence there are really no other bands who aped their sound. Johnny claimed his guitar sound was the Ramones but without the "British" pop vocals of Joey they would be just another band. It was the blend of styles that made the Ramones great. The short songs and subject matter added to the image. If you define what punk is by the Ramones then you have a genre of only 1 band. If you expand the definition of punk to music that was different from mainstream pop and rock, then you can include the Dolls, the Stooges, Modern Lovers, and the first real punk album: The Dictators Go Girl Crazy!

It came out a year before Ramones, was different from mainstream rock, was influenced by the pop songs of the 1960s and the Ramones wouldn't even mention them in interviews for fear that their image as the original punk band would be called into question. Here is the challenge: If Go Girl Crazy! is not punk, then what is it?

I listen primarily to, and compose, drum & bass and jungle. Does this mean I can't has café?

Or am I still cool, since by necessity rather than hipster aesthetic, the majority of my collection is on vinyl and acetate dubplate? :D
