CB100 - My first build. - Finally Finished!

Hi Everybody! Newb here, starting my first cafe project. Most of this first post is copied form the member introduction section but I wanted to move it here so I can give updates on the ongoing project.

So here she is. Just a little '72 CB100. Already had the clubman handlebars, wasn't running and has a pretty shoddy repair of a gaping hole in the muffler. Beautiful, isn't she?

So I cleaned the carb and replaced the jets and she fired right up. A little Seafoam and she's ticking like a clock.

Now that I knew she was a runner, I decided to start breaking her down. I got this far last night.

I'm going to continue right down to the frame, taking pictures, labeling wires and boxing up parts and hardware so I don't lose anything.
Future plans are to strip and repaint the frame, clean and polish the engine, cut down the fenders, new grips/mirrors, paint tank/fenders, hide the electrical, and make my own cafe seat.

So thanks again for all the inspiration and helpful tips on this site. It's awesome.

Re: CB100 - My first build.

So I've taken her all the way down to the frame. This past weekend I took her over to my brother-in-law's shop for some detabbing. We also welded in some cross bars that I hope to use to mount the seat. I still have to make the seat to know for sure, but so far it's looking pretty good.

My next steps are to get eh wheels coated so I can get my new tires on. Then I'll mock up a rolling chassis so I can start molding a seat.

Re: CB100 - My first build.

Are you planning on repainting? I love the patina on the tank and side covers. My CB100 was the first bike I completely tore apart and rebuilt. Great to learn on and not a whole lot of parts to lose. Good luck, if you run into any questions i'll try to help out where I can.

Thanks! I'll probably be taking you up on that. I am planning on fixing the dents and painting the tank. I'll also be chopping the front fender and painting that. The side covers will be removed as I'm going to a conical air cleaner and losing the battery altogether. I'll also be removing the rear fender and building a custom cafe seat. That should be a real adventure! I'm also planning on powder coating the frame, wheels and front/back brake hubs.

Re: CB100 - My first build.

All sounds like a good plan, though I will cry a little when you paint that tank

I did alot of the same things that you are planning. You might want to give a read through my old build thread and help get you on the right track.

Re: CB100 - My first build.

I think going battery-less involves using an SL or XL 125 stator? Not sure you'd be able to go 12v AND battery-less, I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Not necessarily, from what I understand. It already ran fine with a stone dead battery and I'm not going to 12v, I'm staying with 6v. (Already have new 6v brake light and turn signals staked out). I will be ordering a capacitor from Oregon Motorcycles so the lights won't flicker at low RPMs.

Re: CB100 - My first build.

Very interesting. I was under the impression that the CB100's needed a battery.

CB100 - My first build.

Tony from Oregon Motorcycles confirmed that his capacitor would work just fine. They're out right now but will have some in a couple of weeks. I've seen posts around the webs from several people having success with them. So I figured I'd give it a try. :)

Stay tuned for the results!

First try at a seat mold today. Wish me luck!

CB100 - My first build.

So it went pretty well and I'm really happy with the results. Not bad for a first try, right?

CB100 - My first build.

Thanks! You're right about the colors matching. That actually convinced me to try to keep the original color scheme.

Re: CB100 - My first build.

The OEM front fender is so cool, a pure classic The Hondas of that era had it right.
Cheers, 50gary

Just finished the first rough sanding on the seat. I hate fiberglass. That is all.

Re: CB100 - My first build.

I stripped the tank today. It turned out pretty well. Now I have to get to pulling the dents. Not sure how that's going to go. Only one way to find out though! :p

I have just about all the parts I need to start putting her back together. Just need to get some stuff back from powder coating on Friday. I also need to do some additional fiberglass repairs on the seat. Starting to come together though.
